As I write this essay, I dont even know if Im going to post it. I only know my heart is aching and I cant make the pain go away. Its one thing to know that Americans are suffering due to their fear of Covid-19 and the propaganda that has been promoted throughout this country; its another to see a friend suffering from a fear that she is unwilling or unable to overcome.
I have known this woman for more than ten years. She is a Leftie. We learned a long time ago that there is no point in discussing politics. She is smart and sweet and is a down-to-earth person in so many ways. She developed a wonderful program to help children learn to read by bringing dogs into the learning process. And shes been a good friend.
Since shes a snowbird and currently living in Chicago, weve been practicing a physical movement series together through Whats App. Abiding by our original understanding, we havent discussed politics or Covid-19. But today, for me, something cracked open.
She is returning to Florida in a couple of weeks and asked me an odd question: was there a way to check on the internet at any given time whether emergency rooms and/or ICU beds were open at a hospital? I had to ask her to explain what she was asking, and then her query became clearer: if she had to be hospitalized with Covid-19, could she check which hospitals had space?
My brain felt as if it had been flooded by a dense fog. I then dipped into dangerous territory and asked her if she was getting news on the virus from any place other than MSNBC or CNN. She didnt answer. I told her that nationally, the percentage of deaths was going down. She responded that wasnt true. (I suspect she was thinking of the number of cases.) Then she said that North Dakota and Wisconsin, where she has family, were in bad shape, and I asked her what she meant. She said that five students had caught the virus and they were shutting down the school. I then buried myself when I asked if anyone had died. She flippantly answered that she didnt think so. At that moment, I knew I had misstepped.
I quickly suggested that we not go there in the conversation. She agreed and we moved on to our practice. I had a difficult time concentrating, and although we were cordial when we finished, I felt the small crack that had emerged between us.
So, Im stumbling under a swirl of emotions: disbelief, anger, sorrow. I know that part of my resistance to her state is my own frustration with dealing with the victimization of others. How can a person choose to be a victim? How can a person who is technologically adept not use her skills to get to the truth? How can a person who is naturally curious insist on wearing dark glasses rather than walking into the light?
I know. I know. People like her are everywhere. They choose suffering over information. They prefer living with the worst-case scenario rather than embracing possibility.
And there is nothing I can do to helphelp her or anyone else.
On a more positive note: Have any of you had any success with getting through to people you know who are of the type that Susan writes about?
Please share your secret for success.

My daughter is one of the four known conservatives in Charlottesville, VA
She texted that she was at the farmers market and saw some dork wearing what she described as a full blown military style gas mask. Outside.
Now it may have been someone mocking the Karen’s but more likely someone paralyzed by fear but really needing some fresh Basil.
Just had another thought, from what I understand, the mask culture is pretty non-existent in much of not most of Florida.
She may just turn around and head back to her safe space.
Anyone wearing a gas mask had to be doing it as a joke or a protest.
No. There Are many nitwits who are paralyzed by fear...and by their weakness.
All sensible discussion with her is not feasible...she isn't wanting your advice or even help....she wants your surrender to her beliefs!!!
Litany Against Fear
“I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Dune reference
Get a life...and tell your friend.
No offense, but do you get this worked up about everyone you know?
Or maybe she groomed you to worry the way you do.
It just sounds a bit like an unhealthy fixation.
So, Im stumbling under a swirl of emotions: disbelief, anger, sorrow.
Pick up a mirror and think about this.
Not that this information will get to the woman who wants to know, but in Clearwater, Florida there are billboards listing the current ER wait times at all the local hospitals. My daughter works as a nurse at the largest hospital there and tells us they never got close to capacity, even in the retirement capital of the world.
My older sister, my sister-in-law, and a good friend are all so terrified they do not leave their houses. They are all conservatives too. One does take walks, but only early in the morning before anyone else is up and even then she wears a mask.
You cannot fix her. She must do that herself, on her own, if ever.
Have any of you had any success with getting through to people you know who are of the type that Susan writes about?
None. I know many, being from New York and in ouch with family and long time friends. I have accepted that we are not going to agree politically, and have taken on the principal of my elders long gone, never talk politics in polite company
I do talk politics with like minded friends and family but I find that even they are not always down for the truth of whats going on.
The truth will out at one point. Soon? No one knows. But when it does theyll either continue to reject it, or know whom to call. Theyll call sooner if Im not in their face lecturing them
Amy Coney Barrett has it down.
Only time to wear a gas mask is when you are up and close to Joe Biden who has a tendency to talk out of his a**. I prefer to take my covid straight up than accompanied by an unpleasant scent
I have, as both.
But here's the irony.
A properly worn military gas mask actually does protect the wearer, not so much others near the wearer.
While the masks most people wear do a reasonably good job of protecting others from the wearer, but little to protect the wearer.
Wow. The woman appears to be mired somewhere in last Spring. Editing a post I just made on another thread, she appears to believe we're still flattening the curve so hospitals wont be overrun -- which never happened. She must have missed the part where we turned whole stadiums and warehouses into crisis wards ... That never saw a single patient.
Good advice is past the middle of this essay:
Fear the Walking D(r)ead!
Does the quackery at the top and the suppression of empirical evidence remind you of the global warming/climate change saga? It does me.
It all makes sense now.
Meanwhile, publications like the Washington Post have started to take a sick pleasure in highlighting the Covid neuroses which they themselves have inspired with their coverage.
Because the demographics of those terrorized by the virus and fearful of re-opening the country and returning to normal would appear at first glance to be the very same people who watch CNN, MSNBC and read the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times.
There are, however, signs that this Fauci-engendered nightmare may soon be over. New York Times science reporter, Donald G. McNeil Jr., reports that treatments are improving every day, and vaccine development is moving along much faster than was previously expected, both helped along by the Trump administrations Operation Warp Speed. Moreover, economists are predicting a rapid recovery.
The press will have to find something else to keep the populace in a state of full-blown hysteria when that happens. In the meantime it is probably a good idea for healthy people to do some common sense stuff, such as avoiding crowds, washing your hands more frequently, and taking dietary supplements (especially zinc and Vitamins C and D).
But don’t pay attention to Dr. Fauci. Listen to the president instead, specifically the phrase which drove so many leftists insane:
“Dont be afraid of Covid. Dont let it dominate your life.”
And for heaven’s sake, calm down!
