Ted Cruz: 'I don't think I've ever seen an Hispanic panhandler'
Business Insider ^ | April 29, 2015 | Colin Campbell

Presidential candidate and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said on Wednesday that he has never seen a Hispanic person begging for money on the street.

"I don't think I've ever seen an Hispanic panhandler. And the reason is: In our community it would be shameful to be begging on the street," Cruz said.

Cruz, who is of Cuban descent, made the point while speaking in Washington at a question-and-answer session with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

He used the example to argue the Republican Party should be able to compete for the Latino vote. Hispanics, Cruz said, share many of the same values that are championed by GOP leaders....

Mr. Tabasco, don’t you think you owe Texan an apology. After he specifically said that he does not hire illegals, you accused him of picking them up and loading them onto his truck.

Thank you Red-I might not have been clear enough on the fact that this is a rural area-and I also should have said “Latina” rather than the general term Latino-I am a woman.

WE see them all the time at the Walmart near our neighborhood. Cubans are not the norm. They are not like Mexicans and Central Americans.

How in the world does his statement “enable” illegals?

It was a silly thing to say. Here’s the thing, Sen. Cruz is building a campaign on no nonsense talk, and he’s purposefully saying things to evoke a reaction from certain quarters.

Reactions equal coverage. It’s not a bad strategy. The downside is that some of those comments will be clunkers.

It was well intentioned. The Hispanic community at large has a culture that fits in much better with Republicans than democrats. This is why dems won’t let go of this issue. Future votes are one thing. Keeping Hispanics from voting GOP today is much more important. If the dems lost the Hispanic majority to Republicans, they’d become a regional party. Hence the constant immigration agitprop.

Sen Cruz was trying to speak to that. He let loose a clunker. No big deal.

No. He is supposed to be running for the presidency, not exalting one group over the whole. I mean, of all the lethal issues we have to contend with in this country; we are on the verge of losing our country, and all he can find to comment on is waste of time statements like this. However, that comment is revealing about what he thinks; he is laying the ground work for something, which will probably be amnesty if he gets in. I once liked Cruz, but not that much any more since he came out for as much or more legal immigration. And he is not dumb; he knows the Constitution and he knows he is not eligible to run for president. That will be used against him later on.

Are you serious? If you are, you just embraced Obama and his team by engaging in Alinsky tactics of name calling when they can’t deny something. Also, I’m no more of a birther than our Founding Fathers who wrote the stipulation into the Constitution.

“Most are Christian Vietnam Vets.”

LOL! I thought the exact same thing as I passed by one yesterday!

“Homeless Vet
Anything Helps
God Bless You”

I do give them a nod and a smile so in case they are really down and out they at least are recognized as a person. We give to three charities for the homeless, plus our church and others that help. There is plenty of help out there if they need it other than my dollar to go buy cigs and beer.

"Yeah, but, there they are begging for jobs and not a handout. Big difference. "

Exactly. I live on So. Cal. -Generally Hispanics here are at the Home Depot, Day Labor sites, or selling stuff by the side of the road, or at the parks, or other public areas-They sell flowers , fruit, food, sodas everywhere. This tendency is what Ted is talking about.

(Then again they also sign up for the benefits the democrat party tells them they are entitled to, but that is a separate issue.)

For any Walker and GOPe trolls who show up trying to twist this into saying he supports Amnesty- He does not support Amnesty, and has been leading the fight against it, unlike others who don't seem clear about which side of this issue they're on.

I once supported Cruz too, until he revealed his stance on immigration. Incidentally, Hillary just came out and said we had to change our embedded religious beliefs. Did Cruz call her out (I don’t know)? That’s redefining the 1st Amendment. That is major. Much more important than whether Hispanics are panhandlers.

No candidate is going to be perfect, but Cruz at least rises above mediocre.
