Richard Ojeda, the firebrand state senator and ex-U.S. Army officer, is set to announce his intention to run for president in 2020 less than a week after losing his bid for West Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District. Ojeda, who rose to prominence earlier this year for his role in the state’s teachers' strike after voicing support for an increase in wages, is expected to formally announce his intention to run at 12 p.m. E.T. having already signed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to create a campaign “Ojeda for President,” reports Roll Call.

Former West Virginia state senator and retired U.S. Army major Richard Ojeda has made things official. He plans to run for president as a Democrat in 2020, despite a highly-anticipated, overly-packed Democratic field of contenders. Ojeda made the decision after losing his congressional bid in WV-03 last Tuesday, The Intercept reported. Ojeda's plan is simple: to go back to the Democratic Party's roots. He believes the Democrats can win over working people if they paint President Donald Trump out to be a populist fraud and paint a stark contract to Trump's inability to "drain the swamp.""I have been a Democrat ever since...

PUBLIC NOTICE WEST VIRGINIA MEDICAID PROGRAM REGARDING: WEST VIRGINIA CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 1 NOVEMBER 9, 2018 On November 6, 2018 West Virginia voters ratified West Virginia Constitutional Amendment 1, which states: “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires funding of abortion.” This amendment in turn abrogated the holding by the West Virginia Supreme Court in Women’s Health Center of West Virginia, Inc. v.Panepinto (1993) that West Virginia Code §9-2-11, which limits Medicaid funds paying for pregnancy terminations to several limited circumstances, is unconstitutional. As a result of the ratification of this Constitutional Amendment as described...

Every red state Democratic senator who voted against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation in October lost their re-election bids. Democratic Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Joe Donnelly of Indiana voted against President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick – all three lost on Tuesday. The only red state Democrat to support Kavanaugh was rewarded with a re-election victory. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin won Tuesday night against Republican state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. His success allowed the Democratic Party to salvage what was otherwise a lackluster performance up and down Senate races. Trump campaigned...

Pro-lifers won a major victory in West Virginia Tuesday, as voters approved a ballot initiative clarifying that the state constitution contains no “right” to abortion. With 97% of precincts reporting in, Amendment 1 passed by a margin of 17,184 votes, West Virginia Metro News reports. It amends the West Virginia Constitution to include a line stating, “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion.” The measure is meant to counteract a 1993 ruling by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals that has long forced Medicaid to fund abortions as a...

West Virginia is one of 17 states that forces its taxpayers to pay for elective abortions. But that could change now that state voters approved Amendment 1 saying there is no right to abortion. West Virginians tonight approved a constitutional amendment that makes it clear that their state does not recognize abortion as a “right.” The Amendment One ballot measure passed the state legislature in March, and West Virginians just voted for it on their state ballot. Now that it has passed, the following language will be added to the state constitution: “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a...

Fake pro-life Democrat Joe Manchin has won his bid for re-election in West Virginia against Pro-Life candidate Pat Morrissey. Manchin insists he’s a pro-life Democrat. But when is a pro-life Democrat not really a pro-life Democrat? When it’s Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia — who was caught posing for a picture with a group of Planned Parenthood abortion activists. Last year, Manchin was caught holding a sign stating “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” along with an abortion activist. Senator Manchin has voted at odds with his purported pro-life views. He recently voted against a measure that would overturn President...

If Joe Manchin loses in West Virginia, that will be one mountain-mama of a story. RealClearPolitics now assesses the race as a toss-up, moving it out of the Leans Democrat yesterday as part of its Election Eve final calls. That would be perhaps the most stunning upset of the night, not because of West Virginia’s voting character but because of Manchin’s storied record as a political survivor: Democratic incumbent senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia is in the fight of his political life, as his race against Republican Patrick Morrisey was changed to “toss up” on the eve of the...

Time are EST You could be in for a long wait to know the results of the midterm elections and which party ends up controlling the House and Senate. But polling places close earlier in some states than others — and they could provide a hint of things to come as the night progresses. 6 p.m. Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District: President Trump won this district near Lexington by 15 points. Democrats are fielding retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath against three-term incumbent Andy Barr. The race is rated as a toss-up. A Democratic victory could be an early sign of...

For all the media fixation on the "lies" President Trump tells, sometimes he has an uncanny knack of telling the unvarnished truth. So it was on Friday night when Trump told those gathered at a West Virginia rally: "Sometimes it’s not as exciting to talk about the economy because we have a lot of other things to talk about." That unscripted line left some Republican strategists nodding in agreement and wondering about what might have been. Republicans are bracing for the loss of the House of Representatives with operatives citing the lack of a coherent economic message and unnecessary distractions...

Pro-life Group Slams Manchin for Refusing to Support Amendment 1 Charleston, WV – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today announced the details of a $500,000 campaign to educate West Virginia voters on Amendment 1. The pro-life ballot initiative could save the lives of more than 1,500 unborn West Virginians a year by stopping taxpayer-funded abortions. Currently, elective abortions up to five months of pregnancy are paid for by taxpayers under Medicaid. In January Metro News reported that the number of abortions funded by taxpayers had more than tripled in the last five years. The campaign...

ST. ALBANS, WV (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia says a city's proposed vagrancy ordinance is unconstitutional and discriminates against people for being homeless. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the local ACLU sent a letter to St. Albans officials Friday asking city council members to reconsider before voting on the ordinance during the next regular council meeting Nov. 5. ACLU of West Virginia Legal Director Loree Stark says the proposal is too vaguely written and doesn't define what sort of behavior is permitted or prohibited, leaving the discretion up to individual officers.
