DeMint Once Backed Mandate He Now Blasts As “Unconstitutional”

DeMint recently denounced the mandate in the Senate bill as follows:

Not only is an individual mandate unconstitutional, but it will increase premiums for hard-working Americans — further making insurance coverage unaffordable — and will force more people onto government-run programs.

But during the presidential primaries, DeMint endorsed the health care plan Romney developed as Governor of Massachusetts, calling it “innovative” and claiming he supported Romney because he “believes all Americans should have a health plan that they can afford, own and keep.” __________________________________

I'll say a few things here knowing that I'll get hounded by readers but I have a question that I want some thoughts on, not just sarcastic responses with funny pictures. ;)

DeMint backed Romney in 2008. I haven't found anything from him (though I could be definitely wrong on this one and please tell me if I am) distancing himself from Mitt. If so, and this is the time that he could easily do that, I think he'll back him in 2012.

From what I've gathered working at GOP HQs in my part of the country (eastern North Carolina), Mitt is more liked by the Tea Party movement in general than Free Republic users. I think he has a better shot than we believe, especially is we get a series of more conservative candidates splitting the vote (like if Gingrich, Palin and Huckabee all run).

It seems like we've made up our mind on Mitt but it isn't really in line with some of the heros we've created.

Case in point: I was at a county HQ site the other day and talked about Obamacare with the volunteer. She pulled out stuff from the Heritage Foundation on Obamacare and when we got on to a 2012 discussion, she expressed reservations about Romneycare. I shared with her that the Heritage Foundation was involved in crafting it, that there are similarities between Romneycare and Hillycare-era Republican proposals and Jim DeMint, a guy we all love, backed Romney and spoke well of his plan in 2008.

She almost instantly softened up. I'm not saying thats what all conservatives will do but I was amazed that it went that direction. Just to finish this story, I told her to keep an eye on Mitch Daniels- he doesn't require much swallowing.

So, where do you stand on Mitt and DeMint?

Keep up the work guys. If anyone else is from NC, there is a tea party in little Washington soon.

“So, where do you stand on Mitt and DeMint?”

Our choices were slim for the 2008 run. McCain proved that. Thompson never took off. Huckabee had a few glimmers. Romney may have been one of the better of that slim field.

I think DeMint runs himself, or on a ticket with Palin. I hope Mitt either doesn’t run or is out early. Too many negatives for the base, starting with the fact that he’s cozy with the GOP establishment. It is not the era to be cozy with the establishment.

It’s time to stand on the US Constitution and run by listening WELL to the people of America - and the base (Conservatives) of the GOP - not the establishment.

There will be no pro-Romney campaign on FR! I’ll ban every pro-Romney poster if I have to.

That’s true. But that only goes so far...

No way is Mitt like by Tea Party people in general...some maybe but not by a majority.

He supported TARP...He believed that there should have been some type of Stimulus just not too much, he push RomneyCare and other RINO’s ways

His time was 2008, but it’s 2010 & 2012 a whole new and different ballgame!

That’s part of what I asked for in the post. I’m not challenging you. I want some current DeMint statements on Mitt; I mentioned that I hadn’t found anything, but if you’re aware of it...please link me to it.

"Our choices were slim for the 2008 run."

That is true, though I still disagree with supporting Mitt. Prior to the Florida Primary I would have agreed that he was preferable to McCain. He then proceeded to attack McCain from the left by airing commercials criticizing McCain's failure to vote on spending bills related to senior citizens and prescription drugs. Still, DeMint is more conservative than just about any other perspective candidate, so my disagreement with him on this one aside, I would gladly support him should he decide to run. Mike Pence would be another one who would get my attention.

I know you didn’t mention him but as part of this larger theme: Do we then say “no” to Thune for his TARP vote?

I’m not backing Romney, I’m saying: Let’s apply to same rules to all GOPers. We have an establishment insider like Dick Armey playing a big role in our outsider movement. We can’t make the mistake of just forgiving the guys we like...that’s how we’ll fail in our mission of restoring conservatism as the standard for the party.
