The image above is tantalizing and frustrating in its scope and lack of resolution.
In writing articles about the great Australian gun confiscation of 1997, I have not found any images that I can easily use. I found an AP source, but they are very careful with copyright protection. I am sure that there are images of the destruction that are publicly available, but I am having a hard time finding them.
If you have better luck, please contact me. I would appreciate images that give the scale of the destruction and are clear enough to show details of the firearms that were confiscated and destroyed, though other images might well be useful of themselves.

The Aussies I know didn't register anything and then buried their treasures for later retrieval.

I recall years ago the NRA running a video about it, sort of an infomercial.

I googled “australian gun confiscation” and came up with many images. I don’t know how many are actually from Australia though.

The problem with burial is that if you feel the need to bury them, then you should be using them.

I posted a comment at the source suggesting that the author contact the Firearms Owners Association of Australia.

Here's a good one from GettyImages.com. It's from their editorial photo library. You're going to have to pay to use it, but it's always best to have rights to whatever photo you're using.

Shortly after the ban a sniper took out several cops. An Aussie politician said to the effect “Wait, it’ll work. You’ll see” - Australia has a high rate of gun violence since.

You need to find the article about the police building that collapsed near Darwin due to the cops conspiring to ignore the law, and help their town out by hiding the semi-autos in the ceiling. They took them in, logged them in with fictitious make/model/serial as to look like they confiscated the appropriate amount of guns for that population. When the federal cops showed up, they were too dumb to notice and took the barrels full of old junk guns and didn't even look at the manifests.
Anyways, there were so many semi autos stored up in the ceiling that it fell and injured 4 officers (some of which didn't know about the plan).
Unfortunately, they didn't have time to repatriate the guns back to their brother citizens and were forfeited for destruction.
Whilst with JSOC, I met some SAS (Australian SAS) and asked them about the gun grab, and they reassured me that there are tens of thousand of semi and even full autos in the hands of Australians. There are alot of smart patriots there risking their freedom and livelyhood, but know the full consequences of truely disarming. Joke in Darwin is that a new breed of gopher was created which buried only military style firearms.

It would have been better to take out several politicians.

Reports said there were 740,000 firearms turned in and destroyed.
One article I read said that 1.5 million Ruger 10/22's where sold in Australia in the 10 years prior to the gun law taking effect.
That number was only the 10/22's that were sold.
