Bill Nye now agrees with Ted Cruz that GMOs are good things
The Houston Examiner ^ | March 9, 2015 | Mark Whittington

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas told the Iowa Ag Conference that it was time to “push back” on “anti-science zealotry” concerning GMOs or genetically modified organisms, according to a Saturday story in the Washington Times. GMOs are crops that have been modified to have desirable traits, such as resistance to pests or to contain certain helpful vitamins and nutrients that they otherwise would not have. Oddly enough, Bill Nye, the former “science guy” and former GMO opponent has come around to Cruz’s point of view.

Nye, who is not a scientist but played one once on Children’s television, has joined in on the scientist as priesthood phenomenon, inveighing against the unscientific thinking of the hoi polloi. He has been particularly vehement against climate change “deniers,” even those who are actual climate scientists. He was also, until recently, an opponent of GMOs, on the theory that they were bad for the environment.

However, Nye, unlikely many “anti-science zealots,” decided to investigate for himself and went to the belly of the beast, as many view it, and studied the technology at Monsanto, the leading firm for GMOs. He discovered something that Ted Cruz already knew, that GMOs are a good thing. Pest resistant crops, for instance, mean less use of pesticides, which is good for the environment. Nutrient and vitamin infused crops, such as “golden rice,” can help millions of people overcome deficiency diseases, in this case, blindness....

The Boeing engineer also got his start in entertainment on a late night Seattle Saturday Night Live-like comedy show.

That adds to his credibility as a liberal scientific expert, IMHO

In all fairness, there was one GMO that could have created an unimaginable disaster. The idea was to modify a common soil bacteria to make it more efficient, thus making land more fertile.

The trouble is that it worked too well, wiping out all the other soil bacteria, which are also essential for crops.

Fortunately, it was unintentionally contained, but still contained, in an open container of soil. Once they figured out what they had done, they incinerated everything that had come in contact with it, except the scientists themselves.

National Geographic, on their most recent cover, lumped together anti-global warming folk, anti-vaxxers, anti-evolutionists, and anti-GMOers with the people who deny the moon landing ever happened.

We're all one big happy anti-science gang!

After attending Lafayette Elementary and Alice Deal Junior High in the city, he was accepted to the private Sidwell Friends School on a partial scholarship and graduated in 1973.[8][9] He studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University (where he took an astronomy class taught by Carl Sagan)[10] and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1977.[11] Nye occasionally returns to Cornell as a professor to guest-lecture introductory-level astronomy and human ecology classes.[12]

§Career

Nye began his career in Seattle at Boeing, where (among other things) he starred in training films and developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor for the 747. Later, he worked as a consultant in the aeronautics industry. In 1999 he told the St. Petersburg Times that he applied to be a NASA astronaut every few years, but was always rejected.[13]

That’s a risky cover since most of the Moon-landing deniers are in fact anti-GMOers AND Global warming nuts.

They are liberals that believe virtually any conspiracy theory that comes down the pike. It’s easier for them to believe the conspiracy then to do any research on their own.

I suspect Bill Nye went to Monsanto to do “Show Prep” and was blown away bye the real science they have done.

They are officially on my lifetime ban list because of that issue, along with Popular Science after they put Nye on the cover.

When GOD says it is good, it is good. No GMOs for me.

Genesis 1:11-12

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

The problem of course is not what we intend the GMO activity to do but what it will do, as previously illustrated in a previous post.

These GMO crops are foisted on the public with insufficient testing. IMHO the public is the test bed.

It is a shame that Mr Cruz is pandering to the pharmaceutical industry/lobby by supporting this experiment on humanity where there are no consequences for failure on the part of the company making billions off the patented seed.

Failure being the malformed/cancerous/disease prone result of introducing molecular arrangements with unknown effect to an unsuspecting populace eating 'food' that is 'good' for you (trust us).

It is a monstrous crime against humanity and I do not mean only the USA as this GMO experiment has been foisted on populations all around the world.

Much of the EU has banned it entirely (as if a rule could matter). For example birds eat seed and then fly and then poop... there is no way to control where the poop lands but if it hits dirt with sufficient water it will grow.

Kind of like an Ebola sneeze, which previously would not spread the infection until it did ... oops.

At least Bill Nye is willing to revise his opinion or position when confronted with evidence to the contrary. Ken Ham never changes his position on any meaningful element of his creation “science”.

If you are in the United States, it is very hard to avoid.

But, then, we are the dumping ground for toxicity. Only 3-4% of the rest of the earth has been converted to GMO crops. Huge swathes of land in the United States has been converted (and if it hasn't it's possibly been polluted with GMO pollens). Cotton, soybeans, corn--it's in the 90% range for all three.

We better be feeling lucky because they don't have a frikking clue how this one ends.
