A brokered convention to undo Trump would destroy the GOP

GOP preparing for war

Currently, Donald Trump dominates the Republican field in virtually every single poll. In most, he’s enjoying a double-digit lead over his nearest competitor. If that data holds, one would assume Trump will glide to an easy primary victory. Whether or not he’d win the general is a separate, easily debatable, question - but there’s little doubt that it currently appears that he’s headed for the nomination.

...And the mainstream wing of the GOP is less than pleased.

According to the Washington Post, the GOP elite are currently hosting high level meetings to discuss the idea of a floor fight that would usurp Trump and select a more party-friendly candidate.

Pam Geller who doesn't get along with Trump

She was on Lou Dobbs and said he is the only one who gets it and the people she knows if they screw with Trump they will become the Whig party with just the low cost labor donors but no voters

Remember, it was “Republicans” who put Obama in the White House - Noonan, Brooks, Parker, Powell, Weld, Adelman, McClellan (Bush press secretary, Susan Eisenhower, etc. etc.

These and the current GOPe would have no problem with Hillary in the White House, as long as they are getting their cut of the action.

They don’t give a damn for America.
For all his faults, Trump does.

If no candidate has a majority of delegates going into the convention, you will have a brokered convention. In that case, I don’t see any way Trump wins the nomination. After the first ballot, the wheeling and dealing will begin, and the delegates for the other candidates will probably begin to coalesce around an alternative.

I think the only way Trump wins the nomination is if he can get an absolute majority of the delegates going in. But that will be true of any candidate this year. I don’t see any candidate going into the convention with a majority.

This is bold talk from a one eyed fat man (OK I reckon Rove has good vision). They know Trump can go 3rd Party just as easily as stay with the GOP, and they’re scared shiteless he’ll do it an leave the R party in shambles with a fraction of the vote and either Trump or Hillary as president. So they won’t do it. Not because they are smart but because the senators and congressmen who depend on the GOP money-raising machine won’t let them.

Ted Cruz and Donald Trump will be the "smartest guys" in the room at the 2016 GOP Convention ...

Their delegate counts for the 2016 GOP Convention will be as follows:

Ted Cruz @ 37.80 percent
Donald Trump @ 27.3 percent

for a total of 65.1 percent ... enough for a "first ballot" nomination.

Ted Cruz will ask Donald Trump to be his Vice President, and Trump will accept.

Trump will pledge his GOP Delegates to Ted Cruz, and the rest will be history.

This pattern of spiteful sabotage and misguided aggression may be just the way the Whig Party met it’s demise back in the days of Lincoln.
How ironic that would be, considering that the term “Whig” was derived from ‘those who oppose tyranny’.
The Whigs, were only a force for about twenty years; 1833 to 1855.

The US is an oligarchy and Trump doesn’t play by their rules. That’s why they go with family names that are part of Them (Bush, Kerry - 3 Skull and Bones btw) or just power hungry and will do their bidding (Clinton, Obama).

Yeah, but all indications are that THIS TIME it is true. When every commentator almost without exception, every politician, almost without exception, and every country in the world has a big mouth shouting that Trump is a disgrace, I am REALLY INCLINED to be FOR TRUMP just on old fashioned American Principles. To hell with everybody trying to tell me hat I am supposed to think and then having the nerve that they can limit my choices! The Pond Scum is NOT going to succeed this time.

“Their mission is to prevent us from stopping The Cheap Labor Express.”

Cheap labor will last maybe one generation. Those born here and “educated” here wont work so cheap. After that, they will join unions and vote like good little democrats. I think its more about people who will keep the status quo in power than cheap labor.

Yeah, the last one we know about would have been in 1920,

What about the Dem. convention in 1968, where the nomination went to Hubert Humphrey, who hadn't run in a single primary?

If ANYBODY had a chance of pulling of a brokered convention in any party it was Hillary back in 2008.

It's not like it was a hundred or even fifty years ago. By the time the conventions roll around the general campaign is in full swing and the parties both realize that there is no way to change this.

If one candidate handily wins Iowa and New Hampshire, it's pretty much over. If they go on to win South Carolina, it's certainly over. It will be over by Super Tuesday no matter what happens.

Whether or not he'd win the general is a separate, easily debatable, question

How could someone argue, with a straight face, that Hillary (or Sanders) would defeat Trump?

Trump would unload on Hillary so fast, she wouldn't know what hit her. She doesn't just have a glass jaw...she IS a glass jaw.

The media has been able to protect her, but they won't be able to do that in a general election. Hillary has so many skeletons in the closet that Trump will have a hard time deciding which to attack.

While the hardcore leftists may come out to vote for Hillary, the rank and file of the parasite class will just stay home.

The day Bill Clinton dies is the last day the left will care about Hillary (and Chelsea).

The days of the smoke filled rooms were a select few horse traded delegates ended about 100 years ago.

A "brokered" convention is what happens if no candidate wins a majority on the first ballot. After the first ballot, delegates pledged to particular candidates are released from their pledge. On subsequent ballots, they are free to switch their votes until some candidate finally wins a majority.

So, what happens if the top two are Trump and Cruz or Cruz and Trump? I would think the lower vote-getter would ask his delegates to vote for the higher, who would then win on the second ballot.

Of course, many more chaotic outcomes are possible.

The Donald’s ascension proves the GOP is toast already. GWB was their last hurrah, they just didn’t know it. GWB pulled the covers back and exposed the underlying liberal policies.

This probably won’t end well.

That is EXACTLY what is going on. The “VICHY” government is under the impression they can control our every breath. They are under the control of the Dems (Gestapo) and doing all they can to hold on to the shreds of one time glory. We were sold out a long time ago.
