CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. First came the grimaces the disbelieving eyes trained upon his shirt, his signs, his car window stickers broadcasting a local betrayal.
Then his teenage son refused to drive the family car without redecorating, hiding the three Make America Great Again hats that usually sit atop the dashboard.
And there are deeper indignities still more piercing than any parking lot glowering or dinner table slight when John Nadler feels the full weight of his status as Americas loneliest supporter of Donald J. Trump: Acquaintances in the hometown Mr. Nadler has known for nearly three decades will not look him in the eye.
People Ive known for years, Mr. Nadler, 63, said. Just nod or wink or something. Anything.
Across the country, every election introduces a measure of neighborly strain. Allegiances splinter. Eyes roll. Conversations curdle.
But Mr. Nadlers case is unique. His neighbors include Bill and Hillary Clinton, perched behind a white fence about a mile away on Old House Lane. And the town is proud, and fiercely protective, of its most famous residents....

I would be ashamed.
I think a FReeper lives in Chapaqua. Wonder if it’s him
Put your red Trump ball cap on. Let’s give them something to talk about!
I know what this article is getting at, but come on. Aren’t we the ones ridiculing the delicate little snowflakes for wanting a “safe space?”
This guy needs to grow a pair.
While in the Air Force, I was stationed for two years in Plattsburgh New York and I probably spent more time in that state than she ever did in her life. I or nobody else considers me a New Yorker.
Is this you?
I know three people who live in Chappaqua. A former colleague from work, a good friend of mine and his wife. They all despise the Clintons and will never vote for her.
“I know what this article is getting at, but come on. Arent we the ones ridiculing the delicate little snowflakes for wanting a safe space?”
True enough but the precious college snowflakes literally have no problems to deal with. No one is actually doing or saying anything to them. No one is “glowering” at them. This guy is meeting with actual hostility. Low level hostility, but it’s real. The college kids have no valid complaints.
All true. But perhaps this incident is revealing for the first time what these people really ARE to him. Petty lowlifes.
this is complete BS....i live in the town just north of chappaqua and guess what? I see a TON of Trump stickers on cars...
That’s right. That is not where she grew up. She grew up in a suburb of Chicago not far from where I live, but I don’t see them claiming her as their most famous citizen. Heck, I grew up in the same city as Bob Woodward, the Belushi brothers. Red Grange and that fellow who invented the Hubbel telescope, and I don’t see any parades for any of them.
His name was Ed.
Thanks. Did I spell it right? I just remember they named the high school after him. (I think) Can you figure out which town this is?
I wonder if there was a ‘lonely’ Gore / Kerry supporter in Kennebunkport Maine (Bush Family Compound) who was so ostracized in 2000/2004 election cycles. Strange that that was never mentioned (to my knowledge)! As far as I am concerned, this citizen is being the equivalent of “Horatio at the Bridge”, defending his RIGHT to hold a contrary opinion to the town’s favoritism for the Clintons.
You’re right.
Their property value goes up once it is the Presidential home town.
Chappaqua should be ashamed to be proud of hosting the Clinton crime family. Much of America is.
I wonder if Obama is shipping ghetto people there to urbanize the community. How much can I bet her town gets a Waiver.
