The Minuteman Project mistakes the nature of our immigration problem

It will be fascinating to see how the Minuteman Project, the brainstorm of Aliso Viejo resident James Gilchrist, comes off now that President Bush has referred to the effort as a "vigilante" operation of which he disapproves. It has certainly stirred a lot of interest, pro and con.

"Such as mechanics on commercial airliners, .....a job that American mechanics absolutely hate because of the required licensing, low pay and poor benefits."

This is so funny.
Walmart just got shafted by the feds, because of illegals.
And guess who the "same feds" have working at our airports as
"homeland security agents"...
Shouldn't the feds give themselves the same punishment as Walmart got for doing almost the same thing?

The population of Mexico are very under educated and spineless or they would have done something to correct all the problems in their country already.

My grandmother, who died last year at age 99, told me similiar stories of 1920's Louisiana.

Men who wouldn't work and support their families faced certain retribution from the community.

As there were no federal or state aid for indigents the neighbors knew who didn't have food and why.

"Don't look now, but I think that has already happened in California."

And it just keeps gettin' better.
Is Vicente Fox gonna "bail out" Kalli-fornica when it goes totally bankrupt?

President Bush said, "I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America. I'm for enforcing the law in a rational way."

Apparently Pres Bush equates "enforcing the law in a rational way" to kissing vicente fox's a$$.

Well, it's a great phrase and I intend to use it often. I hope I don't get banned! LOL! Dare I ask why Jim has a disdain for the Minutemen???

His brother has a manufacturing plant in Mexico. I think Jim is keeping a low profile on this so that nothing bad happens to that plant. That's what happens when you dance with the Devil.

JR, is there some reason that this rumor is floating around about you? Is there any real truth to any of this stuff? I don't really have any intention of hanging out in the desert fiddling with the Border Patrol's voicemail--it seems like a colossal waste of time. But notwithstanding the notion that there are better things to do, the general intent of the Minutemen seemed okay to me, even if the Klan or Stormfront wackos agreed with it. I am sure you got a few thousand pings to sort through, but given the rumor seems to be spreading through your site, thought you might want to address it.

I'm not sure how you advance the issue against illegal immigration which has merits in it's own right without attracting such detritus which has very different reasons for supporting it. How do you vett people?

Yes. Even the Democratic party has had members who used to be Klan members. Sen Jim Byrd of West Virginia used to be a Klan Kleagle".

Byrd

"Ex-Klansman Robert Byrd, the senior senator from West Virginia, casually used the phrase "white n*gger" twice on national TV this weekend. Enraged civil rights groups organized a protest campaign against Sen. Byrd and demanded that he undergo sensitivity training ... not.

"The ex-Klansman, you see, is a Democrat. Democrats can join hate groups and utter the ugliest racial slurs and get away with it because they are Democrats."

Great. And in your rosy 'annexation' scenario, those poor uneducated people with no spines would elect socialist representatives who promise them the moon and stars paid for by America's taxpayers, and the costs would absolutely kill the American middle class. And all this would be occuring during a civil war, because there is no damn way that many of us would tolerate any situation at all similar to what you describe.

They are but one state and the socialists could only play with their own state.
As that state sees other successful states, they people would fire the bad guys and get normal ones to achieve what others have done for themselves.

No modern government (including democracies) are ever comfortable with citizens organizing and arming themselves, no matter what the cause is. Governments fear organized and armed citizens because there is a possibility that they may be tempted to challenge the government. If the Minutemen crosses the line on the law, even a minor infraction, the federal/state LE are instructed to come down hard and cause legal hardships to see if they can discourage recruitment of law abiding citizens. If the Minutemen are well discipline, then the federal/state will infiltrate the organization with provocateurs and start an incident, so the organization will get into more legal problems and become discredited by the MSM. I think right now, the US government is gearing up their covert and legal resources to destroy the Minutemen because they cannot afford an armed paramilitary within the US that may challenge them in the future.

If the folks that participate can keep their heads straight, I think this could be a very constructive project. I think it's important, though, that people try to keep in mind that this struggle can't be won by engaging illegal immigrants. I don't even consider those poor, miserable folks to be the real enemy.

Some of our most powerful adversaries are here on this side of the border. ;-)

I thought I read it in one of JR's posts (or maybe on his profile page). If Jim says no, then I stand corrected.

Why is the President in favor of legal status for illegals? That's one point I've missed over the years and I don't understand it.

I'm guessing, that if shots get fired from the other side of the border, you watch and see if thousands more undocumented Border Patrol Agents dont suddenly appear to help this side out.......just my two cents.

You're probably right cactus. I know of one for sure.
