Crime in Chicago has been in the news lately, but it is nothing new. Historically it dates back over a hundred years. From the tale of the Gray Wolves

The 1890s Chicago City Council was notorious for corrupt political practices orchestrated by a faction of its aldermen known as the Gray Wolves. So named because they were viewed as preying upon the defenseless public, the Gray Wolves were led by First Ward aldermen “Bathhouse” John Coughlin and “Hinky Dink” Mike Kenna, and Johnny Powers of the Nineteenth Ward. These elected officials were not only skilled at trading votes for favors, but once in office they excelled in making municipal decisions to profit themselves financially.
TO the present, it is a compelling historical subject.

To those outside legal circles, Sidley Austin is probably best known as the Chicago law firm where Barack Obama and Michelle Obama met.
The future president was an intern in 1989. The future first lady was an associate. Barack Obama turned down a job offer at the end of his internship, Michelle Obama left the firm, and the two married in 1992. wo decades later, Sidley Austin is faring well under the Obama administration.

Current and former attorneys at the firm receiving presidential appointments include:
Virginia A. Seitz - Seitz was a partner at Sidley Austin before being named assistant attorney general in 2011.
Gary Scott Feinerman - A former solicitor general of Illinois and clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, Feinerman is now a federal judge with the District Court of the Northern District of Illinois.
David B. Barlow - A partner at the firm from 2006 to 2010, Barlow is now U.S. attorney for the Utah district.
John G. Levi - A current partner and a bundler for the Obama 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, Levi chairs the Legal Services Corporation, a governmental corporation that funds legal aid for the poor.
Christopher P. Lu - After working as a litigation associate at Sidley Austin, Lu moved to government. He was legislative director to then-Sen. Barack Obama and is now the president’s cabinet secretary.
Kathryn B. Thomson - Thomson, who is married to Lu, worked for 19 years at Sidley Austin. She became counselor to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in 2009, and was appointed chief counsel of the Federal Aviation Administration in 2012.
Michael Strautmanis - Like Lu, Strautmanis worked with Obama before 2009. He was chief counsel and deputy chief of staff during Obama’s stint in the Senate. He previously practiced complex litigation and employment law at Sidley Austin. (((Strautmatis: VJarrett’s deputy+)))
Newton Minow, senior counsel at the law firm and chairman of the Federal Communications Commission during the Kennedy administration, has multiple connections to the White House. Minow met Barack Obama through his daughter Martha, who was Obama’s professor. She urged her father to hire the young law student.
As president, Obama appointed Martha Minow, now dean of Harvard Law School, to the Legal Services Corporation. He named another Minow daughter, Mary, to the National Museum Library Services Board.
Sidley Austin has been embraced by Washington in more ways than federal appointments.
The firm has landed federal contracts totalling nearly $12 million since 2009.
In the prior four years, during the George W. Bush administration, the firm’s federal contracts totaled $1.4 million, according to data on USASpending.gov.
Sidley Austin also lobbies for clients with big stakes in Washington, including the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, Bayer HealthCare and Grifols, a global healthcare company. In 2011, the firm had 21 registered lobbyists in the capital and pulled in nearly $3 million in lobby fees.
Not surprisingly, political contributions from people at Sidley Austin lean toward the Obama camp.
Elections data analyzed by the Center for Responsive Politics show that Sidley Austin employees had given $243,486 to Obama’s re-election bid through late April. Employees gave less than $23,000 to Mitt Romney’s campaign.
Levi isn’t the only Obama bundler at the firm. Partner Thomas Cole raised money for the 2008 campaign.
Nevertheless, Sidley Austin is not an all-Obama, all-the-time law firm. Partner Charles Douglas raised funds for John McCain in 2008. This time around, he has contributed to both Romney and Tim Pawlenty.
Bill Daley was for a time on the board of directors of SBC Comm. Which became AT&T later. The web of corruption in IL is really inbred. It will take the army to fix it. It will take more than an Eliot Ness or a Pat Fitzgerald. It would be easier to kick cook county out of IL and goodluck with that.

Chicago drug sales: fueled by Mexican cartels?

