It was Obama's own publisher that first said he was born in Kenya. NPR later repeated it.

Barack Obama was born in the U.S. It was his own book publisher that started the false rumor that he was born in Kenya. NPR later repeated the false claim.

Barack Obama was born in the U.S.

According to this 2012 article from ABC News, in 1991 Obama’s own book publisher printed a paper pamphlet which said that Obama was “born in Kenya.” An employee of the publisher said that it was a “fact checking error” of hers that caused this to happen, and that the false information did not come from Obama. The bolding is mine:

‘Born in Kenya’: Obama’s Literary Agent Misidentified His Birthplace in 1991

By Dylan Stableford

May 18, 2012

A possible source of the so-called “birther” issue–or at least a potential cause of the rumors that have dogged President Barack Obama–has been identified.

Obama’s former literary agency misidentified his birthplace as Kenya while trying to promote the then-Harvard Law grad as an author in 1991.

According to a promotional booklet produced by the agency, Acton & Dystel, to showcase its roster of writers, Obama was “born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.”

Miriam Goderich edited the text of the bio; she is now a partner at the Dystel & Goderich agency, which lists Obama as one of its current clients.

“This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me–an agency assistant at the time,” Goderich wrote in an emailed statement to Yahoo News. “There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.”

A copy of the booklet was published on Breitbart.com, under the headline: ” Obama’s Literary Agent in 1991 Booklet: ‘Born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.’ It was part of the “vetting” of the president the site’s late founder, Andrew Breitbart, had promised.

Here’s Obama’s full bio from the 1991 brochure:

“Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, he attended Columbia University and worked as a financial journalist and editor for Business International Corporation. He served as project coordinator in Harlem for the New York Public Interest Research Group, and was Executive Director of the Developing Communities Project in Chicago’s South Side. His commitment to social and racial issues will be evident in his first book, Journeys in Black and White.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Breitbart.com published a lengthy disclaimer with the brochure, saying it does not believe Obama was born outside of the United States:

Andrew Breitbart was never a “Birther,” and Breitbart News is a site that has never advocated the narrative of “Birtherism.” In fact, Andrew believed, as we do, that President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961.

Yet Andrew also believed that the complicit mainstream media had refused to examine President Obama’s ideological past, or the carefully crafted persona he and his advisers had constructed for him.

It is for that reason that we launched “The Vetting,” an ongoing series in which we explore the ideological background of President Obama (and other presidential candidates)–not to re-litigate 2008, but because ideas and actions have consequences.

It is also in that spirit that we discovered, and now present, the booklet described below–one that includes a marketing pitch for a forthcoming book by a then-young, otherwise unknown former president of the Harvard Law Review.

It is evidence–not of the President’s foreign origin, but that Barack Obama’s public persona has perhaps been presented differently at different times.

Despite that rationale, the publication will no doubt fuel “birthers” who refuse to believe Obama was born in the United States.

In a follow-up post, Breitbart.com noted that Obama was listed as being born in Kenya on the Dyster & Goderich website until April 2007, “just two months after then-Senator Obama declared his campaign for the presidency.”

Snopes put this picture of the pamphlet on its website:

Claim: A 1991 literary client list promotional booklet identified Barack Obama as having been born in Kenya.

True

In 2008, NPR published this article, which claimed that Obama was born in Kenya. Again, the bolding is mine:

by Ofeibea Quist-Arcton

October 9, 2008

Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, NPR’s Africa-based correspondent, tells why her beat has proved one of the most interesting this year.

She discusses the stories that have been painful and devastating for many nations on the continent such as the violent political fights that have led to power-sharing deals.

She also describes the stories that have been exciting, including the U.S. presidential race of Kenyan-born Sen. Barack Obama.

He was the worst president EVER, but according to Dinesh D’Souza, in his film “2016”, the announcement of his birth in a Hawaiian hospital, was published in two Hawaii newspapers, at the time.

