So here I was - taking my daughter to school this morning (She is a high school sophomore) and she was telling me of a discussion she and the other kids were having about Black History Month.

One kid suggested that - to be fair - there should be a White History Month. He was quickly chastised; "Whites don't deserve a special history month due to the racial prejudices they've committed over the years". My daughter related some of the "Rosa Parks" types of incidents as evidence of why there should be no White History Month.

It was early. I was driving and had not yet had my first cup of coffee. And so I was speechless.

Did I understand correctly... did YOUR daughter say there should be no White History Month?

First, there should not be a Black, White, or Purple History Month.

Second, this sophomore needs to be better educated at home. It sounds like the liberal revisionist public school teachers are giving her all her information. She needs stronger education at home, with emphasis on the truth.

Ask her what “racism” or, even better, “discrimination” means. When she says (I assume) that essentially it is treating someone on the basis of the color of their skin, ask her what is the defining feature of “black history month.” She'll probably protest and say “that's different.” Then ask her about Japanese and Italian internment during WWII, plus the racial laws preventing Asian and Southern European immigration, and ask whether we should have Japanese History Month, or Italian History Month. She'll probably go to slavery

That raises a very interesting issue, fb. If only Blacks deserve their own month because only Blacks suffered slavery, then why is it that affirmative action automatically applies to everyone who isn't a heterosexual white male? Were white women slaves? Were white male homosexuals slaves?

Actually, I wouldn't mind affirmative action if it were still a unique program for the benefit of the one people who had the unique experience of slavery, but it isn't. Right now aliens from Outer Gazebo could land and, so long as they weren't white male heterosexuals, be automatically qualified for affirmative action based on their "otherness."

I would have told her that we should not judge based on skin color and that Obama’s election proved that racism is all but dead in this country. I would have also warned her against siding with those who practice reverse racism, they are even worse than racists in the past. They aren’t ignorant just hateful.

There really is no need for a white history “month”.

Since there are 12 months in a year, having one in which blacks celebrate all of their achievements and contributions to mankind is appropriate.

The other 11 months are a quiet testament to the multitude of advances and progress mankind has made thanks to the influence of whites and others.

my son attends Gonzaga College HS, a Catholic all boys HS in DC. he told me a few weeks ago that the black student association brought a black minister in as an assembly for black history month. everyone was required to attend. he said the guy basically had some blame whitey rhetoric and that he draped an obama tshirt over the podium at the beginning of his talk. my son was OUTRAGED by the entire thing. i asked him if anyone else thought it was inappropriate. he said no, they don't know any better. sounds like your daughter woudl have been ok with it also.

My first issue would have been with the school board and the teachers union for promoting hate comments in the class room that my tax dollars were paying for. Then my lawyer would have been called to sue the school system for teaching hate based indoctrination and would request the immediate removal of and barring from ever teaching again the principal, teacher, superintendent of the school district and any other person involved in this type of cult programming. Until they are forced to defend their actions and ideals with facts they will continue to wreck this country one mind at a time.

I would've responded with a question:

Name one living "white" person who committed those prejudices or injustices or atrocities of the past? (I'm not talking about someone born since FDR.)

And...

Isn't having a "black history month" reverse discrimination? If discrimination is wrong against noe race or religion, it's wrong against any other race or religion.

My biggest question would've been:

Isn't voting as one huge block for one party the worst kind of discrimination? Aren't the larger ethnic groups being disenfranchised by one group of people, namely blacks?

When one group votes 90-95% for one party, they are using the worst kind of discrimination available, though legal.

Somebody ought to explain to that one student the following:

If whites vote in approximate equal numbers for democrats and republicans, and then blacks vote 90-95% for democrats, then it is the black vote which is essentially deciding the vote, and if they continue voting in that range for many election cycles, then it is the blacks who are wielding disproportionate power in relation to their numbers in the general population.

Essentially, what we have had in the last few election cycles is the disenfranchisement of the majority by a minority. Some might call it a dictatorship by a minority.

I am curious, A white South African, whose family lived in South Africa for 3 centuries, is an African-American by definition, yet they are denied that description by the schools, and government agencies.

By the conventional definition Barack Obama barely qualifies. But he subscribes to the "right" positions.

Don't allow yourself to be pulled into a battle on terrain of their choosing. Always battle on terrain that is advantageous to you.

Tell your daughter that what is happening is cultural and not racial.

People make an individual choice of how they want to interact with the world, and this is completely independent of race. You can choose to be a positive person. A person who is cheerful, helpful, respectful, and has manners.

You can also be a negative person. A person who is surly, indifferent, disrespectful, and vulgar.

You will find that people that fit into the first category tend to have more friends and do better in life. The people in the latter category do not.

So who's fault is it if a noticeable subset of any specific group chooses, of their own free will, to behave in a way that is detrimental to their own best interests?

It's not about race people, it's about behavior. I know many people who are a PITA. I avoid them whenever possible, and they come in all colors.