November, the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration arrested 12 people in Chicago and charged them with drug trafficking.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said then that the charges were part of the first federal prosecution in Chicago of defendants with ties to the Zetas, one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels - and an extremely violent one.
According to federal reports, the Chicago region is one of the nation’s largest drug markets and a distribution center for illicit drugs.
The feds and local cops know that gangs are increasingly involved in the retail sale of illegal narcotics across Illinois. And gangs have only one source to get drugs for resale: the Mexican cartels.
The feds say the Mexican drug cartels operate in more than 2,500 cities across the country. In Chicago, they have contact with high-level members of the Gangster Disciples, the Vice Lords and the Latin Kings, supplying them with drugs for street distribution, according to federal agencies.
Most homicides committed in Chicago are gang-related and many are the result of rival gangs fighting for turf to sell drugs.
You need only to connect the dots.
The arrest of people with alleged ties to the Zetas is very worrisome. The Zetas, formed by former members of an elite Mexican army unit, are behind some of the most gruesome violence in the Mexican drug war, a conflict that has claimed an estimated 60,000 lives since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched an all-out war against the cartels five and half years ago.
The Zetas also are capable of launching sophisticated operations, not only in Mexico but the United States.
This week, federal authorities announced they have cracked a race horse-breeding scheme on this side of the border that allowed Mexican nationals with ties to the Zetas to launder millions of dollars in drug money.
Sylvia Longmire, a retired Air Force captain and former special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, told me that Mexican drug cartels operatives live and work in the United States without calling too much attention to themselves.
“The last thing they want is to arouse the ire of the U.S. authorities by committing the kind of violence we see in Mexico,” said Longmire, author of the book Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico’s Drug Wars.
Longmire said that there have been killings related to Mexican drug-trafficking groups on the Southwest border. And she pointed out that the potential for cartel-style vicious violence in the streets of American cities is very real because the cartels need to keep the business going “and they are being crunched by Mexican and U.S. law enforcement agencies

Burn Down the Suburbs?

