(I could live without it, but The Chief of Procuremenet will not.) Is Hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime the best option for someone who has a few favorite shows? Will show be ONE WEEK behind on episodes or ONE SEASON? (assuming these shows on cable are not available right away) Dish is not an option (she won't allow it on the roof)
Will likely be getting DSL from a phone company.
Have been cable/satellite free for two years +. The freedom of streaming on line shows either on websites or through apps (Netflix, Hulu, etc) has been awesome! We watch what we want, when we want, on our schedule and terms. I don’t miss 200+ channels with nothing on, one bit. Also, it’s been great to spend time just talking, playing cards, games and reading as a family, too! We basically watch/stream one or two nights a week. The benefits are outstanding AND we save money AND don’t listen/watch the drivel. With so many free or streaming for a fee services available today, I don’t know why anyone would pay the exorbitant costs for cable or satellite, just my two cents.
No not the best put up one on a pole outside or in the attic and use an in-line amplifier ($20)...
Mine is an outdoor (figure-8 shape) antenna. Did not place in the attic because we have reflective insulation there.
But if you're like me and need to check in on the Giants 5 times a week and the wife needs Shameless and Nurse Jackie to be happy, BEWARE.
Especially on the Nurse Jackie part.

You may not even need one of those. A cable guy showed me how to make one out of about a 2' length of co-ax. I can get about a dozen HD channels just using that. If you're in a big metro area you should do even better than that.
A DB4 antenna will work for 30-40 miles.
If you live in an urban or suburban area you’ll get HD network channels and 10 to 20 other excellent definition channels with a $20 antenna.

For the few good cable shows, like Walking Dead, I think you’re stuck though. Downloading them from “link” sites is one option.
So I can tell my kids we’re no longer the only family on the planet that does not have cable? :)
I have one of those wacky digital antennas that I use on my boat and it works just fine. I get quite a few channels. Everything else I watch for free, the latest and newest stuff, from free streaming websites by hooking my iPad to my tv.
I don’t pay for anything. Everything is available streaming for free.
I’ve been checking that out too.
I made a list of the channels I watch on a regular basis, and when I went to those sites on the internet, they were showing full length copies of current shows. I’m not sure if you can watch it in real-time, or if you have to wait until a day later to be able to see the whole program.
But, it really looks interesting; and promising.
Of course, if they do manage to put through Net Neutrality, then I’ll be off the Net completely.
And, since I write a lot .. my computer will still be busy writing stuff .. it just won’t be on the internet.
I haven’t decided yet which way I will go. First I need to talk to my cable people and see what gives with them.
You don’t have to download them. You can stream them for free as soon as the episode airs. I was out of town last night and watched the dead at 8:30 west coast time, before it even aired here. As soon as it aired back east it was uploaded to the streaming sites.
You seem to have a lot of questions. Can you not think for yourself? Re: Several km varied A Posts today. TV, where to sell guns, where to live????
He said he was probably getting DSL. DSL doesn’t do well streaming IMO. In fact I dropped Netflix because the quality wasn’t that good.
I can download High Def with DSL and play it fine.
We just dropped the cable two weeks ago. We have Netflix. I don’t know what the others (hulu, Amazon, etc) are like. Get a Roku,or something similar, and you can watch other stations, like History channel and Smithsonian channel - plus many more. Some free, some not, like SlingTV:
SlingTV doesn’t have too many channels - maybe 12 or 15? All live tv. Channels include several ESPNs, HGTV, Travel Channel, Food Network, AMC, TNT and a couple of others. NOt for everybody, but we lucked out because we like at least five of the channels. $21.00 a month.
Anything else we like, we can usually find on the internet.

If you can live with paying for commercial content, Hulu has a pretty good line-up of regular run TV shows. Netflix and Amazon Prime have pretty good movie selections as well. Just remember, if it's not out on DVD, the online services won't have them either in most cases.
We have been cable free for years and the only thing we miss is Viking’s games. We have Netflix and really like it-especially with teens in the house. The recently watched feature means we know exactly what they have seen as there is some nasty stuff available.
Like a previous poster said, Netflix has a bigger library but Hulu and Amazon have more current TV shows. Hadn’t been a problem until I finished season 9 of Bones and now have to wait who knows how long for season 10. It bugged me for about a week and I have now found other things to watch. If that would really bother you then you would not want Netflix.
Whenever we are visiting family and watch cable the commercials drive us crazy. We love not having commercials.
Ultimately though, you want the CP to be happy :).
Will not provide the bandwidth necessary for reliable streaming.
