People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking a state prison superintendent to no longer allow "fried chicken" killer Tremayne Durham to eat meat, saying he "should be prevented from contributing to any more suffering and death - including the kind associated with eating meat and dairy products."
PETA sent a letter this morning to Nancy Howton, the superintendent of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, where Durham will be processed over the next several weeks before being assigned to another prison.
Durham, who killed Gresham man Adam Calbreath over his frustration with a deal to buy an ice-cream truck gone sour, has become known through news stories around the globe because he received KFC fried chicken, Popeyes chicken, lasagna, calazones and ice cream as part of his plea deal for aggravated murder. He was sentenced in Multnomah County earlier this week to life in prison with the possibility of release after 30 years.
In the letter from PETA, headquartered in Norfolk, Va., executive vice president Tracy Reiman, writes that
"...we ask that you deny Durham the opportunity to participate in further violence by putting him on a vegetarian diet." The letter also takes issue with KFC and the wide-scale raising of poultry. "Millions of senseless killings such as the one committed by Durham are carried out every day for nothing more than a fleeting taste for flesh," the letter reads. "In slaughterhouses, chickens and turkeys routinely have their throats cut..."
Spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said PETA isn't just singling out Durham because of his publicized favor for chicken. "We actually do send out similar letters for other convicted killers," Rajt said. As far as she knows, though, no prison system has ever taken PETA up on its suggestion to cut meat out of killers' diets.
PETA Ping!
WHAT!! No watermelon? =oD
“...he should be prevented from contributing to any more suffering and death - including the kind associated with eating meat and dairy products...’
How does consuming DAIRY products contribute to suffering and death?
I suppose it’s those poor suffering dairy cows they’re referring to. If an animal is connected to anything, PETA is against it.
Besides, think of the taxpayers. Beets are cheaper than beef. Chard is cheaper than chicken. :)

I see your point and I might agree if it wasn’t PETA pushing it. :-)
They would rather he die, I guess, than make this deal. Half a chicken is worth more than a man to them.
I’ve never heard of an ice cream truck going sour...I suppose if the refrigeration went out?
It went 30 years worth of sour for him.
Think of the brutality of tearing the leaves off of a head of lettuce...
I think enforced vegetarianism is prohibited under the 8th A "cruel and unusual punishment"
That’s beautiful, wonder if Reiman would like that. :-)
I have a 20 Ga. but I've never hunted them. I have eaten squirrel many times and could really go for some squirrel dumplins right now.
HA! If the PETA Nazis witnessed the death throws of that squirrel or heard about eating road kill they’d have to see a shrink for counseling.
I’ve never eaten a mackeral patty but I believe road kill would be an improvement and I’d wager after the rabbit was cooked you couldn’t tell it was a road kill.
Right, PETA’s only agenda is to convert everybody to vegetarianism. Sounds like another well known group trying to convert the world to their idealogy.
