28 March - The funeral of Maj. Cengiz Toytunc who was killed while on duty in Hebron as part of the Temporary Internatinal Presence in Hebron (TIPH) was held in Ankara today. A significant point in the ceremony was the fact that Palestinian embassador Fuad Yasin was not present at the ceremony and represented by minor embassy officials while the Israeli Embassador David Sultan not only attended the ceremony but shook the hands of all Turkish government and military officials at the ceremony and even participated in the funeral prayer. President Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, the Chief of General Staff Gen. Huseyin Kivrikoglu, several cabinet ministers, party leaders, commanders of the Armed Forces and other high ranking civilian and military officials were alos at the ceremony.
9 Bullets in Maj. Toytunc's Head
As the investigation into the incident that ended in Maj. Toytunc's death continues, a decision taken by the office of Turkish Chief of Genral Staff has shifted to blame even closer to the Palestinians. The preliminary results of the autopsy conducted on Maj. Toyrunc's body reached the office of the General Staff yesterday. 9 bullets were discovered in the skull but the type of these bullets have not yet been announced. However, this morning, the office of the General Staff has asked the Ministry of National Defence to sign the aggrement between Israel and Turkey in relation with the modernization of 170 Turkish M60A3 MBTs by IMI, Israel. The deal is worth $700 Million.

A short summary of the original article in Turkish. I kind of souped up the title though. I'm getting the hang of this journalism thing :-)

I would think that pissing off the Turks is not a smart thing to do.

I would think that pissing off the Turks is not a smart thing to do.The battle lines are being quickly drawn. The fact that Egypt and Jordan did not attend the Beirut Arab Summit keeps them neutral.

According to the history books, getting into a war against the Turks is a very bad idea.

What a bunch of geniuses those Palestinians are. Now they've got not only Israel mad at them, but Turkey too. Not a great idea to get not only the most powerful military in the middle east mad at you, but a NATO ally as well.

thanks for the post. I'm glad we have our Turkish friends in the region. Too bad that they have some of the worst neighbors around!

Let's see now, the U.K., Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Israel... yes, this coalition's shaping up very nicely now. I'd say Cheney did a darn fine job on his middle-eastern junket.

"According to the history books, getting into a war against the Turks is a very bad idea." A century ago, the Ottoman Empire was, "The sick man of Europe." If they can resist EU membership, and it's socialist overtones, Turkey may re-emerge as one of the most vital, healthy nations in the region. Turkish loyalty is not given lightly, and cultivating their unwavering friendship would be, IMHO, well worth the effort.

Turk2, you forgot to ping me dude, what's up with that?
Oh yes, the Palestinians have gone and really done it now, not only the biggest military in the region, but a NATO ally, and an Israeli Ally, me thinks the Palestinians are not only barbarians, but they are terminally stupid. YOU DO NOT PISS OFF THE TURKS, NOT EVER!! Bunch of fricking MORONS!!!

Don't forget the smaller Emirates.

Right on, I spent some time in Turkey when I was in the Navy. Turkey is without some of the modern conveniences, but I didn't see them as some screwey 3rd-world country, either. I had a good time, they treated the American soldiers very well. The Turks are a good, strong people. And, they're good allies!
To: Aric2000
Yeah, I'd say the Pallies boffed this one real good! The Pallies want to be martyrs, the Turks will oblige them, I promise you!

The peregrinations of history are fascinating, and one thing that has particularly fascinated me is what would have happened if the declining Ottoman Empire of the late 19th Century had become the beneficiary of the oil in its boundaries. Would it have rebounded? Or would the oil simply have allowed an obsolete system to have a new lease on life, hence no Attaturk or modernity?

Many thanks for the post, Turk2.
My condolences to the family of this very young officer (a_Turk, on the photo you posted on another thread he looks even younger than his stated age).
As I said earlier, it is really an abomination that Palestinians would resort to murdering someone who actually came to protect them. The life is lost, however, and nobody will replace him for his mother...
