On paper, college football’s Week 5 looks to be an improvement over Week 4. That’s especially great because Week 4 turned out to be a big bowl of jelly beans, not that readers of The Watch Grid were surprised, because this household expects every weekend of CFB to be wonderful. Below, The Watch Grid sorts your FBS weekend based on which games appear likeliest to deliver maximum watchability. Remember watchability does not refer to how good your team is, because — to be quite frank — I think your team is too good to be contained by any grid anyway.

Clemson senior quarterback Kelly Bryant says he is transferring from the school, just days after coach Dabo Swinney announced that freshman Trevor Lawrence would be the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against Syracuse. Bryant started the first four games of the season, but his fate was sealed when Lawrence threw four touchdowns Saturday a win against Georgia Tech. He did not practice the last two days after Lawrence was giving the starting nod.

"...as has been the theme throughout much of the first three weeks of the NFL season, roughing the passer penalties were a significant storyline from Monday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bucs, Steelers set new mark for roughing penalties Officials called four roughing penalties during Pittsburgh’s 30-27 win on Monday, which is tied for most in the league in one game since 2001, according to ESPN. While a couple of them were fairly clear violations of contact with the quarterback’s head, others appeared to fall into the vague new definition of the foul that penalizes defenders...

One season after The Year of The Quarterback in college football, the 2018 season began with a muddled quarterback class. There were solid players like Missouri’s Drew Lock, West Virginia’s Will Grier, North Carolina State’s Ryan Finley, Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham and Oregon’s Justin Herbert. But no superstars that threatened a class that saw five first-round picks in the 2018 NFL draft. One-third of the way through this college football season, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the country’s best two quarterbacks may be two first-year starters. Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins have beelined to the top of the...

After Thursday's 21–17 win over the Jets, Browns head coach Hue Jackson said he has to wait to "watch the tape" before deciding between Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield on who will be the Week 4 starting quarterback. Rookie quarterback and No. 1 pick Mayfield came in before the first half ended when quarterback Taylor went out with a concussion. He led the Browns back from a 14–0 defecit for the victory.

Rookie Baker Mayfield entered for his NFL regular-season debut late in the second quarter and brought the Browns back from a 14-0 deficit to prevail 21-17, snapping a 19-game winless streak dating back to Dec. 24, 2016 -- a span of 635 days...

Every weekend of college football is a good weekend. We say that all the time. And Week 4 could really put that to the test! There’s only one game between ranked teams who have actual chances of beating each other, we’re not exactly overflowing with rivalry, and But! Tune in. I count five pretty significant games, a decent number, and conference games are well underway, meaning all surprises matter doubly. And whatever, we don’t watch this sport to see important things take place. We watch to see hilarious punt returns.

Le’Veon Bell is making the most of his extended summer vacation. As the Steelers sit tied with the Browns in the basement of the AFC North at 0-1-1 and drama escalates around Antonio Brown, the star running back has retreated to Miami, where he was seen relaxing on a yacht and jet-skiing.

FULL TITLE: NFL’s Nightmare Becomes Reality As ‘Monday Night Football’ Posts Worst Week 2 Ratings EVER Recorded The NFL is not going to fold. They are way too big to be derailed by a controversy like this but there’s no doubt they have lost fans which means they have lost money that they didn’t need to lose. From Breitbart: The ratings for Week Two’s Monday Night Football game between the Chicago Bears and the Seattle Seahawks, crashed to the lowest numbers ever recorded for a Week Two Monday night game. That’s bad no matter how you slice it.

The NFL season has gotten off to a rough start in primetime, with Thursday Night Football ratings the latest to drop. The Week 2 Ravens-Bengals Thursday Night Football game had a 4.2 rating and 7.02 million viewers on NFL Network, down 14% in ratings and 13% in viewership from last year (Texans-Bengals: 4.9, 8.08M). Compared to NFL Network’s first exclusive game in 2016, Dolphins-Bengals in Week 4, ratings fell 13% (from 4.8) and viewership 11% (from 7.90M). Not including over-the-air simulcasts, the Bengals’ win was NFL Network’s least-watched season opener since 2014 — when the network did not make its...

In an 11-season stretch between national championships in 2002 and 2014, many of the Big Ten’s marquee programs found themselves wading through varying messes. Michigan couldn’t find the right coach after Lloyd Carr retired, Penn State’s program dealt with the Jerry Sandusky scandal and Ohio State navigated the ugly end of the Jim Tressel era. Everything changed for the Big Ten’s national perception in 2014. Ohio State stunned Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in the semifinals in the first season of the College Football Playoff. Urban Meyer led the Buckeyes to that first CFP title, and Ohio State reset the...

Carolina Panthers owner and hedge fund mogul David Tepper has slammed President Trump regarding his national anthem protests stance. Speaking to CNBC, Tepper – who bought the Panthers for $2.2 billion in May – said the attacks on players who protest during the national anthem is “the biggest pile of bull-dinky ever.” Although Tepper didn’t specifically name President Trump, it was clear whom he was talking about, referring to “Howdy-Doody” and “the red-headed guy in DC” during the interview.

Week 3’s gonna be a strange one in college football. America’s only truly national regular season has no way of avoiding disastrous weather — we simply have teams everywhere. For the third September in a row, the schedule is altered because of weather. College football games are the least of our worries, but seeing as this is a weekly college football schedule post, it’s a thing to make note of. If you’re anywhere near the storm’s potential path (I kind of am myself), please be safe.

President Donald Trump has made his name from sales of everything from suits to steak, but this is his first time selling sneakers — even though that probably wasn’t his intention. Nike sales jumped by 31 percent after debuting quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick as a new company spokesman — and market observers say the president’s public displays of anger may have backfired by drawing more attention to Nike. “Controversial endorsements tend to generate a lot of hype,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for retail at The NPD Group, a market research firm. “These kinds of statements and brand partnerships make...

A couple of years ago, QB Colin Kaepernick got benched because he couldn't play anymore. As I recall, he was regularly passing the ball to the other team in what we call "interceptions." Colin got benched and turned into a political philosopher. He could have worked on his deteriorating skills and tried to get his old job back. Not Colin. He found his "inner Che," and we know the rest of the story. The NFL is now all about Colin, and the fans are not tuning in. Now Nike is referring to his act as some kind of "sacrifice." Sorry,...

Week one of the regular NFL season kicked off this weekend with a wimper - the ratings were at a 10-year low. ... Americans are fed up with athletes kneeling during the National Anthem and it showed - plenty of empty seats plagued stadiums on Sunday. [Snip] On Sunday, Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson kicked off their first game one of the NFL season by taking a knee during the National Anthem and Colin Kaepernick celebrated. The constant protests on the field are destroying the NFL. The President slammed the NFL on Sunday for their abysmal...
