Just when you think that this story can’t get any worse, somehow it does. It is being reported that the wildfires that we just witnessed in Maui were the deadliest wildfires in the entire history of the United States, and according to Moody’s Analytics they caused somewhere between four and six billion dollars in economic damage. But if authorities had responded more competently, the outcome could have been much different. In fact, the fire that ultimately completely destroyed Lahaina could have been controlled if fire crews had not “left the scene even though the fire was still burning”…
Maui locals have questioned why the blaze which developed into deadly wildfires that swept across the island was left unattended by firefighters hours before it spread.
A fire broke out on the outskirts of Lahaina at around 6.30am on Tuesday, August 8 and was declared ‘100 percent contained’ several hours later. Fire crews then left the scene even though the fire was still burning within the containment area.
But within a few hours, there was a ‘flareup’ which quickly spiraled out of control and fire crews who responded again were unable to extinguish it.
Once the fire came roaring back to life, hundreds of lives could have been saved if authorities had not put up a barricade that blocked the only paved road out of Lahaina…

Absolutely horrible situation.
But don’t put me in the camp that says that this was a planned attack to wipe out the people. Unforeseen things happen. Comfort the survivors. And even when human actions are complicit, don’t be too quick to attribute something to malice if stupidity is an available option.
My opinion is this whole thing was planned...
From what I recall it even goes further than that. The guy is a native Hawaiian and considers the water to be some kind of sacred resource. I don’t know if he literally believes that but somehow honoring that traditional belief feeds into his view that water policy has a social justice aspect.
But don't rule out malice.
The 1871 Peshtigo fire in Wisconsin, which may have killed as many as 2,400 people, was worse.
Why did the fire crews leave the scene? I don't know much about firefighting, but it would seem to me that they would not leave until the fire was completely out.
It is not difficult to understand how individuals who base their entire lives and outlooks on fantasies make bad decisions when an understanding of reality is necessary.

I heard it was due to downed power lines blocking the road ahead. Some drove past the barrier and survived.
Dont know the truth but sure seems like the gov response to this fire was grossly incompetent and many people died as a result.
Sadly no one will hold them accountable.
