It's finally official: Roger Ailes, the president of Fox News, will decide which candidates can compete in Republican presidential primaries next year..
------------
FOR THE RECORD
GOP debate: Doyle McManus column on the rules for the first Republican presidential debate stated Roger Ailes is president of Fox News. He is its chairman and chief executive. A photo caption said the date of the first 2015 GOP debate is Aug. 5. It is Aug. 6.
------------
Think I'm exaggerating?
The rules Fox recently announced for the first GOP debate Aug. 6 make the cable network a more influential player in the campaign than ever before.
Fox has said it will allow only 10 candidates onto the stage, and it will choose them according to their standing in the five most recent national polls. Candidates who miss the cut are basically out of luck.
That first debate is huge, Republican strategist David Winston told me. That's going to be a real sorting-out moment. Any candidate who can't get into the first debate will be at a significant disadvantage.

Hey Mr. McManus, I know, let's let George Stepalloverus and Bob Schieffer do the selections; now wouldn't that be fair?
Why do they think it's their business how the right chooses their candidate?
Fox “News” will attempt to knock out conservatives
and insert ... Mitt RomneyCARE at the last minute.
Well, it’s actually the RNC that ultimately controls the rules.
You certainly have been Mr. Glass-is-completely-empty the past few years :-)
It's a conspiracy, I tell you, FOXNEWS and Roger Ailes are trying to control the election and the minds of their viewers!
Ultimately, yes, but the RNC clearly abdicated that responsibility to the networks. Otherwise, the first 2 debates would have the same rules, not the ones created by FOX and CNN.
So then the LAT should spend money and run their own debates and invite the “bottom tier” candidates.
Geez, these days you can choose a pollster to get any results you want.
Wouldn’t it be delicious if Jeb Bush would not make the cut, after all the promoting that Fox does for his candidacy?
Do what Reagan did ... BYPASS the Media and there are very many more choices today than there were then.
TT
Dude, I watch FOX a lot and have not seen any one Candidate favored.
They tend to give a lot of coverage to a candidate once they declare candidacy and then go on to the next one.
You know, it’s not like the LAtimes can’t host their own debate with their own rules.
those pushing Carly and others like Carson are risking letting Fox push Cruz off the stage.
GOP party rules are that a candidate participating in a debate not sanctioned by the GOP will be ineligible to take part in any other sanctioned debate.
Both the RNC and DNC made rules this year that if a candidate participates in an “unsanctioned” debate, they are excluded from all remaining debates. So LAT could set one up, but no one would come.
I don’t know which polls FOX will use other than their own, but Cruz is polling high in most polls at this time.
in the latest Iowa poll he is 8th
Walker 17, Rubio 6, Paul 10, Huckabee 9, Bush 9, Cruz 5, Carson 10, Christie 4, Santorum 6, Trump 4, Perry 3, Fiorina 2, Kasich 2, Jindal 1
We conservatives are playing with fire here by giving people who have zero chance of winning (cough, cough, Fiorina cough cough Carson) our support at this point.
We need to stay focused on getting Cruz into the debates.
Who’s to say fox wont cut the number down to the top 5 after the first debate, for the sole purpose of trying to get Cruz off the stage.
Then the LAT/etc. should be publishing the rules and asking why?
I mean, *we* know why they want to corral the herd to pick their chosen ‘best’ (that will continue to parrot the party line...I mean, how many in the field even bring up the Constitution anymore??).
Course, that would have happened back when we had actual gum-shoe writers, instead of repeating the A.P. 99% of the time....
How about that little commie loon that helped shut Romney down on Benghazi during the 2nd debate?
