Obama still wants Congress to reinstitute a federal ban on military-style assault weapons but the president is not and has not been pushing for that ban There are things that we can do short of legislation and short of gun laws.
- White House Press Secretary Jay Carney
In yesterdays column, I noted that President Obama seems to be responding to pressure from gun control advocates in a way that he has previously avoided.
I must not have been the only one to sense the change in the political winds flowing from the White House because today, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney went into full damage control mode.
While reassuring supporters of gun control that the President still wants Congress to reinstitute a federal ban on military-style assault weapons, Carney told reporters that the President will not push for stricter gun laws this election year. Note that he didnt promise that President Obama would not make gun control a centerpiece of any second term, only that he would not push for it this election year.
But Senate Democrats apparently didnt get the memo that gun control is failed public policy. Despite admonishments from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that the Senates schedule is too packed to even have a debate on gun control, the usual suspects were quick to pounce.
In an amendment to the Cybersecurity bill currently before the Senate, Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer, Frank Lautenberg, Barbara Boxer, Jack Reed, Bob Menendez, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Dianne Feinstein, are attempting to ban the sale, transfer or possession of normal capacity magazines.
Senator Schumer was quick to note that he was willing to debate where to draw the line of reasonableness with gun owners. I would remind Senator Schumer of a quote from well known liberal Rachel Maddow
But heres the thing about rights. Theyre not actually supposed to be voted on. Thats why theyre called rights.
So what should gun owners take away from the furious spinning of the White House press machine today and the seemingly rogue senators who are pushing forward with gun control?
The answer is that we havent seen the last of it. I believe that the amendment to the Cybersecurity bill is a trial balloon, sent up to determine how strong the reaction of the electorate will be. After all, Carney couldnt help adding yet another vague promise of unilateral executive action, stating that There are things that we can do short of legislation and short of gun laws.
What should you do? Get on the phone to your senators! Let them know that we are not interested in once again penalizing law-abiding citizens for the actions of a madman and that they should get back to work on fixing the economy.
The MSM continues to lose what little credibility it has left.
Uh oh! An Executive Order banning guns or at least "assault rifles" is forthcoming.
I am always amazed by how these congress critters must think that gun owners aren’t watching their every move.
Obama thought he could ride some political wave of support for gun control after Aurora, CO. Instead, the nannies have been shouted down, and Obama’s ass is hanging out in the breeze. How very inconvenient for him.
“But Senate Democrats apparently didnt get the memo that gun control is failed public policy”
Hm. I recall statements like this before Obamakill was passed.
I think this is just far left senators preaching to their far left constituents. They also know that the days of chutzpah are rapidly ending, that the Republicans will likely soon control the House, the Senate, and the presidency. And that there are going to be several fewer RINOs in the Senate.
So the more they tick off the Republican conservatives right now, the more they are going to get seriously kicked in the “neuts”, as it were.
I was actually impressed that Harry Reid shot off his mouth and said that if the Dems kept the senate, that he was going to change the rules to prevent the filibuster. That was a very daring threat to make so late in the game, and it just begs the Republicans to do the same, totally marginalizing the Democrats for at least two years.
If that happened, congress would be able to freely gut a vast amount of the government, and they would not be able to stop it. Only Romney would stand in the way of a huge conservative steamroller.
Chuckie Schumer isn’t stupid. That’s what makes him dangerous. But he is arrogant, and thinks basic rights can be debated & legislated. Arrogance could prove for him to be quite a banana peel. It was for Mario Cuomo.
How ironic that it takes a Rachel Madcow to know the skinny on what “rights” really are.
Also, Fast and Furious comes to mind.
Smells like good cop/bad cop to me.
"We're here to tell the NRA their nightmare is true! ... We're going to hammer guns on the anvil of relentless legislative strategy. We're going to beat guns into submission!"
-- Senator Charles Schumer, NBC Nightly News -- Nov. 30, 1993
