Planned Parenthood is building an army to prepare for the 2016 election

PITTSBURGH—”I can’t wait to cancel out my dad’s vote.”

The theme of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s membership summit was The Power of Pink, but Audrey Leonard had just articulated what I would come to understand as its unofficial, almost spiritual, motto.

Call it the anti-dad bloc, if by “dad” you mean a certain kind of conservative, often older, male voter. The same constituency that has, in a great many states in this country, defined whether and how women like Leonard can access basic health services.

The 18-year-old college student from Indiana was one of nearly 1,000 people, most of them under 30, who had traveled to Pittsburgh to spend an overcast weekend in May comparing notes on canvassing and discussing the implications of the 2020 U.S. Census on congressional districts.

It wasn’t fun, exactly. But neither was having two dozen states with anti-abortion Republicans controlling both the legislature and the governor’s office—a combination that has created something of a hermetic political seal against progressive efforts to expand access.

Which is why Leonard was in the Steel City, eating bland conference food and spending her afternoons troubleshooting strategies to get people on voter outreach lists to actually pick up their phones.

The event, the first of its kind for Planned Parenthood, was focused on the small stuff by design. The organization was building out its grassroots network in an effort to fight accelerating state-level attacks on access to abortion and, often, Planned Parenthood’s very existence.

“We very quickly had to get our bearings and figure out what we needed to do in these states in order to fight back,” Deirdre Schifeling, executive director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, told me. “We are building our strength because we must....

“...can access basic health services.”

If abortion is so good, why don’t they just say it instead of hiding behind weasel words.

No one I know want to deny any woman access to basic health services. I do object to abortions on moral grounds.

Also the same group of people that developed the technology that provides just about every health service and technology we have in this country, including antibiotics, surgery as a medical treatment, diagnostic instruments from xray machines to ultrasounds, and just about every other aspect of modern health care.

And actually women can access "basic health services" everywhere in this country, whether they simply choose to walk into a doctor's office, or drugstore, or decide to rely on someone else paying for their medical care.

I suspect the Planned Parenthood activists aren't really interested in basic health services, but a far more controversial and lucrative business Planned Parenthood runs.

”I can’t wait to cancel out my dad’s vote.”

And I bet she still expects dear old dad to pay her college tuition.

Leftists hate the concept of federalism. The other 2 dozen states allow abortion, and they're still not happy.

Fine, cancel my Trump vote and pay for your own college and time for you to get out of the house and pay your own way TODAY, and you get zero inheritance.

That’s what I’d do to a daughter threatening me with planned parenthood.

Then i’d say, too bad your mom didn’t go there 18 years ago.

“I suspect the Planned Parenthood activists aren’t really interested in basic health services.”

I’m pretty sure these young activists *are* concerned about basic health services.

It’s the people that *run* PP that couldn’t care less about health. They’re in it for the easy money selling legal death to those interested.

The people that run PP know they couldn’t hire the number of people they need to promote their business. Instead, they have to deflect any focus on their core business away from people and use these kids to indirectly promote their business for free.

I’m sure many of these kids will regret what they did a few years later when they learn what that sickening service is all about. It’s why they always have to recruit new skulls full of mush!

Unless everyone on this thread, everyone on FR, every Christian,
spends some time each day or week or month in front of an abortion
mill, there is no point bemoaning what PP will or won't or might do.
It's a job that can't be farmed out; no champions can stand in our places.

The same constituency that has, in a great many states in this country, defined whether and how women like Leonard can access basic health services.

Whether or not women have the right to access basic health services isn't even a discussion that is on-going right now.

I wonder if these little dunces are aware that Planned Parenthood does not offer health care services, other than a few token procedures that they engage in for public consumption?

Thank you for your service - I didn't know, and I will say a prayer for you
and others similarly afflicted when I make my daily stance.

I can tell you that someone in your situation makes an especially powerful
witness. But I in no way am encouraging you to do other than what you are capable.

My point in my post is that we are unified against abortion, against PP,
but not in our response. If we were, we could end it town by town.

I’m hooked up to IV antibiotics until late June and have a wound care nurse in three times a week for a bad hole in my heel.
