NEW YORK (Reuters) - President Donald Trump’s call for National Football League owners to fire players who protest during the U.S. national anthem revealed an “unfortunate lack of respect” for the NFL and its players, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Saturday.

Goodell, in a statement released a day after Trump suggested any protesting football player was a “son of a bitch” and should lose his job, never mentioned the president by name but made a clear reference to his remarks at a political rally.

“Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities,” Goodell said in the statement.....

The majority of the NFL players do stand during the National Anthem. Unfortunately they are going to suffer too just because of a few thugs. But the good guys need to step up and put pressure on these few thugs or they will all lose.

Hilarious to me; these overpaid thugs are killing the golden goose that overpays them to play bad football.

A pox on all their houses.

“unfortunate lack of respect” for the NFL and its players, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said .

You can disrespect the National Athem but don't dare disrespect a disrespectful NFL player.

Has Terry Bradshaw and the gang ever commented on the NFL thug protests? I don’t watch that anymore.

Pete Rozell wouldn’t have tolerated the childish antics in today’s NFL for a second.

Bingo!!!! Did Snowflake Goodell ever say the same about Kaperpunk—not having respect? I don’t think so.

I think it should be one game suspension each time they pull a stunt.

And here I was thinking it would take a couple of years for the NFL to collapse.

At this rate, the owners could be surveying smoldering ruins by December; completely clueless as to why.

Time to draft Condeleeza Rice as NFL Commissioner. She loves the game and has a sober perspective on race relations.

...comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities...

Think about it Mr. Goodell, why would a President say such a thing about your organization? Could it be you're living in the past? That the NFL, it's teams and players are in fact no longer an "overwhelming force for good?"

Mr. Goodell, you are kidding yourself if that is still how you see your organization. Under your "leadership" the NFL has strayed ever further away from the principles that made it what it was, but sadly is no-longer. You want respect? You, the NFL, the teams and players are all going to have to work to earn it back. That's right, earn it back because as of now, you get virtually no respect and that is on you and your leadership failures.

You know what I did last week instead of watching the game? I volunteered and helped a friend, spent the afternoon in a cold garage with a wrench in my hand. You know what I'm doing tomorrow instead of watching the game? A little carpentry around the house. You want my time, my attention, and my money - you're going to have to earn them back.

Respect is EARNED, not demanded, Roger. If the NFL and its players are not receiving the respect they desire, then try earning it for once! The players by their respect for our Country and its Flag; you (Goodell) by making some hard choices to discipline these ingrates.

All I can say is the NFL players were divisive first. The national anthem and the flag are supposed to unite us, reminding us all that no matter what our differences may be, we are all Americans first. Shame on the NFL and its players for being so divisive!
