A web visit from an IP address in a Google facility more disturbing than a White House visit in 2010
LoudCitizen.org ^ | September 4, 2017 | Paul Klenk

Posted on 09/04/2017 6:41:21 AM PDT by Silly

This morning, someone in Googleplex, Google’s sprawling facility in Mountain View, California, visited this Web site. I know because their company name and IP address, originating from 1600 Ampitheatre Parkway, appeared in my visitor log tracked by my statistics analytics service. (See graphic below.)

Perhaps I should be pleased to see that LoudCitizen.org has attracted their interest. But the increasing suppression of free speech from tech giants like Google, Facebook and Twitter only makes me wonder if I am on their radar like so many others.

I haven’t been this concerned since 2010, when I reported on Ray Kelly’s speech about Barack Obama’s and Eric Holder’s decision the host to terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s “criminal” trial in lower Manhattan.

That story not only attracted multiple visits from White House servers, but just about every branch of government and major media (see my Lucky Lotto page, where I have documented notable site visits). The morning I noticed the White House was reading my piece, I was thrilled, but also a bit nervous that someone was accessing my story from servers originating from the IP address of The Executive Office of the President, www.eop.gov.

This morning I am just as concerned, but not the least bit thrilled.

“I really can’t imagine whey they would be interested in my page. “

There are hundreds of web crawlers out there. Anyone who hosts a small web site and logs all visitors will see a majority of their traffic are robots scouring their web sit.

So this s not about rules (which, if I’ve broken, no one has said).

It’s about being tacky?

What about what you’re doing? Tacky or not tacky?

Getting a message out, an important message, means spreading the message far and wide. Sorry, that’s they way publishing works.

Now, if my message wasn’t interesting or relevant or newsworthy, that might be a different matter.

But I think my message is all of the above, and it deserves wide coverage. That’s why I wrote it, that’s why I published it.

Thank you, trisham, pinging us to that comment was a thoughtful thing to do. I’m happy to know I operate exactly the way JimRob intended. And I’m happy to say I posted this thread in the blog category.

This is almost certainly either a bot of some sort, or if it’s a real person, they are sitting behind some kind of anonymizer proxy that is falsifying their user agent string... the chances of an actual, live Google techie using a combination of Win7, IE11 and that tiny screen resolution are practically nil.

I do log all visitors, and robots are a TINY portion of my traffic. I can see where they came from, what search criteria they used, where they linked from and what sites they linked back to. Only a tiny minority of visits logged are from crawlers. And yes, I can assure you, it wasn’t a crawler or bot that visited me today.

Nor was it a crawler or bot that read this FR thread, then jumped back to read my article.

Agree?

Wrap in Google Wallet payment (or the Apple version) for the meds and it gets even more infuriating from a tech view. I’d bet SKU and UPC numbers are part of the “transfer” of information taking place between seller and payment handler...or soon will be.

We were at an outdoor craft fair this weekend with the vendors selling from those little tents. I paid for something at one tent with a charge card...seller used a phone attached device (not The Cube, some other brand). I gave them my new phone number to text a receipt. Several tents down, made another purchase...seller, using a phone attached device also, asked if they could text the receipt to the phone number ending in XXXX...my new number. Just incredible.

There is nothing to agree to. If you say so, I’m fine with it. I don’t click outside links, so I didn’t go to your site to see what you posted.

“When I posted it about it and cross posted to Twitter and FR, they visited FR as well, and then read my article about their visit.”

I’m retired now, but when I had my business, the best place to advertise was Craig’s List. I could dump tons of money into advertising thru Google and Yahoo, but the absolute quickest way to get a bump to the top in “search” results, was to enter advertisements in Craig’s List. And, it happened fast. I don’t think I ever got a call from the CL ads...but the search results produced phenomenal business.

That all came from those little bots crawling around the Interwebz.

I don’t think I’m wrong about that. Google crawls constantly. Blogger is owned by Google, they crawl blogs constantly.

That’s the way the internet works.

Even if I am wrong about that, I find it distasteful for you to use FreeRepublic to draw traffic to your blog. If it was really important, and you wanted to discuss it here, you would have posted the image.

But here’s the thing, it’s not important, Google crawls websites 24/7.

And me? I’m completely snitless.

Stats counters may differ. I have two 15K page websites and when I look at my stats counters I see the site crawlers all the time.

Thanks, mairdie. It’s one thing to hear “about” how Google and other tech companies monitor certain people. It’s very different when it happens to you, or when you get a first-hand account.

I actually have my stat counter suppress certain statistics from my total numbers and viewable logs. They capture them but don't include them in totals or displays. Bots and crawlers are one source I've asked them not to include.

So when my site gets hit by Google servers on Ampitheatre Parkway in the Googleplex, I take note. When I write about it then cross-post to FR, and I see Google not only hit my article, but also FR (!), then click back to my site, I really take note.

Whlie I'm shouting out to Google, let me give a shout out to someone in FPO (Fleet Post Office), Armed Forces Europe, visiting today via U.S. Navy servers in Africa's Republic of Djibouti, which borders Somalia.

Who knows, it could be a Freeper, or the son or daughter of a Freeper, in our armed forces.

Thank you for your service!

You’re pimping your blog, and taking yourself far too seriously.

You left off the image to draw traffic to your blog because you want hits.

More than once on this thread you make reference to your “analytics” so
clearly we know you are aware of and concerned with your hit count.

I hope your blog gets hacked by gay furries.

I sort of cracked myself up complaining about this guys blog, usually I think Humble is a little too hard on the clickbaiters.

You’re lying, humblegunner, but I guess that’s just you doing what you always do. Par for the course.

You lie about the reason I left off the graphic. Not true.

You lie when you say me awareness of hit counts and visits means I’m trying to drive traffic. Read the article. It is germaine to the topic.

I may be taking myself too seriously, but I am not taking the issue of GoogleTwitterFacebook blocking conservatives too seriously. It is a real problem, and I’d like to know what you’re doing about it.

If you read the content, you would understand that. But I guess since you don’t like bloggers, what you say about me really doesn’t matter.

The only gay anything I’ve seen today is attention by Google and the likes of you.
