The Piedmont Park dog run used to be haven for Brigid Scarbrough; a place to escape the bustle of the city while her two dogs frolicked off the leash.
But now the area conjures nothing but dread because of what happened to her Boston terrier on a recent morning. Oreo fell into an open manhole at the back of the enclosure and was swept away by flowing sewage.
Firefighters couldn't save the animal, and sewer officials couldn't find the dog in time to recover its body. "They said because he was solid he would have been taken away with the solid waste and incinerated," Scarbrough said.
Sewers already occupy a low place in urban lore, a home of rats and, some imagine, even alligators. Now Atlanta's sewers can claim another distinction: pet killer.
Capt. Byron Kennedy of the Atlanta Fire Department confirmed that firefighters descended into the manhole on April 18 in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the small, black and white dog.
Before that, Scarbrough had climbed down into the manhole herself, trying to rescue her dog. When she noticed Oreo was missing, she walked to where he'd been playing and spotted the hole. She climbed about eight feet to the bottom and stood in sewage that rose nearly to her knees while she called her dog.
The dirty water flowed into a tunnel a few inches taller, and she could hear Oreo barking in the distance but couldn't reach him.

It just blows my mind the woman actually went into the sewer to look for the freakin dog**!
If that was my gf/wife i would have really chewed her ass out for trying to save the dog and endanger her life. AAARGHHH! I wonder about SOME of you pet owners.
It just pisses me off people endanger their lifes for a dog. I know people love their pets, but come on now.
((MEGA FLAME SUIT ACTUATED))
** Disclaimer: I love pets too.
HEY!
Oreo fell into an open manhole
Awwwww, I'm glad she's alright. You just can't put a price on the joy they bring you!
Congratulations. Your dog is blessed to have an owner like yourself.
I'm not even what you'd call a "dog" person and I feel the same way.
Poor lil fella.
Dogs in their present form are designed by man. We are responsible for them.

That wasn't the most tactful thing they could have said.
It pisses me off more when people decide I need to have the same priorities they have.
Me too. :(
Exactly right...people will put themselves in danger for their pets, and they will spend large amts of money to provide medical care for their pets...and I say, kudos to them for caring so much, about their pets...
Maybe its not something that another pet owner might do, but then again, its no one elses business...
Hubby and I are getting ready to spend $2100 for our German Sheppard to have his hip fixed. I've gotten a lot of ridicule from my co-workers, but I hope it'll be worth it. If he can ambulate without pain, it will be.
Bostons are great little dogs.
I really wish I hadn't clicked on this story, it's so sad and horrific.
Dude, don't wonder. Just leave us the f*** alone. If we want to spend thousands of dollars or risk our lives for our pets, let us. It is NOT your problem.
still wondering about the open manhole cover in a city controled dog run.
The ignorant are destined to wonder. Having a GSD that has quite literally saved my life twice (that I'm aware of), and having been just about everything and the only thing to me through a bitter divorce, bankruptcy and the depths of alcoholism, I've been blessed to learn a lot about myself, namely that I'm not the type of ingrate that could ever live down or forget being the reciptient of unconditional love, albeit, from just, 'a freakin dog.'
