Columbia University Advisory Board: Greek, Roman Mythology Needs "Trigger Warnings"

Columbia University students are calling on the college to provide trigger warnings when Roman or Greek mythology is read or assigned in class.

In an op-ed published in Columbia’s student newspaper, the Columbia Daily Spectator, students Kai Johnson, Tanika Lynch, Elizabeth Monroe, and Tracey Wang called for warnings in a piece titled, “Our identities matter in Core classrooms.” They explained they are writing on behalf of the Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board, or MAAB.

According to the authors, a survivor of sexual assault was asked to read Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” in particular the myths of Persephone and Daphne. In the tales, rape is depicted.

The authors write that the student was “triggered” and thus “completely disengaged from the class discussion as a means of self-preservation.” After reading about the mythology, “She did not feel safe in the class.”

It is time to have warnings on Western literature, the authors then assert, because they are classist, racist, and offensive. “Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” is a fixture of Lit Hum, but like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom,” they explain. “These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background.”

The fact of the matter is that “students need to feel safe in the classroom, and that requires a learning environment that recognizes the multiplicity of their identities,” the authors write.

To do that, MAAB has made several demands: “First, we proposed that the center issue a letter to faculty about potential trigger warnings and suggestions for how to support triggered students.”

Ivy League educated students. The future “leaders” of our country. We’re in big trouble.

They are not only material Luddites but intellectual Luddites as well. Maybe they should spend their time with something more suited to their intellectual level, like “Archie Comics” or “Superman”.

Where are the ‘trigger warnings’ for Obola, or Islamic
terrorism, or ISIS, or the Treason that has brought
all Enemies of the US Constitution into the homeland?

So now we need warnings on Greek mythology??? Really??

But colleges freely and openly and brazenly push “The Vagina Monologues” without any warnings of how obscene and violent that performance is. Vagina Monologues contains a scene of female sexual assault by another female. But that’s ok apparently, because it is pushing “lesbianism”, and being “lesbian” makes you a member of an officially recognized grievance group.

If you become emotionally or psychologically disturbed when reading fiction, you need professional help.

I can see how a graphic, nonfiction account of sexual assault would trouble a rape victim.

I can also see how college students looking to do as little as possible are attempting to avoid grappling with the classics.

I’m not so sure Archie comics or Superman adventures wouldn’t trigger something for these idiots. I bet the Dick and Jane primary readers of our youth would trigger mortal terror with their overt sexism.

It probably has something to do with academic topics they find useless since it is so obviously easy now to twirl government around their fingers with diversity, inclusion, exclusion (of hurtful things that might upset them), understanding, feeling and compassion for those things not conservative.

In truth it is the act of maintaining constant influence and control. They’d simply rather get the degree after a few cush classes and then move off to some elite liberal job judging and punishing others they disdain, all the while enjoying their unfettered and well funded lifestyles which they deserve simply because they are better than everyone else....they ‘feel’.

One wonders if a lot of this talk about "trigger warnings" and "microaggressions" is just a smokescreen for the students' feeling that they are in over their heads and will be unable to satisfactorily complete the course work.

A top-rated college is in fact a somewhat intimidating environment for ANYONE because - to use a sports analogy - everything speeds up, and it's hard to keep up the pace. To me, many of these students are saying, in effect, "I can't keep up anymore."

Those who want to be offended can always find something that offends them.

The problem is, those few get enough attention that what offends them gets censored.

Rule by minority.

Making the world safe via political correctness — one offense at a time.