President Obama is not a fan of America’s suburbs. Indeed, he intends to abolish them. With suburban voters set to be the swing constituency of the 2012 election, the administration’s plans for this segment of the electorate deserve scrutiny. Obama is a longtime supporter of “regionalism,” the idea that the suburbs should be folded into the cities, merging schools, housing, transportation, and above all taxation. To this end, the president has already put programs in place designed to push the country toward a sweeping social transformation in a possible second term. The goal: income equalization via a massive redistribution of suburban tax money to the cities.
Obama’s plans to undercut the political and economic independence of America’s suburbs reach back decades. The community organizers who trained him in the mid-1980s blamed the plight of cities on taxpayer “flight” to suburbia. Beginning in the mid-1990s, Obama’s mentors at the Gamaliel Foundation (a community-organizing network Obama helped found) formally dedicated their efforts to the budding fight against suburban “sprawl.” From his positions on the boards of a couple of left-leaning Chicago foundations, Obama channeled substantial financial support to these efforts. On entering politics, he served as a dedicated ally of his mentors’ anti-suburban activism.
The alliance endures. One of Obama’s original trainers, Mike Kruglik, has hived off a new organization called Building One America, which continues Gamaliel’s anti-suburban crusade under another name. Kruglik and his close allies, David Rusk and Myron Orfield, intellectual leaders of the “anti-sprawl” movement, have been quietly working with the Obama administration for years on an ambitious program of social reform.
In July of 2011, Kruglik’s Building One America held a conference at the White House. Orfield and Rusk made presentations, and afterwards Kruglik personally met with the president in the Oval Office. The ultimate goal of the movement led by Kruglik, Rusk, and Orfield is quite literally to abolish the suburbs. Knowing that this could never happen through outright annexation by nearby cities, they’ve developed ways to coax suburbs to slowly forfeit their independence.
One approach is to force suburban residents into densely packed cities by blocking development on the outskirts of metropolitan areas, and by discouraging driving with a blizzard of taxes, fees, and regulations. Step two is to move the poor out of cities by imposing low-income-housing quotas on development in middle-class suburbs. Step three is to export the controversial “regional tax-base sharing” scheme currently in place in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area to the rest of the country. Under this program, a portion of suburban tax money flows into a common regional pot, which is then effectively redistributed to urban, and a few less well-off “inner-ring” suburban, municipalities.
The Obama administration, stocked with “regionalist” appointees, has been advancing this ambitious plan quietly for the past four years. Efforts to discourage driving and to press development into densely packed cities are justified by reference to fears of global warming. Leaders of the crusade against “sprawl” very consciously use environmental concerns as a cover for their redistributive schemes.
The centerpiece of the Obama administration’s anti-suburban plans is a little-known and seemingly modest program called the Sustainable Communities Initiative. The “regional planning grants” funded under this initiative — many of them in battleground states like Florida, Virginia, and Ohio — are set to recommend redistributive policies, as well as transportation and development plans, designed to undercut America’s suburbs. Few have noticed this because the program’s goals are muffled in the impenetrable jargon of “sustainability,” while its recommendations are to be unveiled only in a possible second Obama term.
Obama’s former community-organizing mentors and colleagues want the administration to condition future federal aid on state adherence to the recommendations served up by these anti-suburban planning commissions. That would quickly turn an apparently modest set of regional-planning grants into a lever for sweeping social change.
In light of Obama’s unbroken history of collaboration with his organizing mentors on this anti-suburban project, and his proven willingness to impose ambitious policy agendas on the country through heavy-handed regulation, this project seems likely to advance.
A second and equally ambitious facet of Obama’s anti-suburban blueprint involves the work of Kruglik’s Building One America. Traditionally, Alinskyite community organizers mobilize leftist church groups. Kruglik’s group goes a step further by organizing not only the religious left but politicians from relatively less-well-off inner-ring suburbs. The goal is to build coalitions between urban and inner-ring suburban state legislators, in a bid to force regional tax-base sharing on middle-class suburbanites. That is how the practice came to Minnesota.
The July 2011 White House conference, gathering inner-ring suburban politicians for presentations by Rusk and Orfield, was an effort to place the prestige of the Obama administration behind Kruglik’s organizing efforts. A multi-state battle over regional tax-base “sharing,” abetted by the president, would usher in divisive class warfare on a scale likely to dwarf the puny efforts of Occupy Wall Street.
Obama’s little-known plans to undermine the political and economic autonomy of America’s suburbs constitute a policy initiative similar in ambition to health-care reform, the stimulus, or “cap-and-trade.” Obama’s anti-suburban plans also supply the missing link that explains his administration’s overall policy architecture.
Since the failure of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty and the collapse of federal urban policy, leftist theorists of community organizing have advocated a series of moves designed to quietly redistribute tax money to the cities. Health-care reform and federal infrastructure spending (as in the stimulus) are backed by organizers as the best ways to reconstitute an urban policy without directly calling it that. A campaign against suburban “sprawl” under the guise of environmentalism is the next move. Open calls for suburban tax-base “sharing” are the final and most controversial link in the chain of a reconstituted and redistributive urban policy. President Obama is following this plan.
Middle-class suburban supporters of the president take note. It isn’t just the pocketbooks of the “1 percent” he’s after; it’s yours.

Ok, so who was Frank Marshall Davis?
Kengor: Frank Marshall Davis, Communist Party USA (CPUSA) number 47544, was a 20th century American who wrote pro-Soviet propaganda in newspaper columns and was a loyal Soviet patriot.
FP: What do you mean by “loyal Soviet patriot?”
Kengor: While it will shock naïve liberals who still don’t grasp the horrors of communism, readers of FrontPage will understand. Leftist Americans who took the extraordinary step of joining CPUSA swore a loyalty oath to the USSR—Stalin’s USSR in the case of Frank Marshall Davis.
The oath stated: “I pledge myself to rally the masses to defend the Soviet Union, the land of victorious socialism. I pledge myself to remain at all times a vigilant and firm defender of the Leninist line of the Party, the only line that insures the triumph of Soviet Power in the United States.”
FP: When did Frank Marshall Davis join the Communist Party?
Kengor: Remarkably, he joined early in World War II, after the Hitler-Stalin Pact—a period when many Party members bolted the Party because they were outraged at Stalin signing that pact with Hitler. That pact, of course, precipitated the invasion of Poland and World War II. Jewish American communists in particular were aghast. The man in Moscow to whom they swore their unwavering allegiance had helped pave the way for the Holocaust.
I must note that it was also through this group that Davis would work with Robert Taylor, who just happened to be the grandfather of Valerie Jarrett.
FP: That’s remarkable. Valerie Jarrett today is Obama’s right-hand woman in the White House.
Kengor: Yes, and it’s even more eerie than that. Frank Marshall Davis, Obama’s mentor, also worked with Vernon Jarrett in these circles.
Vernon Jarrett was Valerie’s father-in-law. And it’s worse still. Davis, Obama’s mentor, also worked with Harry and David Canter, two other Chicago communists. The Canters mentored a young man named David Axelrod in Chicago in the 1970s.
SO, THE TROIKA THAT’S ARGUABLY RUNNING AMERICA TODAY—OBAMA AND VALERIE JARRETT AND DAVID AXELROD—ALL HAVE COMMON BONDS IN CHICAGO’S COMMUNIST CIRCLES FROM THE 1940S. THEIR MENTORS KNEW EACH OTHER. (Emphasis Added)

