Iran responsible for Beirut bombing, U.S. judge finds / Relatives of 241 Marines seek recompense

2003-05-31 04:00:00 PDT Washington -- A federal judge ruled Friday that Iran was behind the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 U.S. servicemen, clearing the way for more than 600 of their relatives to collect financial damages against the Islamic republic.

In a 30-page decision that resulted from a lawsuit filed by the families, U. S. District Judge Royce Lamberth wrote that the terrorist group Hezbollah had carried out the attack at the behest of Iran and its Ministry of Information and Security.

"The approval of both the Ayatollah Khomeini and President Rafsanjani was absolutely necessary to carry out the continuing economic commitment of Iran to Hezbollah, and to execute the Oct. 23 attack," Lamberth wrote. "Given their positions of authority, any act of these two officials must be deemed an act of the government of Iran."

I had to pause listening to Netanyahu's speech because I didn't know it was Iran running Hezbollah. Netanyahu and his staff do not forget our Marines who died that day. Obviously those top politicians who skipped the speech don't remember, and I am sure this is why Pelosi was driven to tears as I was.

Do you think the families of the Marines who sued Iran will be included in the deal?

Iran the biggest exporter of terrorism and some of these Dems are actually attacking Bibi for coming here to make a speech about the dangers his country faces when he was invited.

Stunning.

These idiots are nothing but anti Israel, anti free speech and closed minded to different opinions and facts.

If Bush had done half of what this administration had done then he would have been impeached and gone for ever.

[imagined:] "The terms of this Agreement shall constitute the entire Agreement between the parties and any issues deemed outstanding by any branch of government of each of the respective parties, or by any constituent court or citizen or any groups of citizens of the parties shall be deemed forever resolved and vacated as to any further remedy outside the terms of this Agreement."

Yes, I'm sure Barry & Kerry have had our soldiers' families in their minds when considering their (traitorous) Agreement with Iran.

BTW, who can tell me why this secret agreement would not constitute a "treaty" between the parties, requiring Senate approval? Thanks in advance.

The treaty issue is being discussed, on fox anyway, and executive order was included in the same breath.

Two years after the bombing I was on station off the coast of Beirut with BLT 2/8. We were told we would be landing to evacuate civilians. We were VERY fired up and ready to go! We were hoping to get some payback against Hezbollah.

The morning we were supposed to land they cancelled it. We were very disappointed.

always did my research only for hezbollah and the articles that came up, even historical, didn’t attribute the influence of Iran. I didn’t investigate hezbollah and the research is only within the last three years or so and not in depth. Thus the shock. I was in lala land until 9/11. Didn’t know about Free Republic until I heard it mentioned on Hannity and then I joined. Didn’t realize I was a conservative politically till then either. Very naive.

My daughter in law’s grandfather was a survivor. I’ve only been attached to the 1/8 since my son served with them since 2011.

We all have to start somewhere. I had my head up my nether region until clinton committed his treason.

What's so frustrating is that they (iran) have been killing Americans in iraq and afghanistan, threaten to destroy us everyday and the traitor-in-chief is kissing their a$$.

Remember, we are the "great satan", Israel is our puppet, the "little satan".
