A Note To Newt: You Can't Run For President On Cruise Control
Ward World ^ | 06/09/2011 | Kevin A Ward

So, big news in the GOP broke earlier this evening when it was announced that several top campaign employees and consultants for Newt Gingrich's Presidential campaign resigned. The names of those who resigned are not too important as far as I'm concerned because the act of resigning en masse indicates a tragically flawed candidate. The absurdity of this is that former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue who was serving as campaign chair also quit and went on board with former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty's competing bid for the nation's high office. We've never quite seen anything like this before.

This episode ends what was once a meteoric career in politics. Newt Gingrich was once the wonder kid of the GOP,an almost heroic figure having played a defining role in ending a 42 year Democratic rule of the House of Representatives. I recall at the time so many people saying they never thought they'd see that day in their natural lives. It was that big a deal.

Newt Gingrich for all his faults and his many enemies had earned the grudging respect of all. He was the "idea guy". He had an almost innate political instinct and had strategic understanding of issues and could employ his knowledge tactically. A rare combination in politics. It used to be a lethal combination.

I've also admired Gingrich because he's a "history guy". So am I. As such I always felt something kindred in his analysis of current events with definitive historical insights. Few were as deft as he was in this regards. But for these qualities I admired, Newt Gingrich as a public figure never embraced the axiom that "repetition is the soul of wit". In short Gingrich never likes to repeat himself. So he crafted varying responses to the same repetitive inquiries. He rejected the tedium that must be embraced to a degree to further yourself in public life. By rejecting repetition he increased the risk of putting his foot in his mouth as we have often seen.

I thought Newt Gingrich might be a true dark horse in this race.I really did. I was looking forward to him in the debates. I felt he could've provided form and substance in driving and framing those debates. I was wrong and it saddens me that his public life will end with a whimper, but a whimper it is.

Four years ago like many conservatives I was excited when Fred Thompson announced he was running for President. I thought it was a game changer. Many would suggest I was embracing a false narrative, but I felt like Thompson did not have the fire in his belly. In any case he didn't get as far as the Florida primary anyway. Now I find out that one week before the CNN debate and after skipping the South Carolina debate that he was on a cruise with his wife. That's right! A CRUISE. I sure hoped they got their fair share of jumbo shrimp at the buffet.   If you want my vote then you campaign for the job. You don't go on the cruise. You sure don't ask your faithful staff members to keep plugging away while you sip on a rum runner. His staff quit because his actions didn't meet his words. His commitment wasn't worthy of the hard work of others.Next time Newt, just write another book and spare us your half assed, uninspiring and downright lazy campaigning. Ideas aren't the only thing that matters. You have to earn a vote by deeds that are inspired by higher ideals. I would've liked to have voted for you. It's a shame you never bothered to ask. Enjoy the cruise.I sure hope you enjoy the sunset.

A note to everyone. I have my own issues with Newt and have debated on many issues with his now former spokesman in private e-mails. The worst of which was during the NY 23rd special and the Scozofave (sp) debacle. Rick has been with the Speaker for a long time and to see him go now is far more interesting than just a spat about a cruise.

I would have not voted in a primary for Newt for any reason other than he was running against Romney and I had only those two choices, but there is far more to this story than just a stupid cruise 18 months out.

“A Note To Newt: You Can’t Run For President.”

But Newt can “run” to Tiffany’s and more cruises.

What you said.

Gingrich will fool around and try to dazzle us with genius, his disparate ideas would have the US in 1000 goose chases and he just doesn’t have the energy to kick any doors down since now it seems to be more about his promoting Calista than America.

In fairness to Gingrich (whom I really don't like politically) what kind of trustworthy people are these who would sabotage his campaign in the manner they did? They didn't exactly resign quietly.

I wonder after seeing their actions, why would someone else be so willing to hire them?

Hey, I was always a Newt fan but when he was apparently befuddled by a second-rate Leftwingtard TV interviewer with one of George Soros' trick questions I knew he wasn't going to be running for President very long.

And, it turns out, he wasn't, and didn't, and finally the smart guys figured out something I knew weeks ago.

The root cause of the problem is Newt is still thinking of the issues in terms of what they were back in the early and mid 1990s. It's 15 years later and you can't just roll back into the genba of political competition without boning up on the latest issues and the correct language pertaining to those issues.

Amazingly Obama seems not to have learned any of this and he's going to be running next year on issues that last made any sense to anyone back in the 1880s ~ guy is totally detached from modern times and reality.

You gotta' go back some years to get that one. There was a period of time when Newt and other Republicans tried to portray themselves as MIDDLE OF THE ROAD ~ presumably to trick newly minted Republicans in Souvr'n states into thinking they really were.

You know, by denouncing the left and right.

There's no longer any need to trick Souvr'nrs ~ but the Catholics with still fresh Republican tire treads on 'em do need some encouraging ~ not as much as in 2008, but certainly something.

They do tend to stray from the truth path of Republican and Conservative orthodoxy!

Newt Gingrich as a public figure never embraced the axiom that "repetition is the soul of wit"

He should have gone with the real axiom instead. "Brevity is the soul of wit." For a thinker, Newt talks too much. Words are better used as spears, with a specific sharp point smashing into vulnerable points in your opponents armor, backed by weight and momentum.

Newt tends to machine gun his points from the hip, spraying ideas a bit wider than most would consider prudent. Most of his points are on target, but when he misses, it hurts badly. In this day and age, a little stray fire is a big deal.

He'd have been better off keeping it short, sweet, brutal and focused. A cautionary tale to other candidates, there.

On the other hand, a candidate that runs on issues that made any sense to anyone back in 1780's may be successful.

I was excited enough about Newt 17 years ago that I named my dog after him. The dog is still alive, unfortunately he is now blind, deaf, and his sense of smell isn’t what it used to be. We have been through good times and bad together so I still love him. Unfortunately, I don’t feel the same about Newt the politician. He has become a global warming alarmist RINO who attacks conservatives. If my dog had that kind of change of heart I would have him put down.

What with his $500,000 dollars open line of credit with Tiffany's and now this luxury cruise it sounds like impressing his weird-looking wife is more on Newt's mind than campaigning.

Like I said Newt didn't "become" all of that ~ he's just suffering from a time dilation effect ~ he's current with 1995 but not with 2011.

Back then "Global Warming" was a cult favorite but not an international obsession with Leftists fanatics everywhere.

Newt imagines it's important to show balance, hence his wink and a nod to global warming. At the same time WE now look at the same topic and notice the Leftist fanatics involved in it and we get an entirely different message than Newt thought he was sending.

He seems unable to get out of that trick bag (a 1995 term) and that's why he can't run for President effectively. That's also why he can't raise the big bucks and why he just lost his entire professional campaign team.