FP: Are there other people that Frank Marshall Davis worked with in Chicago who have relevance today?
Kengor: Oh, yes, I could go on and on. At the Chicago Star, the communist newspaper for which he wrote and was the founding editor-in-chief (1946-48), Davis regularly shared the op-ed page with Senator Claude “Red” Pepper, who at that exact time was writing the bill to nationalize healthcare in the United States—which Davis himself advocated in his columns. By the way, Pepper’s chief of staff, who wrote that bill, was Charles Kramer, who we now know was working for the KGB under the codename “mole.”
Another Davis comrade at the Star was William Patterson, who actually mentored Frank Marshall Davis and was probably more important than any other figure in bringing Davis into the Party.
FP: William Patterson was a hardcore communist.
Kengor: Yes, and among his legacies is the Kremlin’s “People’s Friendship University,” which he helped plan in the 1960s. People’s Friendship University became better known as the “Patrice Lumumba Friendship University,” a Kremlin grooming school for third-world revolutionaries.
This university, the third largest in the USSR, schooled some of the world’s leading terrorists. Distinguished alumni include Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (You know, Obama’s Palestinian Authority’s “PEACE PARTNER?”
Among this band of rogues, Mohamed Boudia was a top figure in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), one of the cores branches of the PLO. He was in charge of PFLP terrorist operations in Europe, placed there by the KGB, where he worked with Soviet-backed terror cells in East Berlin.
There he also worked with the Black September Organization. Among Boudia’s most dastardly acts—WHICH INVOLVED MAHMOUD ABBAS—was the brutal murder of Jewish Olympians in the 1972 Munich massacre.
(Abbas—like his predecessor Yasser Arafat—a “Terrorists? Who would have thunk it?)
FP: So, Patterson helped mentor Frank Marshall Davis, who, in turn, mentored Obama?
Kengor: Correct.
FP: In your book, you say that Davis’s first major Party job was editing and writing columns for the Chicago Star in the late 1940s. You found a lot of similarity in what Davis was writing and what Obama says today.
Kengor: Yes. Davis constantly bashed Wall Street, big oil, profits, GOP tax cuts, the wealthy and “millionaires.” He called for taxpayer funding of “universal healthcare” and “public works projects.” He targeted General Motors. He championed Russian foreign policy, especially at the expense of countries like Poland. I could go on and on. The similarities are chilling.
FP: Was there a particular Davis column that really struck you?
Kengor: Yes, and I use it to open the book. In a November 1946 column, Davis wrote: “I’m tired of being beaned with those double meaning words like ‘sacred institutions’ and ‘the American way of life’ which our flag-waving fascists and lukewarm liberals hurl at us day and night.”
This struck me because it’s so similar to Obama’s quoting of Davis in Dreams from My Father. There, Obama quoted Davis saying: “They’ll train you so good, you’ll start believing what they tell you about equal opportunity and the American way and all that sh-t.”
FP: Okay, when did Obama meet Davis?
Kengor: According to an eyewitness, they were first introduced in 1970. It was Obama’s grandfather, Stanley Dunham, who made the introduction. Dunham, himself a leftist, saw in Davis a potential role model and black father figure that Obama was lacking. Davis knew and influenced Obama throughout Obama’s adolescence in the 1970s, right up until he went to college. In fact, those disparaging words about the American way were Davis’s parting words to Obama before Obama headed off to Occidental College.
FP: You interview someone who knew Obama at Occidental and says that Obama was an actual communist at Occidental.
Kengor: That’s right. The person is Dr. John Drew, who I’ve interviewed at length and remain in regular contact with today. He’s totally credible, no axe to grind, no story to sell. Drew contacted me because he knew I was researching Davis. Drew sees himself as the “missing link” between Obama’s time with Frank Marshall Davis and with later radicals like Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Drew himself was a Marxist at the time, and Obama was introduced to him as a fellow Marxist—as “one of us.” Drew told me about Obama’s belief in what Drew described as the “Frank Marshall Davis fantasy of revolution.” Drew, who was a more realistic, chastened Marxist, WAS STUNNED AT OBAMA’S UNWAVERING BELIEF IN THE IMMINENCE OF A MARXIST REVOLUTION IN THE UNITED STATES. FP: Was Davis a national-security threat? Kengor: The federal government thought so. In the book, I present documents from Davis’s 600-page FBI file in which the FBI repeatedly re-certifies Davis on the Security Index. That’s a very serious thing. It means that, in the event of a war breaking out between the US and USSR, Obama’s mentor could have been placed under immediate arrest.
Needless to say, that’s quite unprecedented for a presidential mentor. With a mentor like that, Barack Obama should have trouble getting a security clearance for a standard, entry-level government job. Instead, Americans elected him right into the Oval Office.
FP: Incredible, that is really something. Paul Kengor, how would you crystallize the main message/thesis of your book? Kengor: Mentors matter. Any study of any president starts with mentors. We all know that. And yet, why have we ignored this mentor to this particular president? Well, the answer is clear from my book:
Because no president in all of American history has ever had a mentor as radical as Frank Marshall Davis. No president—ever—has had a mentor who was a literal card-carrying member of the Communist Party.

