Tuesday’s congressional race between U.S. Rep Mark Schauer and Republican opponent Tim Walberg is more about policy than the people who are running. It is a critical opportunity for voters in our community to express their concerns about policy decisions of the last two years under President Obama. We believe Jackson County voters must send a message to Washington, and that is why we strongly endorse Tim Walberg. Walberg will go to our nation’s capital to fight a left-leaning, spendthrift, socialist agenda and restore fiscal discipline to an out-of-control Democratic Congress. Schauer will continue to support policies that will hurt...

Michigan's 7th Congressional District would represent a high-profile upset for Republicans, given that the district includes Jackson, the birthplace of the Republican Party, and it had been in Republican hands from 2993 to 2009. Freshman Congressman Mark Schauer, a Democrat, narrowly defeated the GOP's Tim Walberg in 2008 and is facing a rematch this mid-term election. It's an anti-incumbency election in a slightly Republican-leaning district, so Walberg is presenting a strong challenge for Schauer. The race, as it stands, is a toss-up. ------------------ Key Differences between Tim Walberg and Mark Schauer Jobs: Schauer was a supporter of the stimulus bill,...

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), the only openly lesbian member of Congress, was at Affirmations June 14 to support U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek) in his reelection bid. "We need Mark Schauer back in Washington," said Baldwin. "As members of the LGBT community, we need to make sure our strong allies, like Mark, keep their seats in Congress." "I am proud to be a co-sponsor of ENDA (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act), I voted in favor of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act," Schauer said to the group of about 20 community leaders and donors. Schauer said that pundits believe...

Mark Schauer's earmarks exceeded $55 million.Aware of the national backlash against runaway federal spending, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer said earmarks he recently requested are aimed at strengthening the local economy. Schauer submitted 42 earmark requests for 2011, totaling $55.1 million for his district, with about $8 million slated for 10 projects in Jackson County.(snipped) Last year, Schauer submitted 41 earmarks, totaling more than $80 million; about $33 million was approved. Of eight earmark requests Schauer made last year for projects in Jackson County, two were approved, and both for substantially less than the amount requested. Schauer said that since he...

OLDWATER (WTVB) - It was a hostile standing room only crowd in Coldwater that greeted and at times jeered Representative Mark Schauer yesterday afternoon as the Seventh District Congressman attempted to find support for the recently passed healthcare reform bill which Schauer voted in favor of. However, most of those in the audience at the Burnside Senior Center would have none of that and peppered Schauer with questions about how the government can afford to pay for the reform measure.

U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer said today he plans to vote in favor of health-care reform. The freshman Democratic Congressman had been undecided in the weeks leading up to the vote, but made his decision after the Congressional Budget Office released its estimates that the bill will reduce the deficit by $130 billion over 10 years. “ I needed to see the bill and the Congressional Budget Office score,” Schauer told the Citizen Patriot in an exclusive interview. “The bill fundamentally does what I hoped it would.”

A lively three-way Republican primary is taking shape in Michigan, where attorney Brian Rooney, who made his candidacy official on Thursday, is running against former Rep. Tim Walberg and rancher-real estate investor Marvin Carlson. The winner of the GOP primary will face Rep. Mark Schauer next November. The prospect of taking on Democrat Schauer is pretty inviting to Republicans in the 7th District, which includes the cities of Battle Creek and Jackson. Another GOP prospect has been considering getting in the race, too -- Bill Martin, CEO of the Michigan Association of Realtors. However, sources on the ground say Martin...

Washington, Sep 29 - U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) today issued the following statement opposing the Financial Stabilization Package, the deal struck on the bailout of the financial services sector. "Today our financial markets face serious challenges that could result in dire consequences, and while Congress can take action to avert further economic distress, Congress must not take action just to take action. While I applaud the efforts of House Republicans to improve this proposal, the bailout bill up for a vote today is nothing more than an expensive, taxpayer-funded band aid that will not solve our long-term economic problems....

John Schwarz are leading fellow Republicans in the race for a congressional seat in southern Michigan, according to a poll released Tuesday. A third candidate, attorney Brad Smith, won the endorsement of the conservative Club for Growth on Tuesday. The endorsement could bring an infusion of cash to Smith's campaign; the Washington-based group said its members will donate total contributions "in the six-figure range." Smith is the son of U.S. Rep. Nick Smith, R-Addison,...
