With the release of this new movie about Stalin enabler, cheerleader and pom-pom girl Dalton Trumbo, it got me to thinking about his novel "Johnny Got His Gun". It also got me to thinking about the lack of literature which would support the fight for Western Values, considering the existential threat we face.
Your thoughts?

I didn’t realize Trumbo was still alive.
The protagonists in the "anti" column are thoughtful, reluctant, dare I say "sensitive" to the posititions of the enemy. "Pro" are basically cartoonish or caricatures of what a conservative warrior.
Going back to my original post and my follow up, makes me think it's not a period thing. I think it's almost a brainwashing things. I'm not sure if I'm presenting my point correctly.

If the following credo is drilled into your head, you may forever look at anti-war books and films as normal, in the Western world sense where Peace is considered to default with occasional wars, the truth is the opposite:
The credo is this:
War is always preventable.
Precious resources and lives are always wasted in war.
Nothing is gained as a result of warfare.
If we treat each other and nation states as equals, we will limit violence in the world.
If we dream like John Lennon, the bad forces in the world will eventually come around.
We are, all of us equal in every way form and shape.
An Islamic woman Palestinian who sends her son to be a suicide bomber and then pass out sweets after he dies along with innocents, is the same as \ Jewish mother who protects her son from arm...WRONGO!

seems like there were definitely more pro-war MOVIES than novels - especially with WWII Hollywood cranking out uplifting movies with their favorite actors - John Wayne was mine.
There was one book on the summer reading booklist (Catholic school for girls) we were given to read that wasn’t anti-war: Up Periscope by Robb White. While it was clearly an adventure story, it was a WAR adventure story. I wonder if any boys reading that joined the navy later in life?
At the time I was disappointed that there were not more books like it. Cherry Ames just wasn’t as exciting.....
Young men are playing video games, not reading. Plus most young men don’t serve in the military anymore. I think the interest in the genre is fading.
there will always be a need for heroes and hero stories. The publishing industry has mainly suppressed any hero stories but they’ve got to come out somewhere. So the ‘heroes’ end up in games and cartoonish Hollywood productions -— Spiderman etc. But then remember ‘Saving Private Ryan’, a great film. This is just not appearing in our literature.
Heroes go to war. So being anti-war and anti-hero serves the same propaganda end. The subject of war and war heroes will reappear sooner or later. they can only suppress heroes and hero stories for so long.

"Anti-war" just means you think we are fighting for the wrong side.
Are you asking where the “war is real” stories; the non-political “war is horrible” type of stories?
I think I did misunderstand you point.
If you are looking for THAT, at least in a non-fiction way, “War” by Sebastian Younger comes close. It reads like a novel.

Let’s not forget W.E.B Griffin,he has written at least 50 novels on war and secret agent stuff...all pretty good stuff.
