Especially one that can go about 200 miles and that’s it.

And if you run the battery completely out you have to replace them. A toy for rich folks

Like most university scientists will say what ever it takes to get their funding regardless of the truth so Consumer Reports will favor those that pay the most. I’ve bought several products based on their recommendations only to find they are more costly and have inferior performance. So that now I do not trust their reports at all.

Frankly, I think Mr. Gilbert’s argument is one-sided and somewhat duplicitous. Yes, free-market blah blah and all that - good, yeah, sounds okay... it’s those damned greedy dealers and those damned federal laws that are a holdover from the days when manufacturers treated dealers like captive customers....

The thing I DON’T see discussed here is what the hell is Tesla going to do about repair and maintenance? Are you going to have to go online and find some subcontracted Joe-Blow garage? Go to a Tesla Storefront[i.e., an AppleStore]? How are defect problems resolved?

Ever tried to get an actual PERSON on the line from Amazon, or iPhone, etc.

I am not against them being able to sell their cars however they want. But I don’t want to be bombarded with one-sided arguments dating back to the 1920s, either. In the end, the life-cycle for purchase, repair and routine maintenance to protect the consumer HAS to be thought out and fit into TESLA’s business model somewhere.

Misses the point? It addresses the thesis i.e. the topic sentence!

The author’s claim - and yours - are that Tesla cars are the ‘best available.’ In the case of Consumer Reports, their biases and loyalties are well-established as is their shaky history of product ratings vs real-world performance.

As for ‘Big _______’ let’s try to avoid adopting the language of the left, with the notable exception of Big Government which is merely a euphemism for soft tyranny.

Big ________ is the kind of catch-all bogeyman preferred by class-action lawyers and grievance groups looking for a payday by inciting a mob.

If there is corruption then it can and should be addressed by pursuing the component groups.

In order to buy a Ford Energi plug-in hybrid, you have to hunt down a specially certified dealership - all other dealerships are not allowed to sell them. Ford knows which side its bread is buttered on.

"Fly out and pick up your Tesla, then drive it home."

What happens after the first 80 miles and your new Tesla runs out of juice? Yes, 80 miles. In most of this country you need to use either the heater, or air conditioner. That limits your distance for "fuel range anxiety" to about 80 miles, assuming you have a NEW battery.

Maybe you could drive over to the nearest Chevy dealer and get a trailer hitch added, so you could pull a trailer with a generator on it.

Frankly, I think that kind of technology, and the hassles that go with it are beyond a typical small-town dealer who may sell one in a year. Numbers and purchases are what drives the transition from “special case” to “normal everyday.” So I think it makes good sense to limit sales to dealerships to those equipped to handle the technology. At least they didn’t try direct-sales.

If Tesla is vertically integrated who looks out for the consumer? I am loyal to a local dealer because he has gone to the mat with GM on warranty issues for me twice. If GM owned the dealership I would of had to eat $hit.

Won’t help them this fall when the new turbos come out. Honda is going to open with the 2015 Civic turbo that gets between 60 to 70 MPG. Other models are coming.

Big money and big government are inherently corrupt.

Instead of being loyal to garbage, why not try something less troublesome?

Yep...that’s why we have anti-trust laws (unfortunately, no one has enforced them since AT&T breakup to my knowledge.) Corporatism is killing America in IMO.

Our government sucks. I don't want a Tesla car for the money, but these laws are just crony capitalism at work.

Another reason I will NOT vote for Christie if he's on the Republican Presidential ticket - big government stooge.

I believe the trailer-pulled generator accessory is only available on the deluxe model.

Snide comment from you aside, I tried Ford and payed a hugh and series price for the problems with their diesels. Thousands to fix an injector pump or EGR valve. I operate a fleet and Duramax is the best right now. Cummings suck wind compared to Chevy and Ram trucks fall to pieces around my drivers.

Oh and if you are referring to electric of any variety no outlets in the sage brush sea where we operate.

I wonder how much the car dealers paid Crispy to get him to limit consumer choice?

You might also wonder how much the car dealers paid to various New Jersey legislooters to pass the bill in the first place.