I don’t think your comment is accurate. Of course, working from memory here, but...

I believe it is true that there were two announcements...but do not recall the part about the hospital. I believe the theory goes that Stanly Ann was out of the country at the time of Zero’s hatching and that the grandparents placed the announcements. Their intent would have been to try and make sure Obunga was considered a U.S. citizen...not, as the moronic left says shows how stupid the “birthers” are...that the birthers would have the world believe Obunga operatives were contriving at his birth to make him president. THAT comment is one of the stupidist to come out of the controversy.

But back to the original topic here...I LOVE throwing the birth story back in libtards faces. “Why,” I ask them, “shouldn’t we question his place of birth given that it was he who was first to say that he was born in Kenya?”

Most libtards look at me with incomprehension at that. And then I tell them about Obunga’s pamphlet...his pamphlet that he would have had to approve.

It’s about then they do their usual change the subject lest they engage actual thinking...”Yeah, but Bush drank a lot in college.”

Don't forget he was adopted by Sotero in Malaysia and they don't allow for dual citizenship and he traveled to Pakistan with his college boyfriend in 1981 and they did not allow Americans in at that time, so he had a Malaysian passport.

“No Christian would ever “mistakenly” say “my Muslim faith” (and need correcting by George Stephanopolous).”

And if George let Obama’s comment stand, we would have got either Hillary or McCain. Obama might have been the best of the bunch, which is scary.

McCain for all of his faults was better than Shillary or Odumbo.

How could you possibly “misidentify” his birthplace as Kenya? Why would you choose, of all places, Kenya for the birthplace?

Everything you mention means little as it was all after his birth and was conducted by parents.
This, like a name, is an "at birth" issue.

Even better, this (cough) genius (cough) thought the gift hospital birth certificate, the one with the footprint on it (and there were probably pictures back then as well), was the real deal.

A lawyer, mind you!

he was adopted in a country that (doesn't allow dual citizenship) and used his Malayan passport to travel to Pakistan in the 80’s with his boy friend, (a country that at the time did not allow Americans to enter.)

The laws of a foreign country cannot alienate a child’s US citizenship.

Whether Indonesia allows dual citizenship or doesn’t is irrelevant. IF “Obama” were born in Hawaii to a US citizen mother, the fact of being adopted in another country would not change his US citizen status under our laws.

Of course, Indonesia would not have to recognize him as a US citizen - that’s up to them. But he could apply for and be given a US passport at age 18 with no problem.

I agree that being a British subject at birth rules out him being a natural born citizen, it’s too bad the Supreme Court was in on the scam from the beginning.

It is absolutely 100% false that Pakistan did not allow US citizens to enter with a US passport in 1981 or at any other time between 1947 and 2018.

I worked in 1981 with US citizens who went back and forth to Pakistan all the time.

I comment on this every time it is posted. It is false and anyone who wants to can disprove it in five minutes with a computer.

Maybe he would have had to show a foreign passport to register as a foreign student (I doubt it, but it’s possible).

But that has nothing to do with his US citizenship, since the US allows dual nationality. My wife is eligible for an Irish passport, for example, through her grandmother.

If she went through the process and got it, it would not affect her US citizenship one bit.

And further, the US citizen parent of a child cannot purposefully renounce that child’s citizenship.

So, suppose Indonesia, or Lower Slobbovia, grants YOU their citizenship. The State Department’s position is “Fine, do whatever, but he’s OUR citizen until he says otherwise”, and that’s US law as well.

Barack Obama was born in the U.S.

We don't know that. Apparently he can't prove it. And he let the publishers "error" stand for years until he decided to run for president.

If BO was born in the US there would have been no need to seal ALL his records and present a fake BC.

Of course we should know the truth. The People were bullied into accepting a fake history. We want this to happen again?

You mean like a British citizen who is adopted in Indonesia where dual citizenship isn't allowed decides he wants to be American because his mother is.
