Talk about a sacrifice that will warm your heart. A group of older Japanese folks are asking for permission to clean up the contaminated nuclear power station in Fukushima. More than 200 retirees are volunteering to take the place of young people who are exposing themselves to high levels of radiation. The group figures they have less than 20 years to live and will be dead before any radiation induced cancer develops. It's a different story for the young people who have battled in this war zone for three months and are at great risk for developing cancer as they...

Rancier Drive just after 9:00p.m. holding a samurai sword. He demanded cash, and at some point he poked someone with the sword. That person was not seriously injured. The man was described as a black male, about 5'7' tall. He was said to be wearing a long sleeved button down shirt with tan pants. There was no immediate word on how much money he took.

An Englishman who almost sliced off the ear of a home invader with an ornamental samurai sword has been acquitted of all charges after a trial. He was found not guilty of unlawful wounding. The home invader had threatened to rape his wife and kill his teenage children. He used the sword because it was the only weapon he could find. You may recall that a New Jersey college student recently killed a burglar legally with a samurai sword. The Englishman told authorities that if the first thing he had found to defend his family had been an umbrella, he...

Masamune Date is not an obvious heart-throb for today’s young Japanese women. He has an aristocratic lineage and love of the arts — but he is also a one-eyed ruthless killer. He lost an eye to smallpox and in his relentless pursuit of power is said to have slaughtered his own brother, as well as Christian missionaries, Korean peasants and countless of his compatriots.

With one swift slash from a samurai sword, John Pontolillo made a convincing case for ... private ownership of handguns? Oh, you betcha. Pontolillo is an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University. Before Sept. 15, that's all he was... But nine days ago, Pontolillo went from being a simple college guy to being in the center of the maelstrom that developed after he slashed a burglar in the backyard of a house he shared with fellow JHU students. Pontolillo used a samurai sword to defend himself after the burglar lunged at him. With one swish he nearly severed the burglar's left...

When Google Earth added historical maps of Japan ...Google failed to judge how its offering would be received, as it has often done in Japan. The company is now facing inquiries from the Justice Ministry and angry accusations of prejudice because its maps detailed the locations of former low-caste communities. The maps date back to the country's feudal era, when shoguns ruled and a strict caste system was in place. At the bottom of the hierarchy were a class called the "burakumin," ethnically identical to other Japanese but forced to live in isolation because they did jobs associated with death,...

The Bushido Code: The Eight Virtues of the Samurai Posted By Brett & Kate McKay On September 14, 2008 @ 8:03 pm “So, boy. You wish to serve me?” Silhouetted against the blue-black sky, the horse-mounted samurai with the horned helmet towered over me like a demon as I knelt in the dirt before him. I could not see his face but there was no mistaking the authority in his growling tone, nor the hint of mockery in his question. I tried to speak and managed only a faint croak. My mouth had gone dry, as parched as a man...

Imitation Samurai swords are to be banned after a spate of attacks in the UK, say ministers. The Home Office has confirmed plans to outlaw the weapons in England and Wales after putting forward the idea earlier this year. Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said there was a clear danger to the public posed by easily-available swords. The proposal is expected to stop short of banning genuine Japanese swords held by collectors or genuine enthusiasts. In March 2007 the Home Office proposed banning imitation Samurai swords after representations from both MPs and the public. Ministers in Scotland had proposed a similar...