The reason Mr. Obama need worry is that the contract at issue, $50 million for an Illinois-based private security guard enterprise called Companion Security, turns up in Iraqi government court documents in the pursuit of $650 million stolen from the CPA between 2003 and 2006 by Mr. Alsammarae.
“There are lots of names of companies in the States that they used to steal from us,” a Baghdad official with full knowledge of the case says of the four-inch-thick file of court documents that convicted Mr. Alsammarae in October 2006; “and here is Companion.”
The reason Mr. Obama need worry is that Mr. Rezko’s accuser,
Daniel Mahru,
is not only a government witness in this present Rezko trial, but also was the lawyer for the original Companion Security deal and is reported to have pushed another Rezko partner in Companion Security, Daniel T. Frawley, to revive the Companion contract in the spring and summer of 2006 in conversation with both Governor Rod Blagojevich’s office and Senator Barack Obama’s office.
The reason Mr. Obama need worry is that, according to the same court filing, Mr. Mahru has been cooperating with the Federal investigation of Mr. Rezko since December 2005, ten months before Mr. Rezko was indicted.
Mr. Mahru was Mr. Rezko’s partner in the real estate development company Rezmar for 16 years until the two men broke in December 2005. Mr. Mahru then became partners with John Thomas in a troubled Miami real estate deal; and it is well established that Mr. Thomas has been a cooperating federal witness who wore a wire as a mole for the FBI in 2004 and 2005, including in many visits to Mr. Rezko’s offices, where frequent callers included Governor Blagojevich and State Senator Barack Obama. The government states that Mr. Thomas did not record the governor or the state senator.
The reason Mr. Obama need worry is that Mr. Mahru’s accusation means that federal prosecutors were watching what Mr. Rezko was doing – the Rezko-Auchi deal with the 62-acre Chicago site from 2003, the Rezko-Auchi-Alsammarae deal with the CPA Ministry of Electricity plant at Chamchamal, Kurdistan, from 2004, the Rezko-Frawley-Mahru-Alsammarae Companion Security deal from 2005 – while Mr. Rezko was fundraising for Mr. Obama in his successful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and then into Mr. Obama’s first term.
There is no evidence of wrongdoing by Senator Obama, nor none alleged; however, there is an unsavory tale of how the Chicago political machine works for its friends and supporters, stretching from the South Side of Chicago all the way to Baghdad.
There is also now alleged a direct link, the bribe, between Mr. Rezko and Mr. Alsammarae for the Companion Security deal of 2005. This raises questions about the contract that may be difficult to answer for those who became involved in trying to revive the contract in 2006, such as the offices of Governor Rod Blagojevich and Senator Obama.
There are large holes in the narrative, and some inconsistencies. For example, if Mr. Rezko broke with Mr. Mahru in December 2005, does that mean that Mr. Rezko continued to participate in the revival of the Companion Security deal that he had bribed Mr. Alsammarae to obtain?
And did the fact that the protracted communication — between Companion Security’s representative, Daniel T. Frawley, and Senator Obama’s Moline office aide, Seamus Ahern – that was broken off sometime in late 2006 have anything to do with the indictment and arrest of Mr. Rezko in October 2006 or the Baghdad conviction for fraud of Mr. Alsammarae in October 2006?
Governor Blagojevich’s office and Senator Obama’s office both have stated that they did not know of the connections among Companion, Mr. Frawley and Mr. Rezko. But did they know of the connections among Companion, Mr. Frawley and Mr. Mahru, a long-time partner with Mr. Rezko, who was with Mr. Rezko when the alleged bribe was made?
(The bribe was allegedly paid by an escrow account at the esteemed Bryan Cave Law firm, which has a well-established legal practice in the Middle East, including Iraq.)
An additional concern for Senator Obama with regard these tangled criminal allegations against his longtime patron and friend Mr. Rezko, is that while Mr. Rezko is visibly on trial – detained by federal prosecutors as a flight risk since it was revealed that he tried to deceive the court about $3.7 million dollars paid to him by his Rezmar business partner, the London billionaire investor Nadhmi Auchi – is that the alleged recipient of the Companion Security bribe, Aiham Alsammarae, is not available and may be “overseas.”
Mr. Alsammarae’s family told the AP on Tuesday, when the bribe was revealed, that Mr. Alsammarae was overseas and could not be reached for comment. My efforts to reach Mr. Alsammarae for the last week through his Chicago engineering firm, KCI Engineering Consultants, have not been successful either.
Messages left on Mr. Alsammarae’s voice mail as recently as Wednesday have not been returned; the mobile phone number Mr. Alsammarae’s message gives in his excellent English is disconnected; a paper message left with the receptionist, who said he was away and would return his calls, has not been answered; the receptionist no longer answers in person and calls to her go to her voice mail.
What is most worrisome about Mr. Alsammarae’s absence is that, while he is alleged in a federal court filing in the Northern District of Illinois to have taken a bribe for a U.S. firm’s contract with the Iraqi CPA, he is also a convicted thief in Iraq with a nine year sentence pending, from which he has been a fugitive since December 2006. There exists an Interpol warrant online for his arrest and return to Iraq.
Until Mr. Alsammarae returns to answer questions about his awarding the proven-fraudulent Companion Security contract when he was Minister of Electricity in 2005, this matter will hang over the opinions and perhaps fates of Mr. Rezko, Mr. Mahru, Governor Blagojevich, and Senator Obama.
Mr. Alsammarae has information vital to clearing the suspicions, or deepening them, about Chicago political actors involved in a presidential campaign.

