TASTY TRIVIA -- A Call for suggestions & submissions of favorite bits of triva (vanity)

These are just a few examples to get us started:

The Harlem Globetrotters was the brainchild of promoter-coach Abe Saperstein in the mid- to late-1920s. He thought the name gave them the right amount of appeal, mystique and prestige despite the fact, or perhaps, because of the fact, that he and his original players all came from, Chicago, not New York. And their headquarters was in Chicago too.

Teens who own dogs get more physical exercise than teens who don't.

If you have a bottle or jar top that won't unscrew, just run it under the hot water faucet for a few minutes. The heat will usually make the top expand faster than the jar or bottle, and you'll usually be able to unscrew it without using an adjustable pliers or other opener.

Teddy bears were first made by Morris Michtom, who was inspired by a 1902 cartoon depicting President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt refusing to shoot a tired old bear that had been trapped and tied up for him because it would have been un-sportsmanlike. It was based on an actual hunting trip incident.

Coffee helps you wake up and keep you up because of how the caffeine in it affects your blood sugar level. But if you don't have a little fruit juice first, you may not have enough blood sugar in the first place, and it isn't anywhere near as effective as if you did.

John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman, did not, as many people believe, plant apple trees by tossing seeds hither and yon. He was a philanthropic missionary and businessman who actually started nurseries where sapling apple trees were nurtured until they could be sold to people who wanted to grow their own.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, 2nd and 3rd Presidents respectively, (also 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents respectively) both died on July 4, 1826 -- exactly 50 years to the day after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Although they belonged to opposing parties, they remained fast friends who corresponded regularly until their simultaneous deaths.

23% of the Federal Budget now goes toward interest on the national debt. As the debt continues to explode, so does the percentage that goes toward interest. And Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security now make up almost half the Federal Budget. And the new health care bureaucracies, not yet in place, are estimated to cost a trillion dollars a year more.

Correct again! It was the worst airline accident in history. (Some would say 9/11, but I would argue that was a terrorist attack, not an accident.) Anyway, you are good!

There are SIX state capitals at a longitude WEST of Los Angeles: Honolulu, Juneau, Olympia, Salem, Sacramento and ... and Carson City! The only two state capitals which end in the letter “u” are the farthest west ones (which are also the farthest south one and the farthest north one). One’s a “lulu.” Did juneau that?

The California grizzly bear (Ursus californicus) was designated official State Animal in 1953. The last one was killed in Tulare County in August 1922.

Charles Lindbergh would have been named Charles Manson if his father hadn’t changed the family name.

Latitude and longitude. 180 degrees is the demarcation between the Far West and the Far East. So Alaska is both the eastern most AND western most state. In my college days I won a lot of beer with that one.

No searching. Albert Brooks’ brother is also an actor/writer/director. What is his best known character's stage name? Hint: he played Officer Judy ( and was a writer ) on the “Smothers Brothers” show.

I had to peek. Super Dave Osborne! I would have NEVER gotten that. “Super Bob Einstein” just doesn’t have that same ring to it. Although it would be kind of funny.

JFK issued treasury backed currency, in competition with the Federal Reserve currency in the months prior to his death. This currency bears a red seal, rather than the green Federal Reserve seal.

Napoleon Bonaparte was indirectly responsible for the impressionist movement in painting. During his conquests, Napoleon was among the first military leaders to recognize the importance of "winning the hearts and minds" of the populations he was overrunning. Up until that time, Armies in the field largely sustained themselves by pillaging and foraging food, cattle, horses, etc. from the locals.

Napoleon sought a means of preserving food in order to limit the amount his Army would need to forcibly take from the locals. This effort led to canning, however another option that was examined had been foil tubes. While this was not received as a method of food storage, many painters found it an ideal means of storing oil paints, which heretofore had to be mixed in the studios. Foil tubes allowed artists to cart their canvasses, paints an easels into the landscape initiating the en plen air movement which led to the high point of impressionism.
