Ex-CBS News Prez Can't Stand Rather
NewsMax ^ | 1/13/05 | Carl Limbacher

Former CBS News president Van Gordon Sauter said Thursday that Dan Rather's liberal bias has so permeated the "CBS Evening News" that even he can't stand to watch anymore.

"I stopped watching it some time ago," the ex-network news boss writes in today's Los Angeles Times. "The unremitting liberal orientation finally became too much for me."

Sauter, who ran the Tiffany network's news division in the early 1980s, said he still checks in from time-to time, but "less and less frequently." Instead, "I increasingly drift to NBC News and Fox and MSNBC," he said.

The former news exec said this week's firings of four CBS employees in response to the Rathergate scandal exposed the real problem for network news:

"A large swath of the society doesn't trust the news media," he contended. "And for many, it's even stronger than that: They abhor the media and perceive it as an escalating threat to the society."

If the erosion of public trust isn't stopped, warns Sauter, viewers will look elsewhere for their news product.

"Those readers and viewers most comfortable in the center — will try to find something … in the center," he argues.

But that could lead to "a lot of scrupulously impartial . . . news sources, managed by research-driven executives who find it a good marketing approach."

Ultimately, says Sauter, "banality will trump opinion."

I'd love to see this on billboards everywhere.

The leftists at the LA Slimes probably just assumed that this guy would write a glowing puff piece on Ratherbiased and SeeBS, so they didn't even bother to read the editorial before they printed it.

The Rathergate story has been percolating through the net. Google News has listed thousands of stories over the last few days.

I wonder if the boys at Blackrock are aware of how seriously they have screwed themselves, or do they all live in a state of denial as, I imagine, Rather must.

This is very interesting. In addition to VGS coming out and speaking against Blather, the report aftermath is becoming a week-long story, rather than a one day/one shot story.

This says to me (former CBS TV reporter) that we have not heard the last of this, by a long shot.

VGS will be talk of newsroom today and tomorrow, which will "give permission" to some else to talk, which will.......

Now he knows how normal people feel.

You know, several years ago--probably the mid-1980s--there was a book that came out, Black Days at Black Rock, in which the writer, who had worked for CBS News, mentioned von Sauter quite often in those pages.....but most importantly, wrote much about the tactics and techniques of Dan Rather.

After reading that book, I was sure that both Dan Rather and CBS News would take a hit, self-destruct, although of course I had no idea it would happen as it did.

Twenty years ago, one could have figured out that Dan Rather was going to trip over his own feet.

Yes: Mr. Sauiter we are all going to Fox and even at that I am not happy. Fox could use a booster shot of Conservatism too.

That's what I said on another thread. The silver lining to Blather staying at Black Rock is that you've got 4 out-of-work disgronified ex-CBS flunkies out in the cold; surely at least one of them is ready to flip by going on Hannity or O'Really.

I've seen this guy many times mostly on Scarbourough but I can't believe he came from CBS. He is intelligent, speaks the truth and is extremely knowledgeable about the way CBS has gone bonkers.....he lives in Idaho now which tells me he is more in line with Red than Blue.

I actually think Heyward needs to go even before Blather. He was in charge of this whole debacle. He actually gave orders to recheck all this crap and was ignored. Either he is blind, dogmatic or irrelevant.....either way, not the guy who should be running the show......

"A large swath of the society doesn't trust the news media," he contended. "And for many, it's even stronger than that: They abhor the media and perceive it as an escalating threat to the society."

Bring him back. He gets it.

When the MSM devotes itselfs to an anti-American agenda, than seeks to deceive the American people as an 'objective' carrier of the news on behalf of the people carrying forth that agenda (DNC, U.N.), I consider them to be a threat to American society and will instinctively react accordingly.

Though, I must say, based on comments like this, "The unremitting liberal orientation finally became too much for me.", he sounds like a conservative. Was he a conservative in the '80's when he was President, or did he become so after the fact?
