  • A vintage ISIS performance': Outrage over Sky reporter's shockingly casual reference to horrific

A Sky News reporter has infuriated viewers by referring to last night's brutal attack in Nice as 'vintage Isis'. Viewers took to Twitter to chastise reporter Lisa Holland for her 'disgusting' choice of words, which they referred to as 'gutter journalism'. She used the words just a couple of hours after the attack which killed at least 84 people celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city at around 10.30pm local time last night.
  • Astronomy Picture of the Day -- GW151226: A Second Confirmed Source of Gravitational Radiation

Explanation: A new sky is becoming visible. When you look up, you see the sky as it appears in light -- electromagnetic radiation. But just over the past year, humanity has begun to see our once-familiar sky as it appears in a different type of radiation -- gravitational radiation. Today, the LIGO collaboration is reporting the detection of GW151226, the second confirmed flash of gravitational radiation after GW150914, the historic first detection registered three months earlier. As its name implies, GW151226 was recorded in late December of 2015. It was detected simultaneously by both LIGO facilities in Washington and Louisiana,...
  • Foodies, Restaurant Writers Make 'Unexpected' Landing in Napa Hot Air Balloon

The morning was supposed to be serene and idyllic with a group of restaurant writers, bloggers and foodies soaring high over Napa’s gorgeous wine country. Instead, Joanne Sasvari, a 40-something freelance writer for the Vancouver Sun, and her group were forced to make what she called an “unexpected” landing, before being rescued by the California Highway Patrol. That's because the winds picked up early Tuesday about 8 a.m., making it difficult for the pilot to land normally. Still, the entire ordeal took all of about 45 minutes, she said, and no one was injured after the balloon got stranded in...

A global robotic arms race "is virtually inevitable" unless a ban is imposed on autonomous weapons, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and 1,000 academics, researchers and public figures have warned. In an open letter presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aries, the Future of Life Institute signatories caution that "starting a military AI arms race is a bad idea, and should be prevented by a ban on offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control". Although the letter, first reported by the Guardian, notes that "we believe that AI has great potential to benefit humanity in many...

Referring to Israel as an “apartheid state” is a “blatant lie”, Economy Minister and Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett said on Thursday. Bennett gave a series of interviews to international media outlets and, in one of these interviews, was asked by a Sky News interviewer whether he is “worried” that the term “apartheid” is being used by some British parliamentarians in reference to Israel.

Britain's Sky News channel, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox company, has used the self confessed 'prejudiced' Mira Bar-Hillel as a talking head and authority on the subject of anti-Semitism. Bar-Hillel, who is known for her irrational loathing of the State of Israel, was featured on Sky News as a panellist discussing the rise of anti-Semitism in the UK. The author and commentator has form on the subject, and once wrote (emphasis added): "The Jews of today scare me and I find it almost impossible to talk to most of them, including relatives. Any criticism of the...

Time-lapse footage captured by an NBC Bay Area weather camera shows rain and wind as it moved across the San Francisco Bay on Friday afternoon. Friday's storm is part of a second round of rain this week to dump down on the region. The storm sparked a barrage of trouble, including the death of a motorist in Oakland, the rescue of a person from "frigid" waters in a San Jose creek, widespread flooding and power outages. Bay Area Wet Weather Sparks Crashes, Flooding, Rescues, Outages The rain, which is much needed as California is suffering through a drought, is now...

Explanation: Each panel shows one day. With 360 movie panels, the sky over (almost) an entire year is shown in time lapse format as recorded by a video camera on the roof of the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco, California. The camera recorded an image every 10 seconds from before sunrise to after sunset and from mid-2009 to mid-2010. A time stamp showing the local time of day is provided on the lower right. The videos are arranged chronologically, with July 28 shown on the upper left, and January 1 located about about half way down. Although every day lasts...

As I wrote a couple of days ago, the annual Geminid meteor shower peaked last night, raining down a magnificent display of shooting stars. Did you go out and watch? A lot of photographers did. One was John Chumack, an accomplished astrophotographer, who captured this amazing shot of three meteors: Chumack was in Yellow Springs, Ohio on the evening of the 12th (the day before the peak!) using a simple DSLR camera and a fisheye lens. This was a 25-second exposure, enough to see Orion, Jupiter (the bright “star” above Orion), Gemini—the direction from which the eponymous meteors appear to...

  • 'Sky Worm' Drone Readies for US Military Flight Tests (airship drone)

Argus One airship, U.S. military drone Drones and satellites dominate the U.S. military's surveillance arsenal, but fleets of unmanned airships could soon join in keeping an eye on battlefields. One robotic airship contender, the modular Argus One, has upcoming flight demonstrations scheduled at a U.S. Department of Energy Nevada Test Site that hosted nuclear bomb tests during the Cold War. The Argus One's design resembles a segmented sky worm made of connecting modules, and has the flexibility to quickly change its flight path as it slinks through the sky. It can also carry 30 pounds of surveillance sensors or...

Take this with the customary grain of salt that accompanies most breaking reports from urban-warfare theaters, and perhaps especially in Tripoli, where Moammar Qaddafi’s sons are either in custody or acting as tour guides for the capital of Libya.  Rebels now report having reached Qaddafi’s compound, which means that either the regime will fall shortly, or … not:  Libyan rebels battled on Tuesday around Muammar Gaddafi’s headquarters, where a son of the veteran leader had emerged overnight to confound reports of his capture and to rally cheering loyalists for a rearguard fightback.NATO jets flew in support of the rebels, who...

As violence and riots sweep through sections London, the rest of the western world can only watch stunned. Earlier, we showed you some of the terrifying pictures taken by British photojournalists, but there’s also tons of video, recorded by Londoners on their cell phones and Flip cameras from rooftops and windows. A journalist however, Sky News’ Mark Stone, was brave (foolish?) enough to go right down on the street and record a pretty stunning video as he forces his camera right in the face of a group of looters. Fortunately for Stone the area he was in (Clapham Junction) doesn’t...

Stargazers now have their Graceland. The Channel Island of Sark, located 80 miles south of England, has been designated as the world's first dark-sky island. Dark-sky communities are places with very little to no light pollution. As a result, the stars are far easier to see and more fun to look at. According to a buzzy article from SPACE.com, Sark is just 4.5 square miles and has "no public street lighting, no paved roads, and no cars." In other words, save for the occasional flashlight or matchstick, there aren't a lot of things to interfere with the nighttime display, which...

LABARRE — Hundreds of dead and dying birds littered a quarter-mile stretch of highway in Pointe Coupee Parish on Monday as motorists drove over and around them. State biologists are trying to determine what led to the deaths of the estimated 500 red-winged blackbirds and starlings on La. 1 just down the road from Pointe Coupee Central High School. The discovery of the dead birds — some of which were lying face down, clumped in groups, while others were face up with their wings outstretched and rigid legs pointing upward — comes just three days after more than 3,000 blackbirds...
