Global Warming Update: Video Of Metrodome Collapsing
Conservative Refocus ^ | 12/13/10 | Barry Secrest

Fascinating that a structure, which was completed in 1982, has finally succumbed to the harshness of a massive winter snowstorm. Even more fascinating is that this structure that has been around for nearly 30 years finally collapses under the weight of ice and snow during, what is supposed to be, the height of a global warming meltdown.

It has collasped a couple of other times, but I don't know whether it has ever torn this badly.

Whose the Dilbert who thought a balloon was good roofing material in snow country?

The author is ignorant of global warming theory... All things bad are caused by global warming including nasty cold weather.

I guess the designer of that building didn’t want to over engineer the roof on the Metrodome.I guess he wasn’t planning on having it around very long.

What was the snowload design for the structure? I’m sure there was 17 inches in the past. Why wasn’t there something in the design to melt this off??

We had one of those in my town and it collapsed several times in our high winds and rains. The city fathers finally got tired of repairing/replacing it and put a real roof on. I will say it had great light during the daytime though.

We have 3-4” of globull warming in Nashville today. We haven’t had significant accumulation this early in MANY years.

It amazes me that a polycarbonate (or whatever) roof lasted more than a decade in such a region.

I have seen steel truss roofs built to withstand 36” snowfalls collapse while the paint was still drying. Massachusetts in 1979, Liberty Tree Mall.

30 years service was a gift from God.

No shocker, just mother nature bitching off as she tends to.

You are far too modest in your claims about Anthropogenic Global Warming Theory. AGWT explains and predicts all things, both good and bad. AGWT is very robust with respect to data and cannot be refuted: all observations confirm it at the 100% confidence level. The naked casuistry of the high priests of warmism would make a Jesuit blush.

Right on!! AGW enthusiasts have told us that heavier snowfall amounts can be expected because of global warming.
But I believe southern Minnesota (Filmore Co.) has not for a long time experienced snow depths such as I waded through walking to school during the mid-1930s. But I could be in error about that; I moved about 100 miles east into Badgerland in 1940.

I wouldn’t call it a collapse, rather the roof fabric ripped. All the structural elements appear to remain intact. I can’t tell if the structural elements even yielded, but may have remained in the elastic region throughout the high strain rates.

Looking at the video, it sure appeared to me that the structure sagged causing the fabric to rib. In one video, you could see the center scoreboard sagging down before the snow poured onto the field.

Was it a heavy 'wet' snow up in MN?

Please note that it's not the first time it collapsed, It's collapsed four times before under heavy snow.

It's an air-supported structure, so as soon as the first tears occurred, the air-pressure that holds up the roof escapes, and the roof sags. As it sags, instead of being an arch distributing the weight, it becomes a bowl, concentrating the weight, and the roof material tears dumping the snow. They'll probably have to drain the rest of the snow/meltwater out of the dome before they can even begin to work on fixing it.

That makes sense. What does not make sense is building it is a place where you know damn well you are going to get heavy snow loads. I'd assume they have some procedure or requirement for reducing that load before they would allow 60,000 people in there for a football game.
