Americans aren’t getting married, and researchers think porn is part of the problem

There could be an unlikely contributor to the decline of marriage in this country. And it's free pornography on the Internet.

A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, determined that the rise of free Internet pornography is not only correlated with a pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might actually be contributing to the trend.

"The results in this paper suggest that such an association exists, and that it is potentially quite large," the study notes.

The researchers used data from the General Social Survey (GSS), a comprehensive, nationally representative survey, to analyze how 18-to-35 year-old men used the Internet between 2000 and 2004. They focused on how many hours each participant spent on the Internet per week, and how many reported having used the Internet to view pornography in the past 30 days, but also observed other activities, including the use of religious websites.

"We asked ourselves, what is helping determine whether people are married or not?" said Dr. Michael Malcolm, a professor at the University of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and one of the study's authors. "One of those things, we thought, could be the use of pornography."

The reason, Malcolm explains, is likely tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is viewed as a means of alternative sexual gratification, then it could be undercutting the need for marriages to serve this function, at the very least during a younger age. Think of it as a milder form of premarital sex.

ESL or English as a Second Language. They speak in tongues, while consumed by their own Holier Than Thou spirit and find it difficult to maintain just a smidgen of sanity when know can understand just what the hell they are saying.

Reason is something they shiw up with but, at some point decide that tool of logic is just, well, “stupid” and out the door that goes, as they remove key facts and content for the sole purpose of creating an other worldly context.

There are many more symptoms of KuhRayZeeBitchitis but, worst outcomes are objectified men become highly disinterested in certain women, finding satisfaction through sports, working on cars and generally anything that disgusts a woman but, leaves man in a state where he isn’t being forced to think constantly and parrot back, to his new master, all his imperfections she has discovered.

The final result is a complete lack of interest which has a genesis.

Excessive cause and causation lead to extraordinary lethargy in men and not being able to speak whatever language it is that a woman hurls with speeds up to 120mph and gusts up to 180mph result in just plain being sleepy to dim the noise.

My Grandfather told me years ago that there are only two reasons a man is not married over the age of 35. He is either queer or of superior intelligence. With divorce laws and child custody arrangements as they currently exist, there is no financial incentive and many disincentives for men to get married.

It's no picnic for women, either, although individual cases vary. The way it now works is that the person who invested the least in the marriage and the children will prevail against the one who sacrificed for the marriage and childcare. Could be the man, could be the woman.

The divorce industry and so-called "no-fault" jurisprudence create winners and losers; but there can be no winners in marriage. Marriage requires teamwork and sacrifice for the good of all. An increasingly foreign concept.

And let's not forget: the lawyers always win first before anyone else.

I have a young guy at work that was an intern, then got hired. I liked the heck out of the guy, so took him aside and warned him that now that he had a (really) good job and promising future, to watch out for women that would “put the hooks into him”. Little did I know at the time, but his “live-in girl friend” had already “forgotten something” and was now pregnant. They are still together, and he is working to be a good father to the child, but he is not interested in getting married, as it knows once the ring is done it will be through his nose. He’s already seen the devastation in other male coworkers lives due to divorce (many stories here). Pure fear drives men away from marriage now with its financial and emotional pitfalls...

Financial reasons are the most likely reason as you say, especially amongst young people. I would also say that the culture does not encourage it any more and liberals cheapen the institution. I think that recent book “Men on Strike” is on target.
