The American Flag Daily: Missouri Statehood

Missouri, the 24th state in the Union, was admitted on this date in 1821. The 24-star flag, introduced on July 4, 1822, would remain the standard for the United States for 14 years, until the 25th star for Arkansas was added in 1836. During the time of this edition of the flag, the term "Old Glory" was first used by Captain William Driver, commander of the whaling vessel Charles Doggett.

I know, this may not be the most important thing on the internet today, what with everything happening in Iraq, the Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere, along with all the turmoil in our own country, but I feel strongly about celebrating our heritage as Americans, believing in God, country and our flag.

I also believe that if we forget our history, not only are we doomed to repeat it, but we also lose some of what makes America unique - that we were once a nation of expansion, of great ideas, of great achievements, and I believe we can be again.

The odd thing about Missouri was that, even though it did not officially become a state until August 10, 1821, its electoral votes were counted in the 1820 election.

Not that it made much difference: James Monroe got every electoral vote minus one.