Searching old newspapers is one of my favorite pastimes, and I have tried to use them many times to shed light on current events — or to inform readers about how the past is prologue to our very interesting present-day quandaries.
Recently, I came across a syndicated column from November 1979 that seemed to point 30 years into the future toward an obscure campaign issue that arose briefly in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Thomas Ayers also happened to have major influence over the Woods Fuoundation and who hired Obama, the Woods Fund.
Enough for the moment, but the one liking between Thomas Ayers and Bill Ayers was Obama, a Black man (that Thomas Ayers enjoyed promoting) and a marxist (that Bill Ayers thrived from) with a common seed being Frank Marshall Davis, a friend of Chicago foundations and radical reformers and marxists!
Obama is the package deal that the Ayers could never pass up to do their biddings on every level and in return, the Ayers gave Obama the tools and political clout to do it!
When Bill Ayres hit the headlines as a radical bomber a year or two later I still didn't put two and two together to realize that buried somewhere in our subscription list was the name of a local who was Daddy-O to the bomber.
It was much later, with the rise of Barack Obama, that I realized the connection between Obama's pal, Bill Ayers and our subscriber, Thomas Ayers.
I have never been able to dope out if Thomas Ayres was interested in subscribing to a firmly-right newsletter because he was a genuine conservative living in a posh neighborhood in an affluent, Republican suburb of Chicago near where I lived......or if he was actually a covert hard-core radical himself.
As head of a vast electric utilities company that personified capitalism and conservatism at the time, it's hard to decipher what side he was on, and how much he supported his son's radicalism, if he did at all.
Too late to find out now, Thomas Ayers lights went out permanently in 2007.
