To Understand Trump Talk, You Must Speak Outer Borough
The Federalist ^ | 1/8/18 | David Marcus

Posted on 01/08/2018 1:36:06 PM PST by Duke C.

Appearing on Fox News last week, actor Scott Baio explained a very important fact about President Trump’s rhetorical style. In responding to attacks on the president’s tone and and general fitness for office, Baio had this to say: “I’m going to help the media right now, okay, I’m going to try to help them…It’s not going to go anywhere, but I’m going to try to help them because they’ve called the president, the president has dementia, he’s and idiot, he’s not mature…I’m from Brooklyn, President Trump is from Queens. This is what we do. We mess with people. That’s it.”

I think that Trump’s outer borough background is one of the reasons that the NYC-DC crowd hates him so much. A lot of it is simple snobbery dressed up as righteous outrage.

I have lived in AZ and NM all of my life. I completely understand Trump. Reporters really should get out more.

Which is why “I heart NY” became the town's slogan in the 80’s. I loved living there for that reason. You could speak and be spoken to anyway you pleased. The only PC I noticed was at the university where in the 80’s it was still “safe” to be incorrect, but watch out for the bite back from fellow students and certain professors.

Okay...let me try this one on you and see IF I can disabuse you of your supposition/like of "polished" speakers.

Many Americans are/were very taken with the posh English accent and so, assumed that those who talked that way were always brilliant, insightful, and/or intelligent and so, rather than actually hearing what they said, ONLY heard/hear the accent. I don't know if it is still true, or not, but I'm guessing that it is. And sadly, you've fallen for the American version of that and need to give that idea up!

Time was when only actors and actresses and then radio, followed by T.V. people had VOICE COACHES! No, not ALL of them, but it was done so that the audiences would look up to them.

Pols didn't bother with such things, long ago, but more and more recently, many HAVE either had voice coaches, or been "TRAINED" by their handlers.

And it isn't just American pols....Margaret Thatcher got herself a voice coach, but THAT had much more to do with wanting to rise in p0osition and the fact that she was often put down, early on, because 1) she was only a "groucer's daughter" and the Brits were and still are BIG SNOBS and elitists!

Ya see, I’m from the Bronx. I don’t hear Trump’s New Yawk accent. He has gotten a classy education. I can control my accent so I don’t sound like a Bronx ‘gavone’. Trump does a better job of it. Either way the ATTITUDE never leaves you even when the neighborhood street lingo does.

I don’t know what personality style I am but I was for Cruz until he blamed Trump for the violence at his Chicago rally. Dropped him like a hot potato and joined the Trump Train immediately. So I was looking for someone a lot like the profile you gave but that PC appeasement done for political gain told me Cruz lacked strength and moral certitude. Something Trump has in spades.

Liberals would run right over the top of the leader you say you want and never look back, that type of person is generally polite to a fault.

At this point in time we really need Trump to stand up to the liberals.

As an aside, I love the NY-Tri-State area. Best place in America for my money.

I lived at 80th and 1st in Manhattan, 22nd just off Broadway, 7th Ave at 29th St, and 78 West a block from the Museum of Natural History.

And during this time, I had a home in Darien, CT (which was the most beautiful state I have ever known).

The most dignified area in the Tri-State area is clearly Connecticut (except for those who are fans of Gilligan's Island and, more specifically, Thurston Howell the 3rd).

Nope...not really.

I have a VERY good ear for accents; especially ones from all of the 5 NYC boroughs, and can pick the sounds apart, in other's speech.

I have NEVER heard Trump's accent, before he threw in his hat, for the primary, and because it was SO strange to me, have paid a great deal of attention to it.

My grandmother was fascinated by NYC accents and I got my interest in them and learned much from her! And as I grew older, also did my own research into accents.

My accent would completely confuse you! LOL

She’s a Jersey girl?

That explains a lot.

There’s a great lline in the Steven Seagal movie “Out for Justice”. He’s picked up a stray puppy and goes into a convenience store in the neighborhood to get dog food. He asks what would be best, and the counter man gives him some food.

The character says, “None of this is from Jersey, though, right? ‘Cause I don’t want no radioactive stuff, know what I’m sayin’?”

The counter man answers, “I don’t blame ya”.

Perfect.

It's a boarding school term for a certain accent.

Katherine Hepburn had a very similar accent; however, yes, it is a Long Island one.

Re your query...was that aimed at me?

Nope, didn't live in Locust Valley ever, but my family has our summer house nearby. and NO, I don't sound like that! :-)

But yes, you nailed it...Thurstan Howell had a LOCUST VALLEY LOCKJAW accent on GILLIGAN'S ISLAND.
