Giving Hollywood the [PURPLE] finger: We need YOUR sign ideas for our rally at the Academy Awards!
"Shut Up, and ACT!" Hollywood conservatives plan "Rally for Responsibility" at Academy Awards (2/27) ^ | February 22, 2005 | RonDog, rantblogger [and YOU!]

Calling all creative FReepers (and lurkers)!
The L.A. Chapter needs YOUR advice.

As many of you know by know, the Hollywood Resistance Force
(also known as the L.A. Chapter of the Free Republic Network)
is planning a "Rally For Responsibility" outside this year's Academy Awards.

FReeper rantblogger has suggested that we bring GIANT foam hands to the rally,
with the index finger painted PURPLE...

...to show OUR solidarity with the brave Iraqi voters,
and to remind the leftists in Hollywood that if they had THEIR way,
Iraq would not now be free.

We have now secured ONE HUNDRED (100) white foam mitts like THIS one, from www.spiritindustries.net:

PH24 - 23"
(in WHITE, with NO printing)
This Thursday night, we will be having a "sign painting" [and "FINGER painting"] party, where we will be painting the index fingers of those foam mitts PURPLE.
This is where YOU come in. :o)
We need some creative SIGN ideas, like THIS one:

IRAQ: 1
Hollywood: 0
What do YOU think?
What is the best MESSAGE for us to send to Hollywood?
(And to the BILLIONS who may be watching at home on TV.)

As I posted on a PREVIOUS thread:

We may not be able to get very many people into the PRIME media location at Hollywood & Highland.

LAST YEAR, there were so many people jammed into that corner that the LAPD had to close the sidewalks to EVERYONE not already inside a two-block perimeter by noon.
Even TED HAYES (who arrived just before 2 pm) was not allowed into that "prime location" -- as there were Oscar fans EVERYWHERE. :(

I plan to review our options with the LAPD later this week, but for now, here is our CURRENT strategy, from the pre-FReep thread:

...We expect that SOME the TV cameras, wire service photographers and print journalists will start arriving as early as noon, but MOST of the media attention should be from 3 pm to 5 pm – during the Red Carpet ceremonies.
The limos should start driving west on Hollywood Blvd (from Wilcox, or Vine) at about 3 pm – right past our position in front of the billboard at Hollywood and Whitley.
Our current plan is to have an advance team (led by Ted Hayes and RonDog) [and Outraged?] arrive at Hollywood and Highland – to "stake out" a position near the steel fence facing the Red Carpet arrival area VERY EARLY Sunday morning. This area will rapidly be OVERWHELMED by Oscar fans from all across the USA, as they squeeze in to perhaps get a glimpse of their favorite star’s arrival...
Anyone arriving before noon should attempt to hook up with us there. Ted and I may decide to give up our “front row” positions to others, who may be able to hold signs.
The SECOND team will gather in front of the billboard at Hollywood and Whitley – three blocks east of Highland. Some time around noon, Ted and I will break away from our "front row" positions, and move to join the second team (at Hollywood and Whitley) – where we will lead a "parade" down Hollywood, from Whitley to as close to Highland as we can get.
We will know more soon.

Last year, since the "Lord of the Rings" so completely DOMINATED the Oscar nominations, we went with a lighter theme:

(Click on THIS image for a LARGER image.)

From our 2004 Oscar FReep report thread:
Greats of old, decorum reign at the Oscars
[FReep report: BIG crowd, no RATs, no Moore. Pix later.]

Left to right: ALOHA RONNIE, Cinnamon Girl, FIT-AIM-ACT-1, Larry Sands,
TED HAYES, Ginny Sands, RonDog, Harry Nash (with cartoon hand)
Photo hosting courtesy of daviddennis

Note that the signs that are most readble -- from a distance, on television -- all have the LARGE LETTERS, and FEW WORDS.

This is (in general) the kind of sign ideas that we are looking for THIS year...

Big styrofoam purple fingers for everyone, that would be so cool.

That is our plan. :o)

There will be HUNDRREDS and HUNDREDS of Oscar fans from all across the USA crammed into a very small area, and only perhaps 20 to 30 of of us...

...but if we can pass out the purple fingers strategically, it may APPEAR (on television) that there are many more of us than our numbers would indicate. ;)
This worked very well for us TWO YEARS AGO -- on the eve our liberation of Iraq -- when we passed out hundreds of American flags (to both FReepers and just ordinary Oscar fans) -- as seen from THIS collection of 2003 Oscar FReep images:

image from FReeper phark

It appeared (to the media) that the crowd was MUCH MORE patriotic than they had expected. :o)

"Hollywood, anyone whose anyone is doing that Hunter S. Thompson thing...."
LOL!

We already have MULTIPLE themes in play, though:

1 - "Thank You, Hollywood" and "Boomerang" -- from the Citizens United billboard, and AnnaZ's video

2 - "Shut Up, and ACT!" and "Rally For Responsibility"-- from our pre-FReep rally flyer
and now:
3 - "purple fingers."
The common theme, I think, is that Hollywood has been IRRESPONSIBLE -- almost totally ignoring what is most important to many Americans: 9/11, and the War on Terrorism.
(Except for Michael Moore's hate-filled "Fahrenheit 9/11" propaganda.)

I told a friend about this freep, and he really liked
the "Shut Up and Act" theme!

Great thinking on everyone's part..

Because you never know what type of
Political Grandstanding some actors
are going to do on the stage that night.
