Americans aren’t getting married, and researchers think porn is part of the problem

There could be an unlikely contributor to the decline of marriage in this country. And it's free pornography on the Internet.

A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, determined that the rise of free Internet pornography is not only correlated with a pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might actually be contributing to the trend.

"The results in this paper suggest that such an association exists, and that it is potentially quite large," the study notes.

The researchers used data from the General Social Survey (GSS), a comprehensive, nationally representative survey, to analyze how 18-to-35 year-old men used the Internet between 2000 and 2004. They focused on how many hours each participant spent on the Internet per week, and how many reported having used the Internet to view pornography in the past 30 days, but also observed other activities, including the use of religious websites.

"We asked ourselves, what is helping determine whether people are married or not?" said Dr. Michael Malcolm, a professor at the University of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and one of the study's authors. "One of those things, we thought, could be the use of pornography."

~snip~

The reason, Malcolm explains, is likely tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is viewed as a means of alternative sexual gratification, then it could be undercutting the need for marriages to serve this function, at the very least during a younger age. Think of it as a milder form of premarital sex.

Maybe men are beginning to realize that todays female is not a person you can rely on to spend the rest of your life with. Todays female is simply looking for a man that meets her requirements. 1) can fulfill her maternal needs. 2)Then she can park the results of that relationship with a third person to raise while she moves on to fulfill what she has been told are her needs. The man must accept those terms or there is a divorce. Result the results from that relationship is raised by a third person.

Utterly true. I think men care more about actual love more than women by far. Women are almost all up for the highest bidder. And then they act like men are the ones who won’t commit.

Thanks...usually I get hammered for advising my kids to stay clear of cultures that seem to value divorce more than marriage.

I hope the chance comes, we do have a LOT of immigrants in this country, so there are possibilities. Good luck!

When I was growing up, men tried to date pretty girls they hopefully would marry someday. Now they stand around in little circles playing video games on their cell phones and other metrosexual activities.

Yeah, it just doesn’t seem like the scene for me. There are too many reason to not do it versus doing it.

As far as people making babies outside of families, I think that is the result of recreational sex, which is a real shame, because babies need both a mom and a dad, and they also need a stable family unit of means in order to help them have the best possible opporunity to succeed in my opinion.

No, the reason is the same reason people joke about marriage

“I was going to get married but I decided to save time and just find a woman I hate and give her my house”

And divorce court is NOT fair and balanced. It is two lawyers fighting with each other until the money is all gone, followed by a stupid decision which destroys whatever remains of the fathers life.

I never cease to be amazed (and I live in a fairly small town) at the number of late teens and 20 somethings who just decide to live together (we used to call it shacking up). Seems like far too many young people just aren’t interested in marriage.

hah.

I have no doubt that you are correct.

I know that I am not good husband material. My attitudes would get me kicked to the curb so damn fast.

But that’s alright, i have no intention of changing myself in order to be acceptable to a wife.

I have seen the self imposed torture that my brother subjects himself to in order to keep his wife happy, and the mere thought of such an existence makes me cringe.

I would rather remain a feral male.

Maybe men are beginning to realize...

I'd have thought you daft until I saw Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."

Some men actually "get it."

Maybe.

Go to Bretbart and look the the “sexodus” articles.

Men are turning away from women because of the legal and emotional risk. You see a few buddies go down with various legal and financial hits, you stop looking.

But where are the Groom Shows? Weddings, at least in America, are where women go to be Princess for a Day. And expect their Prince and their Parents to pay for the fantasy.

More and more men have Done the Math, and conducted a Risk/Cost/Benefits analysis. . .and found that Marriage is entirely too high a risk for men, comes at too high a cost, and provides comparatively few benefits.

Hence, hookup culture, one-night-stands, prostitutes, and porn. . .

Let me tell you a little secret.

When I was single, thankfully ten years ago, to the “singles” group at my church. My pastor, who became my friend, pulled all of the guys in for a private talk.

He said that dating the girls in the singles club was not allowed. See, it brings a lot of liability and tension when the relationship doesn’t work out. He would schedule events with other church’s groups as a way to meet other church going women, but the ones in the parish were, if not completely, off limits.

He had been burned to many times, and been called as a witness to a few to many harassment cases. All of which were found to be false.

I second that. This notion of sex being “readily available” is BS.
