A ‘65, and they don’t know how to roll the odometer? Or drive it 44,000 more miles?
“...civil asset forfeiture...”
More proof there is no Constitution.
For a '65 Nova? Somebody got a real good deal I think......
-—...questionable use of the civil forfeiture statute...-—
Think it’s bad now? If Hillary gets in it’s going to be: ‘all your assets are belong to us’.
“Civil Asset Forfeiture”
....and cops wonder why people want to shoot them all the time.
Duh.
Shooting someone who is stealing your property is perfectly legal in many states.
Yet there are any number of ‘law & order’ types infesting this site who would disagree...
Thank you. Or just disconnect the speedometer before borrowing the car. Easier than installing an eight-track.
56,000 miles in a year on a ‘65 Nova? That’s a helluva lot of driving. What was the fuel bill?
56,000 miles is a lot of time on the road. In very rough figures, let’s say 1,000 hours, or about 3 hours every single day. I’d think people around there would have noticed, since you don’t see a 1965 Nova all that often.
“department sold the vehicle for $1,500
For a ‘65 Nova? Somebody got a real good deal I think.....”
Oh yea, a great deal! And I get the feeling that whomever bought it was buddies with the department....
At 16 mpg, you can figure 3,500 gallons were used up.
So, now let’s get to the audit or legal side of this....do you want to make a bet that the county sheriff’s gas card business....has roughly 3,500 gallons extra used over that one year period, and that the sheriff’s office paid for that gas out of their funds?
How illegal do you think that is? They might get away with the seizure but using the county gas card for personal use like this? That’s a hefty fine and probably reason for termination.
Pigeon pucks. This story's got more holes than a set of honeycomb wheels.
You’ve just got to love the sheriff’s defense. It didn’t happen, and besides I wasn’t responsible.
So the seller was too lazy to check mileage and made up a figure on the high side.
Think they gave a tip to the buyer?
“And I get the feeling that whomever bought it was buddies with the department....”
Yeah, somebody ought to look into that. But if someone really put 56k on it in a single year, it might have been pretty ragged out.
Clouded title from the improper seizure, too.
What do you think a Drug War looks like?
“...although it was missing seats that were being reupholstered when the department seized the car.”
What’d the sheriff sit on? A 5-gallon plastic bucket?
Besides, a four-door “muscle car” (missing the seats)?
Nah.... they can keep it.
