Well, the folks of WVA, Western Penn, Kentucky, Western Virginia and anywhere else that mines coal...and voted for guys like Manchin and Obama, need only look in the mirror to see what they have brought on to themselves. And the rest of us, I might add.

Obama's got it about right, he's just got the sides mixed up. Flat Earth was the scientific consensus in the time of Galileo. The Flat Earth religious zealots of that time were church leaders. The Catastrophic Global Warmists of today hold the same cult like zeal as the persecutors of Galileo. The problem is that it took a half a millennium to clear Galileo.

You have your history mixed up.
It was relatively common knowledge amongst sailors, astronomers, and the clergy (who were usually quite learned in the the natural philosophies themselves) that the Earth was round. Even a layperson without any formal schooling would be able to ascertain that the Earth wasn’t flat by watching a ship vanish over the horizon (it doesn’t just become a single dot; it will eventually appear to ‘sink’, due to the curvature of the Earth).
Rather, the commonly held consensus at the time was geocentrism, i.e. the Earth was the center of the universe. There was a lot of political factors involved in Galileo’s prosecution beyond his position regarding geocentrism vs. heliocentrism.
/though, to be honest, by the time of Galileo, a lot of astronomers had abandoned a pure geocentric model due to the works of Tycho, Kepler, and Copernicus
