.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Glad You're There

A friend is always waiting
Somewhere beyond this screen
We've shared our lives and feelings
Not to mention the odd dream

The world is getting smaller
But my heart is big enough
To accept the caring friendship
You're there when things get rough

If life is like an ocean
We sail from sea to sea
I'm less alone on this long trip
Knowing you're there with me

Accept this hug I give you
It comes right from my heart
True friends are gems that shine so bright
Even though we're worlds apart

So I'll be looking for you
Don't you dare go away and hide
I need the smiles and laughter
Thanks for being at my side

A friend is not a fellow

who is taken in by sham

A friend is one who know our Faults

And doesn't give a damn.

I have had that hanging on my living room wall for nearly a half century. I wish I knew who wrote it.

~ Fall Friendship Poem ~

They sang with sweetest voices
Of Autumn's harvest time,
Of burnished trees and falling leaves
And grapes upon the vine...
They sang of nuts and berries,
Of Nature's bounteous store
Of apple trees and fields of wheat
And hazelnuts galore!

Count your garden by the flowers,
Never by the leaves that fall,
Count your days by the golden hours;
Don't remember clouds at all.
Count your nights by stars,
not shadows.
Count your years with smiles,
not tears.
Count your blessings, not your troubles.
Count your age by friends,
not years!

Washita River

When the Oklahoma sun glares hot overhead
The Washita River, through its gulch of red,
Trickles slowly along on its tortuous way
Through Clinton, Anadarko and Chickasha,
From the Cheyenne Hills and the Texas plains,
Where the hot winds blow and it seldom rains
Throught the C. And A. county and the Kiowa
Clean down to Red River and the Chickasaw
Through windswept prairies and lonely sandhills,
To the tree-bordered valleys where coolness distills.

When the spring rains come and the winter snows thaw,
It's a different story - the Washita.
Then the swollen river roars down with a flood
Turning fertile farm lands into swirling mud,
And riding the waves of its mighty crest,
Like cattle stampeding or stallions abreast,
Come branches and trunks of uprooted trees
Where an hour before one crossed it with ease.
It goes rip-roaring on its ravaging way,
And man counts his losses with gloom and dismay.

Visiting a rural farm Rush Limbaugh and his chauffeur were out driving in the country and accidentally hit and killed a pig that had wandered out on a country road. Limbaugh told the chauffeur to drive up to the farm and apologize to the farmer.

They drove up to the farm, the chauffeur got out and knocked on the front door and was let in. He was in there for what seemed like hours. When the chauffeur came out, Limbaugh was confused about why his driver had been in there so long.

"Well, first the farmer shook my hand, then he offered me a beer, then his wife brought me some cookies, and his daughter showered me with kisses." explained the driver.

"What did you tell the farmer?" Limbaugh asked.

The chauffeur replied, "I told him I was Rush Limbaugh's driver and I'd just killed the pig."

Love that poem. You've been finding lots of good ones about the prairie lately. This prairie girl at heart loves them all. I'm trying to keep them for my scrapbooking.

I have been meaning to ask you because I haven't had time to keep up with FR this week....have the fires reached your area? I've been watching the news and praying. I hope everyone I know from that area is ok.

We are fine. The fires are in Southern California and we are located in Central California. The destruction there is unbelievable. Please pray for all living in Southern California.

Congrats on being spotlighted today on the Finest Thread. : )
