The impact of the use of a nuclear device in Ukraine will depend on the details. Like any large-scale industrial army, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have obvious pressure points that would be vulnerable to nuclear attack. These include logistical centers, command and communications nodes, and concentrations of front-line forces. During the Cold War the Soviet Union expected to use tactical nuclear weapons against NATO (and expected that NATO would use them in return) and it is therefore likely that the Russian armed forces have workable theories as to how they might best use tactical nukes to inflict damage on Ukraine’s fielded forces.

Tactical value no, there is however a strategic one.
It is the demonstration of the will to use such a weapon.
Those nations that have them brandish them but are
constrained by the very thought of their power.
Putin, Iran, are like the crazy guy on the subway,

In Ukraine? Nothing happens.
New York? End of the world.
Supply depots in Europe when arms to kill Russian soldiers are marshaled and shipped? The NATO-chi Minh trail? Ambiguous. Probably NATO surrender, but hard to know.
Kind of sad when you put it like this. The French helped us win the Revolutionary War, but they also had an axe to grind with the British. However, what has any of them done for us in the past 240 years?

But since they are conniving, manipulative, and controlling sociopaths - they are going to drag us into the pit with Europe.
How could a Europe-only response to a Russian nuclear attack on Ukraine ever be adequate?
If we wanted to avoid a direct military response, we would have to declare Russia a terrorist state, break off diplomatic relations, impose an absolute trade embargo (NOTHING sold to or bought from Russia) and send lots of weapons to Ukraine. This couldn’t be done without the US because the trade embargo would have to be universal (or nearly universal) - including China and India - and only the US is strong enough to force China and India to boycott Russia. Only the US has enough weapons to substantially strenghthen the Ukrainian military.
If wanted to respond conventionally, only the US has air assetts strong enough to crush the Russian military in Ukraine from the air.
The only option the Europeans have is using a tactical nuke. This would - in my opinion - be the riskiest option.

Russia gets split up like Germany after WWII. The UN Security council, minus Russia, will divvy up the country for 100 years. Russia as a country and culture will cease to exist.
