Okay, I’ve just about had my fill with the news about the United Airlines passenger being dragged off the plane because the company overbooked, but the passenger refused to leave the flight.
Should they overbook? Probably not. There is an average number they have calculated of the number of people they believe will not even show up, so based on those numbers, they overbook a little bit to make sure the seats are full. There is not exactly a very big profit margin in the airline industry, as it is.

United might be innocent in the “fine print area” (emphasize “might”, they probably violated their own CoC due to lack of proper government required notification and their definition of “boarding” is in error), but they are not innocent of stupidity. Up the offer until you get a “willing” volunteer and you avoid the potentially messy mandatory booting of people off the plane.
Idiotic. I fly a lot, and all airlines overbook. This is something that has got to be examined, because many more people fly now, there are fewer flights, and overbooking has become completely routine. Normally there’s enough college kids or single travelers who will take the voluntary offer - but even so, there were 450,000 over-bookings last year, and 40,000 “involuntary removals” in that same year.
So most people accepted the offer, and about 10% didn’t. They got removed, but this doctor’s removal - and yes, I know about his past, and yes, it doesn’t matter in this context - may be the thing that brings about the reevaluation and restructuring of what was a minor bad policy that has become major overnight.
Also, that said, I fly Delta, which has always treated me right. THere have been delays and problems, but they have always been good about keeping me informed and compensating me if I can’t get back on time for reasons that were within their sphere (bad equipment, and believe me, I don’t want to fly if the pilot doesnt!).

No, as a point of fact they have to go by their own policy in their own contract.
He was not in violation of 49 U.S. Code 46504 as he was not “assaulting or intimidating a flight crew member or flight attendant of the aircraft,..”
Look closer:
Passengers who fail to comply with or interfere with the duties of the members of the flight crew, federal regulations, or security directives;
The passenger received the directive that they were being involuntarily bumped. When the passenger failed to comply with that directive, they then violated Rule 21
You are wrong regarding the airline’s actions. I did see the video and did hear him threaten a law suit if the airport police tried to remove him. I don’t dispute that.
His past convictions have no bearing on this incident. There is nothing to indicate he is not currently practicing medicine. It could well be under certain restrictions by the medical board, I don’t know.
Not defending his convictions but it does not take much to get a felony charge when drugs are involved. Also 98 counts does not mean he was alleged to have done this 98 times but refers to the number of pills he trafficked/prescribed.
Yeah he had a sordid past and I hope for his patient’s and family’s sake he has moved on.
The key word is “Security” as in “security directive”.

The problem is that the internet loves to smear reputations, like kicking the dog after a rough day.
UA will be smeared for many months just as capital was smeared by Marxists in the past.
Reality: the fake doctor was unreasonable on many levels (rejecting suggestions, rejecting cash, rejecting upgrades, rejecting future tickets) and concluded that if they do me harm, then I shall do them harm. Two wrongs don’t make one right. Turning the other cheek usually works for the best.
United Airlines may be technically “innocent,” but UAL deserves whatever shit hits their fan whenever. It is the maximum of miserable for long distance flights, at least in the cheap seats. The staff resents the passengers because they are the burden the bosses inflict on them. They think they signed on to wear spiffy uniforms and fly to exotic places, not cater to passengers like they are actually working for a living.
Airport police or whatever they are, they are still THE authority on the field...and the Left DOESN'T LIKE AUTHORITY!

Yup. I can’t believe the number of people who weigh in on this and still don’t understand the basic facts. Whatever your opinion is of this, it was not overbooking....it was the perceived need of an airline to get priority staff to a location that required (on their part/in their minds) the relocation of paying passengers. That should have been done before boarding.
Nope. In regards to the post to which I was responding the key word is security. The poster (Was it you? If so I apologize for losing track) reasoned that Dr. Dao had disobeyed a directive and that was the reason for his removal. But the regulation provided specifies “security directive”. The crew did not issue such a directive.

I know it’s not a business but Obamacare does sound similar.
