A farmer in northern B.C. who caught a lynx in his chicken coop on Sunday didn't react the way one might expect. He didn't grab a gun or yell at the wild animal. Instead, Chris Paulson grabbed the lynx by the scruff of its neck, lifted it off the ground and scooped it from the coop. Then he gave it a gentle scolding. "He just looked ... a bit like [a kid] with its hand in the chocolate chip bag," Paulson told CBC News from his home near Decker Lake, west of Prince George.

Lynx named Linda was born in the Leningrad Zoo in June 2007 and soon people brought a cat neighbor into its enclosure. Linda and Dusya have been together for twelve years, they live in peace, harmony and friendship. They were of almost the same size when they met, their interest for each other was obvious. They were left to play together under surveillance of zoo employees, then alone. They never tried to aggressively attack each other. The purpose of the experiment was to show zoo visitors the difference in behavior of a lynx and a domestic cat.But Linda and Dusya both behave...

The space tourism firm XCOR Aerospace Inc. announced plans in 2008 to launch its private two-seat Lynx space plane. Lynx was expected to fly paying space tourists to an altitude of about 38 miles above Earth, where passengers would experience 90 seconds of weightlessness. The company first estimated flight tests would begin in 2010, with private flights to follow soon after. Many space tourists bought into XCOR's Lynx model for the chance to briefly experience weightlessness at the edge of space. Having paid XCOR $100,000 for a ticket, customer Nael Hamameh thought his flight would come as early as 2011,...

The Newtons have received thousands of emails and Facebook messages about the lynx, Cathy said. Responding to demand, they started selling calendars, posters, magnets and Christmas ornaments featuring the playful cats. "We did not intend to do these projects. It was all customer demand," said Newton, a part-time mental health counselor. Packaging and shipping the products and responding to questions is like a full-time job, she said. Tim Newton, a semi-retired engineer, said the couple doesn't expect to make money, or certainly not much. They're still paying off up-front costs. But it's been fun talking to people from other continents about lynx and Alaska. So far, he's shipped...

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges blasted the “jackass remarks” made by the head of the city’s police union on Tuesday, while Police Chief Janeé Harteau issued a more measured response in the wake of four Minneapolis police officers who walked off an off-duty job at a Minnesota Lynx game Saturday. The officers quit the job before the game over the decision by players to criticize racial profiling and wear pregame warm up jerseys, that said “Black Lives Matter,” but also included the Dallas Police logo. Minneapolis Police Federation President Bob Kroll said in an interview with the Star Tribune on Monday...

Four off-duty Minneapolis police officers working the Minnesota Lynx game at Target Center on Saturday night walked off the job after the players held a news conference denouncing racial profiling, then wore Black Lives Matter pregame warm-up jerseys. Lt. Bob Kroll, president of the Minneapolis Police Federation, the union that represents rank-and-file officers, praised them for quitting. "I commend them for it," he said. Kroll said the four officers also removed themselves from a list of officers working future games. He did not know who the officers were. "Others said they heard about it and they were not going to...

Wildlife advocates want a federal judge to order faster action on a recovery plan for imperiled Canada lynx. ... Officials also say that lynx face a relatively low degree of threat compared to other protected species. The Fish and Wildlife Service was forced to come up with a timeline on the recovery document when Molloy last month expressed frustration with the government's progress. The judge said the "stutter-step" approach by federal officials necessitated court intervention. The lawsuit pending before Molloy was brought by Friends of the Wild Swan, Rocky Mountain Wild, Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and the San Juan Citizens Alliance....

With the news about the Mozilla Foundation and the desire of many FReepers to drop the Firefox browser, there are some viable (IMHO) alternatives, both of which are character-based:Links is text WWW browser with tables and frames. Once the jeep had crashed I calmed down. It was a Soviet jeep, a UAZ, and it was now lodged between a birch tree and a ditch. I lifted my head. Nothing was hurt. The mountain road had been frightening. The motor had screeched and heaved over frozen bogs. The snow was thick and fresh. The only marks were animal tracks. We thought we saw a wolf. The UAZ was stuck. The men were now out of the car and shouting at each other. It was only then that I realised how serious the situation was. We were in Tuva,...

The U.S. Forest Service has re-examined the effects of a logging project on lynx habitat in an attempt to lift a judge's block of the Lolo National Forest project. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy ruled in June that the Forest Service did not properly analyze the cumulative effects of the 2,038-acre Colt-Summit project on lynx habitat.

Curious if hunters/outdoors/wildlife FRs know if this is a Bobcat. Here's some details not in the picture itself: Norther Casco Maine near Brunswick, about 1am a couple nights ago. Cabin at end of tidal cove, woodsy, relatively sparsely populated. Most Maine wild animals make regular appearances in my yard. Note my black and white 1/2 coon cat in the background. (The well in is 7 inches tall for reference.) My cat grew up in the wild, raised a family in the wild, nothing scares her. She chased this cat off the property after losing patience. It's a night photo -...

Could it be the LYNX effect? The age old feud between cats and dogs seems to have been put to one side as Lilica the German Shepherd becomes inseparable from her feline friends Liza, Viki and male Muro. But what makes this friendship even more unusual is as well as being cats, the cubs are also wild lynxes. Lilica is helping to teach the little cubs how to fend for themselves in the wild as part of a conservation project in the National Park Velka Fatra, Slovakia. The animals met through a scheme in the country called ‘Return of Lynxes’...

It sits there in the sun, looking like the covered trash can that it is. But this receptacle is more than it seems. Costing $5,500, the "BigBelly" is a computerized, solar-powered compactor that, supporters say, can dramatically reduce garbage-collection costs. And that's the hope of Lynx, the bus service that serves Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. Lynx has purchased four of the devices and is in the midst of a three-month test to see how well they work. The $22,000 bill was paid with federal-stimulus dollars. One month into the trial, Lynx officials say they like what they see. Doug...

CORVALLIS, Ore. – As wolf populations grow in parts of the West, most of the focus has been on their value in aiding broader ecosystem recovery – but a new study from Oregon State University also points out that they could play an important role in helping to save other threatened species. In research published today in Wildlife Society Bulletin, scientists suggest that a key factor in the Canada lynx being listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act is the major decline of snowshoe hares. The loss of hares, the primary food of the lynx, in turn may be...

SNIPPET: "CHARLOTTE, N.C.— The FBI is asking for the public's help in identifying a man who was seen near a restricted area along the light rail near uptown Charlotte. A worker monitoring security cameras said the man was spotted in the area in late April, according to investigators. The man was clearly in an area he wasn't supposed to be in and was acting suspiciously, the FBI said."

Wildlife officials have dropped their appeal of a court ruling that forces the government to revise its flawed plan to protect critical habitat for Canada lynx. The move means the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will have to reconsider areas in Colorado, Montana and Idaho for critical habitat designation... A second plan in 2009 designated 39,000 square miles in Maine, Minnesota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington as critical habitat. But U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy last year faulted wildlife officials for excluding Colorado, where lynx are making a strong comeback, and some national forests in Montana and Idaho. Some Colorado...

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service erred little when it designated a vast area scattered over six states as critical habitat for the threatened Canada lynx...The designated habitat totals 39,000 square miles... The Fish and Wildlife Service designated the habitat last year, prompting a lawsuit from snowmobile enthusiast groups in Wyoming and Washington state. The groups worry the designation could close off areas to snowmobiling and harm snowmobile-related businesses. She is the wife of Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, who nominated her for the bench. "We're really pleased she's upheld the designation almost entirely," said Sean Helle, an attorney with the...
