Poll: Only One-Third of Republicans Support Same-Sex Marriage

The polling results indicate that same-sex marriage will be an important, and likely very divisive, factor in the 2016 U.S. general election

New polling data from the Pew Research Center shows very low levels of support for same-sex marriage among Republicans.

The Pew Research Center survey, conducted May 12 to 18 among 2,002 adults, found just one-third of Republicans support same-sex marriage, in contrast to 65 percent of Democrats and Independents.

Among religious groups, white evangelical Protestants are dominantly opposed to same-sex marriage, with a 70 percent opposition rate. Other major groups surveyed—including Catholics (38 percent opposed, 56 percent in favor) and white mainline Protestants (33 percent opposed, 62 percent in favor)—are generally in favor of same-sex marriage.

This can’t be right. Rooters and the rest of the MSM have been telling us we’re “at a tipping point” and a majority of Republicans suppoprt gay marriage.

I believe it’s much lower. Else why would they have to have the courts intervene in so many states if the voters are all soo supportive?

Do they “support” it, or are they just grudgingly ready to put up with it?

Opponents of same sex marriage have done a terrible job making their case. Usually they just go the biblical route, which means nothing to those who don’t share their faith. I think most young people have never heard a non-religious argument against it. So they think everyone opposed are just “religious nuts” and “haters”.

One third? Too high. Off the top of my head I’d make it less than 10%, taking into account the fact that people, especially Republicans give politically correct answers instead of what they really think, when being polled. Plus almost all referendums on gay marriage have come out against gay marriage, even including California and Oregon, bastions of liberalism.

Exactly. Ballot issue after ballot issue passes denying same sex marriage or civil unions and a judge overturns it.

Sure seems like a majority of Americans do not support same sex marriage. Or at least they didn’t.

What I don’t understand is that same sex marriage makes absolutely no sense. There is absolutely no biological reason for people of the same sex to “partner up.” Yet, we are told that it is no different from a man/woman relationship.

Very weird times. Very weird indeed.

Even if you try to use logic and past results from other countries like Canada and some European countries, they scream that their rights are being denied! They do not care about anyone’s opinion, logical, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of association or other!

This generation is a lazy bunch of liberal sh!ts, and they need something, they want something, they have found something to hang their “success” on: gay marriage!

All logic and everyone else’s rights be damned, they are going to get it!

California passed prop. 22 by 61% in 2000. It was struck down by the state SC. Then CA passed prop. 8 by 52% in 2008, which was struck down by federal judges. Forget the judges for a second. With actual voters the issue lost 9% in 8 years. In 2012 NC passed its amendment by 61%, and it was hailed as a great victory by many. But in reality all it did was match the CA of 12 years before. If you would have predicted that in 2000 you would have been called nutso.

The activist left will for sure. But the vast majority of Americans are not ideological. They take each issue separately with no real cohesive underpinning. Those people have unfortunately been convinced that same sex marriage is "fair", because our side has done a lousy job talking about how it will affect adoption, child custody, etc.

I disagree. Our side has been screaming about every single one of these angle from the very beginning. However, the MEDIA has only highlighted the religious argument (in an effort to make opponents out to be a bunch of religious nuts).

Then, add to that the fact that media and the Liberals have been hammering along: every new show has a homosexual character (who is always perfectly normal), complete series have been created to promote homosexual normalcy, movie shows, talk shows, news shows, etc...

My point is that this wasn’t a high school debate contest where both sides had an equal opportunity to discuss the issue - the game was RIGGED.

Our argument on EVERY level has been correct and thorough. But, the old saying that “you shouldn’t argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel” is what has caused this fast, massive shift, not for a lack of effort, nor poor messaging on the part of Conservatives.
