HOUSTON -- As Barack Obama considers the pantheon of larger-than-life presidents who came before him, David Adickes pauses to consider Barack Obama.
The Houston sculptor carefully examines the president-elects profile: his slightly furrowed brow, the firm mouth pursed somewhere between smile and frown, the expressive eyes. Adickes squints. Something is not quite right.
Looking at him, I see that his ears have to go back about a quarter of an inch, Adickes says, then reaches to gently tweak the features on a life-size model of the president-elects head.
The bust is the first step in plans for a replica of Obamas head to join dozens of other presidential busts the size of two-story buildings sitting behind a chain-link fence in the parking lot and camped in rows inside the vast studio space in an industrial part of Houston.
They are the faces of American history past and present. On the table, the unfolding countenance of the 44th president. In the lot outside, looming 18 to 20-feet tall, the supersized sculptures of Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Harry Truman, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln.
The enormous statues, created by Adickes using a painstaking technique of layered concrete and steel, will line a winding waterway at the planned Presidential Park and Gardens at Waterlights, an 18-acre mixed-use development in Pearland, a suburb just south of Houston.
Six statuesGeorge Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and George Herbert Walker Bushare already in place at the site.
Soon, a Barack Obama statuesculpted using the model resting on Adickes studio tablewill join them.
Adickes, who began fashioning the Obama piece last week, is pushing to finish the statue by Presidents Day, Feb. 16.

I actually live near the sculptors studio and he has placed 3 busts of the founding fathers a block from my house near Interstate 10 and Taylor Street. I still can’t believe our country elected this empty suit.
My Houston home was in the area north of Taylor St in Woodland Heights, and on a trip back home my neighbors showed me the sights in that area - including his studio. I’m still amazed how that neighborhood has changed - can’t even believe that there’s now a Target there!
Beat us to it.
This happened to a statue to Ernesto "Che" Guevara in Venezula, less than 2 weeks after it was errected!
I Bet Chubby Hugo messed his britches when he heard about it.
Monuments to Lilliput are not remembered.
I suppose we’ll have to worhsip three times a day? I wonder when marks will be required to buy or sell. Or do we just have to get a tattoo?
These dimwits are always full of symbolism. This is one of the ways they claim the minds of the uninformed. The uniformed don’t need to think for themselves.
But but but I am sure the 44th. pres was going to be Hitlery.
It’ll probably be 50 feet tall like the one of Kim il Sung in North Korea and any one caught not bowing to it will get a nice little visit to Chairman ObaMAO’s Gulag.
The little secret here is that he has made a bust of EVERY president. They ALL reside together (he’s actually done this for 3 different installations).
Only when it is the Obamessiah does it make the news.
I loathe the Pravda Media we have in the USSA.
Would it be a hate crime to beat this statue with shoes as the Iraqis beat statues of Saddam Hussein O’Soetoro?
Houston PING
