Is this the beginning of another Cold War?

Suddenly within the past month, it feels like we’re returning to the Cold War. It’s obvious that the Russians are quite annoyed by the attempts of the U.S. deploying a missile shield in Eastern Europe — the former backyard of the Russians.

The Czech Republic, a former Cold War ally of Russia, signed an agreement to deploy U.S. radar stations south of Prague. These radar installations are to be incorporated in the future with interceptor missile systems based in Poland — another former Cold War ally of Russia. The deployment of a U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe is striking the nerve of Russia. And my guess, it’s ticking Putin off!

Let’s not forget that Putin was the former head of the KGB, and though he’s supposedly not running the “show” — it’s quite obvious he’s still the major player in Russia. So what’s the Russian response to these moves by the United States?

On June 26th, the Washington Times reported that Russian bombers are increasing their provocative bomber flights near the Alaskan coastline designed to rattle U.S. Air Defense. Let’s not forget last year, the Russians buzzed an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Nimitz, in the Pacific.

The Washington Post reported yesterday, “Russian bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons could be deployed to Cuba in response to U.S. plans to install a missile defense system in Eastern Europe.” - Source: Washington Post

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader, after pushing Exxon-Mobil out of Venezuela in February, signed oil agreements with Russia’s oil companies: Gazprom, Lukoil and TNK-BP. In addition to these agreements, he signed agreements allowing the Venezuelans to purchase $2 billion in weapons from the Russians.

After their toes were stepped on in the Eastern hemisphere, they’re returning the favor in the Western hemisphere as the saber rattles in Alaska, Cuba, and Venezuela. Just when you thought the Russian bear was dead a few years ago — today we see it sharpening its claws!

The Russian Bear will be a Moslem Bear in a few years and with nuclear claws on its Moslem sensibilities. ‘Jihad’ will have a whole new meaning.

the facts point to the real danger and that is from Saudi Arabia which the US supports through oil and weapons billions!

Former CIA director James Woolsey described the Saudi-sponsored Wahhabism and Islamist extremism as “the soil in which Al-Qaeda and its sister terrorist organizations are flourishing.”

And one more thing: try to differentiate between Soviet and Russian. Please try to remember that the Russian Orthodox people suffered under the SOVIET COMMMUNIST DOMINATION more than any other people. Most of the brutes that inflicted the Soviet Marxist Leninist Communist system on Russian were NOT Russian ethnics. And they were certainly not Christian.

Russia’s military is no where near as strong as it was back during the old Soviet days. I’m not worried about the Russian bluster and the T-95 flights. Bombers in Cuba would be target practice for the F-22 squadrons down in Florida.

I'm curious about your comment. My feeling is that Ronald Reagan was instrumental in causing the Soviet Empire to break apart. Good news for all, in my opinion. Afterwards, we got the new Russian state which, it seems to me, still retains a lot of power and a strong imperialist urge.

I think Russia today is probably less communist than the Soviet Union was 20 years ago, but in terms of power politics, I think the Russian threat is not much different than the Soviet threat.

Do you see this differently?

OF course I do. Instead of cultivating Russia after its horror show under the Soviet Commies we send left wing zombies during Clinton’s regime and undermine its fledgling market economy and then we shove her around during the Bush era.

I guess we would rather do “business” with the Chicoms and Saudis.

You know as well as I do that Nationality means nothing to ideologists whether Marxists or international corporatists. The German Kaiser was probably more responsible for the destruction of Russia than any other entity.

Marxists see nationality or ethnicity and religion as something to be destroyed or at least tightly controlled. All I know is the fact of Bolshevism resulting in the mass murder of Christians, mainly Russians.

Well, I don't like our close relationship with China or the Saudis (too weighted in their favors) -- but a close relationship with Putin never seemed like such a good idea either.

I don't mean to let George W. Bush off the hook too easily, but it seems to me that the Clinton adminsitration should have done a lot more to get Russia moving in the right direction. Now it seems a bit too late.

Since the USA and USSR are the two biggest gun slingers around, it is only fitting that we are on the holster around each other.

But they are not the enemy, nor do I think they see us as such either.

I do not think it is too late to turn this around. What we are doing makes no sense.

Putin is right. Why install a (what we are told) is a missile defense system in Poland and Czec. to defend possible north korea and Iranian attacks when we can install the system in Azerbaijan (lots closer to the rogue states) as Putin has said?

He has said that he would drop Russia’s objections if part of the system were installed in Azerbaijan.

I guess it depends on whether you are shooting at missiles in the 'boost-phase', 'mid-course', or 'terminal-phase' -- which in turn depends on the design of your ABM system.

Then you have NATO politics to consider, and Russia obviously is not a member.

So Putin is still running the show over there ?

The Chekists are just looking for excuses to arm Chavez.

++++++++++++++++
Probably, only this time Russians have enough cash to win.
It is likely that the U.S. will go broke this time. Also this time we’re actually in the process of destroying ourselves from within.

Problem is is that the Soviet Commies still run things in Russia, they just took new political names.
