OH: Gun Reform Passes House with Wide Margins, Moves to Senate
Gun Watch ^ | 2 December, 2015 | Dean Weingarten

House Bill 48 is the prominent gun law reform bill pending in Ohio.  It is a modest bill that makes only a few reforms.  It removes silly prohibitions on permit holders from carrying concealed guns in day care centers, in the unsecured areas of airports, and other "gun free zones".   It passed the House by over 2-1 (68-29) on 17 November,  and has 42 cosponsors in the house, including the Speaker.  The bill is now before the Senate.  Here is a summation of HB48(pdf):

To amend sections 311.42, 2923.12, 2923.122, and 2923.126 of the Revised Code to modify the prohibition against carrying a concealed handgun  onto institutions of higher education, day-care facilities, aircraft, certain government facilities, public areas of airport terminals and police stations, and school safety zones and to allow a sheriff to use concealed handgun  license fee revenue to purchase ammunition and firearms.
According to Buckeye Firearms, Chairman Ron Maag (R-Lebanon) has refered to current "gun free zones" as "unarmed victim zones".  From buckeyfirearms.org:
Maag refers to the currently prohibited places as "unarmed victim zones," noting that people risk becoming a victim of a crime when they are required to leave their firearms at home.
The bill has not been scheduled for a Senate hearing at this time.

Ohio passed significant gun reforms a year ago.  Governor Kasich signed H.B. 234 into law on December 19th, 2014.  That law received a higher percentage of support in the Senate than it did in the House.   There were large vote margins for passage of the H.B. 234 last year; 24-6 in the Senate, 69-16 in the House. While H.B. 48 is not the same as H.B. 234, the coalition brought together to pass it is likely very similar.

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris and in California make it more likely for this bill to pass. Another positive thing is that Governor Kasich would get to build some conservative creds by signing this bill.

True ... he's hurt himself considerably during the run for President. This is an opportunity to start that healing process. However, he appears to have consumed a considerable amount of liberal kool-aid. I'm not certain he has his head on straight to see the need for doing the will of the People (instead of what he thinks is best for us).

Finally, some common sense gun control laws.

You talk about Kasich's "healing process"? He has backstabbed constitutional conservatives every chance he gets. The OH Senate and House, which are admirable, represent the state well. Kasich is a phony who sold out to DC and corporate interests long ago.

JMHO, but I'm wondering if there's a Kasich problem next summer, when the Republican convention comes to Cleveland. How can Kasich represent the interests of OH at that convention when he's come close to labelling Trump as a Nazi, refuses to say he'd support Trump as the nominee, and avers (with Jeb-caliber smugness) that Trump won't be the nominee?

If kasich somehow gets the nomination, I will “John McCain” him and stay home on Election Day. The man is nuts.

Oh he’s still around. He’s buried in Cleveland Heights. Probably still votes a straight democrat ticket but isn’t in office anymore.

Everything you say ... true. Kasich is damaged goods and he inflicted the wounds himself. He is begging to be primaried out of his governorship. I wonder if he understands that. Or if he's too far "radicalized" (to borrow that stupid term) in liberal thinking to care.

A law was passed nearly a year ago that allowed an Ohio CCW permit to be used in lieu of an FBI NICS check yet the gun shops are still performing NICS checks. It’s been a year people. You’re violating your own laws at this point.
