Universal Love For The AK (Pew-Pew)
guns.com ^ | August 19, 2019 | Ben Philippi

Posted on 08/19/2019 4:51:00 PM PDT by PROCON

“AK’s are kind of like a cheeseburger. However you want it, you can have it.” Those are Jared LaMarche’s thoughts on the Kalashnikov, or AK, rifle. LaMarche is a gunsmith at Windsor Arms in Windsor, Vermont. They bring a bunch of their AKs and other guns to the Green Mountain Boys Machine Gun Shoot in Eden, Vermont. The event takes place mid-July of every year.

LaMarche is a big fan of AKs. “A lot of people think that the AK is not a fun, or a great gun. I think it’s awesome,” he told Guns.com at last year’s shoot. He went on to explain that the AK platform was made for a conscript army. “Which is when you take a potato farmer, you take him out of the field and you give him a rifle, and now he’s a soldier.”

LaMarche demonstrated a few full auto AKs, ARs, a VEPR-12 full auto shotgun along with a few other interesting and rare guns at the Vermont shoot. He believes that once you shoot a good quality AK, with good quality ammo, you too will be a big believer in the AK platform.

What do you think? Do you prefer AK or AR?

Here are a few AKs that I’ve had the pleasure of photographing over the last few years.

AK74 uses 5.45x39mm, a nasty, zippy little dart.

RE Tinkering:

Yes, but a quick disassembly and simply dropping the integral 10 round mag out allows you to use 30 and larger mags in the SKS as well. You just put it back together without the integral mag, and viola...

And there is a mod that can be done to allow the SKS to use AK mags as well. But as you said, that requires tinkering. :^)

The AR bolt assembly is a bear to clean, IMHO.

These are most definitely NOT a bear to clean!

One swipe with a clean rag, and you're done.

But its still only a .22 … (that was the guy’s objection to the AR)

Worse, the 5.45x39 uses a 53gr projectile at 2900f/s compared to the 5.56x45 55gr projectile at 3200f/s.

So … if one is going to damn the AR for being “only a .22”, one should similarly damn the AK for being “only a .22”.

I love my Bulgarian AK 74. Accurate to 200 metres right out of the box. Sweet shooter too.

I have a couple of friends who have FAL’s. We used to go shoot regularly. I did most of the shooting as I always carried AR’s. .308 becomes pretty expensive, pretty quick.

Long, heavy beast the FAL. But if you want one, what are you waiting for?

Also the ladies like the AR. FAL just too big for most. BTW never seen an adjustable stock for one. Friends had fixed stocks and folding stocks. Kids love AR’s. Had a 10 y.o. who was shooting .22 with his family at the local range recently. Never shot an AR before. Blew through 60 rounds in a couple of minutes. You should have seen the smile! I think poor ‘ole dad had to stop by the gun store on the way home.

Ex girlfriend was about 5 ft 100 lbs. She was scary good with an AR. Better shot than most men I know. Took me about 10 minutes to get her confident with the controls, mag changes etc. I think she loved shooting that little weapon more than she loved me!

That’s one thing I’ll say good about the Sand Fleas: NOBODY tells them what they can and can’t own.

Re Analogy:

Is GOOD, no? AK is Svetlana... SKS is Ludmilla... BOTH will give your proletariat a revolutionary good time...

So long as it is back in the right spot again when you’re looking through it again, it’s all good.
